Guys please get behind LFTR technology. We HAVE the technology to go carbon neutral within 10 years. We built an LFTR called the MSRE experiment at Oak Ridge in the 60s. We learned a lot, but because LFTRs are not good for making nuclear weapons, we didn't pursue it. They fail safe and operate at atmospheric pressure (no boom if punctured) and consume more than 90% of their fuel as opposed to light water thermal reactors (virtually all nuclear reactors currently being operated) which only consume 5%.

Before I got a Tesla, I've never personally cared for a product, politician or political party in my life - Tesla and SpaceX are the only companies I've ever cared about. But I absolutely hate how much attention and unsolicited criticism I get just from driving the car. I don't publicly advertise that I drive a Tesla (except behind a pseudonym like here, I guess) because I hate the way it instantly triggers people to become defensive about their choices or offensive at mine. If I was broadly considered hilarious, perhaps I'd approach it differently, but most people don't get my humor, so there's that.

Its more beneficial to the economy and the people, that combination will lead to RTR becoming a thing IMO. Doesn't matter if you're republican, democrat, or whatever else, everyone has a need to want to repair their items. RTR impacts farmers and other large sectors of the economy too. Having companies sell directly to repair centers, and allowing those parts to fall into the hands of regular people. Having the ability to repair something and resell it, or, repair for a customer, etc. It supports tons of small businesses and creates tons of jobs and pumps millions of dollars into local economies for REAL TAXATION that otherwise would be trash. Not to mention, the long-term of not having RTR, it would kill tons of jobs that exist currently, anything that has to do with 'used' anything could be under fire in the future. People are waking up.

Such a fantastic round table you had in the Sprinter. My first time I ever noticed the psychotic infatuation with brand was with a Tesla owner. Long story short, I went to buy two riding lawnmowers from a guy. In his garage was a 60's caddy and a brand new Tesla. I talked to him about the beautiful caddy. The guy started trying to steer the conservation to the Tesla. I replied "yeah it's a neat car" and continued to look at the Caddy. He started to act like I just told him it sucks and he lost it. He stated during his rant "it was the most perfect important car ever built " in his rant. He tried to argue with me about what I thought was a perfect car (triple black 71 Imperial). He kept trying to argue about the cost of gas, technology, and how it's going to save the environment. I kept telling him well that's your view, I respect it, and different folks different strokes but he continued. It got to the point his wife heard him getting heated and she told him to calm down and talked to him. He sheepishly came back and apologized to me and sold me the mowers for cheap. I was so surprised at how he acted at the time. I had never seen that type of behavior over a car. Gm, Mopar, import, Ford we have our dislikes but dang they never get that obsessed and passionate over arguing who's stuff is better.

I came across the channel a couple of years ago when I first seriously looked at getting a Tesla and was searching "what breaks?", "Are Tesla's unreliable". Almost everything in the channel is irrelevant to me as mine is leased and I'll only have it for 3 years maximum, so no problem. I stayed for the humour and especially the product placements - they're hilarious. The project I can really get behind Uncle Rich on is right to repair. I do care about the environment and one of the biggest issues we need to fix is our habit of chucking stuff away. I also like taking stuff apart to try and fix it. The best thing about Tesla/Elon? I think they've single handedly forced the auto industry to move away from fossil fuels. And the smartest bit of the whole business model? Building out the charging infrastructure ahead of the cars. There are serious competitors for the cars now, but I'm about to place an order for another Tesla despite all the things wrong with the car, because the most important feature is that I need reliable transport and they're currently the only manufacturer offering that. I hope in three years when I order again I'll at least have a difficult choice to make. Keep up the good work - by which I mean advocating right to repair and maintaining your level of sarcasm.

@@AquarianSoulTimeTraveler You need to think wider than Tesla. Even if Tesla perfect fully autonomous cars, they won't be on the roads until legislation changes. They may well be first, but others will follow and therefore standards will be required and agreed. You'd need some kind of tamper proofing and system check on the self driving platform, but there's no reason to prevent a third party repairing almost all of the car. Assuming the autonomous driving is any good it'll be less dangerous than allowing a human to drive a poorly repaired car as 1) it can do a full system check everyone out starts and 2) it should be better able to control the car if something is wrong. If it's capable of detecting a fault in an original component, it should be capable of detecting a fault in a part fitted by a third party, otherwise it's not fit for purpose. Examples: a third party fitting a second hand motor to an old Tesla from an insurance write off or a car where the battery has failed so it's not worth repairing the car, but the motors still work. No interest for Tesla in doing that kind of repair, no interest from the owner in spending main dealership money on new parts and labour, no risk to autonomous driving from a properly fitted secondhand motor. The inbuilt diagnostics will monitor it and if it's not performing within spec, autonomous driving will be disabled. The same apples to parts of the self driving kit: you have a minor accident where your side repeater camera is damaged. You get a secondhand one from another car (or a new one from Tesla) and fit it yourself - they just clip in. The autonomous system registers the device, checks its functionality and either it's ok and the system works or it doesn't meet standards and autonomous driving is disabled. No reason not to apply the same to the main self driving computer. It'd be just like getting an ECU for a modern ICE car. Anyone can fit a secondhand or a new one to their car, saving money on parts and labour, but you have to take it to the main dealers to have it coded to your car.
@AquarianSoulTimeTraveler3 жыл бұрын
@@johnmckay1423 make no mistake there will be no other competition to Tesla period! Tesla has no intention of sharing its full self-driving software that is the one part of their car that they keep confidential and not open source. Again Tesla doesn't want you touching the vehicle because it will be insured by Tesla 100 percent when full self driving feature is released! At that point if you need money to repair your Tesla you have plenty of opportunities to put your vehicle on the Tesla taxi fleet and make you hundreds of thousands of dollars... Eventually you're right to drive a multi-ton death machine will be stripped from you... If you think there's going to be competition to Tesla you're going to be deeply disappointed in the future when you're stuck renting Tesla full self driving technology instead of owning it... For $100 you can lock in your full self driving price on a single motor cybertruck... You won't get that cyber truck until 2029 or later at that point the Tesla taxi fleet will be up and operational and you will be able to take your locked in $10,000 full self driving price and get guaranteed financing from any bank because the full self driving price will be $150 Grand or more at that point and the banks will realize the money that can be made off of the Tesla taxi fleet turning what is usually a net negative investment into a net positive investment of full self driving ownership. Can't say I didn't tell you. If you do not listen to this advice I'm giving you right now you're going to regret it in the future. Bend over and submit.

@UCzla5HaT8QV1x6Kbc227lKg you are an idiot, if you believe that insurance or insurability has anything to do with the right to repair. FSD or not cars in the US and most if not all the world have to have insurance to be on the road, all cars should be able to be repaired by someone other than the manufacturer, whether that is the vehicle owner, or a certified shop shouldn't matter. Right to repair is about getting tech manuals, and repair parts into the hands of technicians who can do the repairs when going to the OEM isn't possible or affordable after the warranty is up.
@AquarianSoulTimeTraveler3 жыл бұрын
@@AlaskaHandyman1973 yes but again those people are paying for that insurance you won't be paying for any insurance in a Tesla when it's full self driving... You get to work on the vehicle because it's insured if you mess it up or mess something up you pay for that insurance so your faults are covered... Maybe they will make an insurance program where you can pay a little bit extra insurance cost to be able to do that type of out of manufacturer repair instead of paying nothing at all... Maybe that would be a valid option in the future...
@RonniePTexan3 жыл бұрын
@@AquarianSoulTimeTraveler You do realize that Tesla's insurance is only one of many insurance companies, right? Another thing, insurance doesn't pay to fix your car when it breaks. Insurance only covers for accidents. Every car on the road, of every brand, will break one day. That is an undeniable fact. The question is- who can repair it after it breaks down? Every brand sells parts and helps in every way to get their car fixed- except Tesla. What you will end up with is people avoiding or putting off repairs and continue to drive cars that are then less reliable, dependable and often less safe. Would you rather have cars on the road that are fixed and maintained better or would you rather have a bunch of Tesla's that aren't fixed and maintained properly?

@35:00 An electric car charged by fossil fuel generated electricity still produces significantly less CO2 per mile than an internal combustion engine. Main reason is that even a power station running on the worst form of fossil fuel, coal, generates less CO2 per unit of energy produced than an internal combustion engine in a car. The reasons for the higher efficiency are two. First is that power stations are almost always running at their optimum operating point (which is normally close to full power output) and second is that, being unconstrained by size and weight limitations, they can afford build much larger machines for a given power output that can then extract more energy from the heat produced by the fuel. There have been various studies on the subject of EVs powered by fossil originating electricity vs internal combustion engined cars. One of the outcomes is that even in the worst case scenario of an electric car run solely on electricity generated by conventional coal powered plants the EV breaks even on carbon emission in about eight years. For the more average power station, somewhere between the worst coal and the best LNG powered CCGTs you get a breakeven time of about 3 to 5 years. For the best case scenario, when using zero carbon energy that break even occurs in under a year, the balance being the extra CO2 emissions involved in building the EV over the ICE car.

I just had the aha moment about the FB video on October 11 that you guys shared on the topic of letting people know about other options to repair their Tesla or screen repairs. In a way it seems that the options to repair something or to be able to acquire original manufacture parts to fix things through alternative means besides going to a Tesla dealership or Apple store is all comes down to taking the freedom away from the customer and the alternative repairman the choices to find cheaper ways to fix expensive things and mandating/punishing both to push for the “proper” expensive fixes, which it seems has no compassion for the customers pocket book! Just as it seems in many other aspects of life, choices are starting to be limited, while options that are not necessary are being seeker out by customers are being mandated on the customer. Great content, keep it up! Enjoying the conversations you guys have!

Replacing just one battery module *can* work. But it is analogous to replacing a timing belt at 150,000 miles and leaving the old timing belt driven water pump in there. Sometimes you get away with it, sometimes you don't. It is still hard to find 10 year old batteries that are still good and strong.

Totally agree and don't see Rich mentioning this. I think they are just praying the pack stays good. I wonder though over time..what percentage will fail after this type of fix and how long (miles). Content creators seem to think they *deserve* trust from complete strangers. Why should they? If the audience blindly trusted them, that'd be a bad sign, not a good one. That's susceptibility to the infamous "fake news". Scientific principles like peer review and source criticism standards are established for very good reasons. Rich is the man and I've been following him Not Long Enough. His humor rocks, so does his channel. I'm recently early retired (disabled) at only 52 due to major vision problems in addition to MS. I didn't say that for pity, just trying to paint a picture here. Last time I worked a real full time job was Dec 2017. From that time to about 15 years prior I was an electric forklift mechanic. I worked for all the major manufacturers of forklifts here in Detroit area so it's not like I was stuck working on one model or technology all that time. I've seen alot of cool stuff and a few turds (early toyota ac motor trucks for example...there was no "controller" just a big open board of all these weird japanese transistors and tons of cable etc, you get the picture". The performance of these machines have been borderline shocking in the impressive department for quite some time now. Alot of new trucks came off the semi to the dealer and not prepped meant they were turned on high. They were equivalent to a 707hp v8 in a challenger than any chump can buy and ends up in body shop within 15 days of purchase. We had to turn them wayyy down to be safe. Electric trucks make sense in material logistics because, um, enclosed warehouses. Nobody wants carbon monoxide in their lunch diet for 30 years. My whole point is this...Rich is trying to point out the fact that infrastructure here in US will NEVER support an all electric fleet anytime soon. Just can't happen. We all love the punch of electric vehicles and they are here to stay. However I firmly believe for at least the next hundred years it's gonna be kinda sorta pretty much like diesel vs gasoline in the car and truck markets. Electric will be the diesel bitch sister and gasoline will remain the norm. Like ultra low sulfur diesel fuel, electric vehicles will fit into that highly complicated (by the EPA) vehicle controls that cost more and need a crutch (such as DEF) to keep that market alive...but won't be for the every day commuter on his or her average 20 min drive to work each day. I'm 52 now but someday when I grow up and can afford it I want a 9sec Plaid.
