Maybe now that the orthodox have to serve in the army they will be less militant. Evenhandedness wins support; one-sidedness does not. Stay off Christianity; the Church was tasked with keeping the Dark Occult out of the mainstream on the ascent from The Dark Age to the Age of Reason. Harris is clueless about this so until he educates himself, he shouldn’t comment on it. The Cartoonists were stupid; is it the business of the free press to mock anyone’s religion or belief? @plaiche3 ай бұрын
I made it 37 min in and bailed but stopped here before leaving and will at min find the portion you reference. Sam is brilliant enough to sound so even when he is pounding sand with his own biases, rationalizations and invocation of sweeping generalizations that, to be correct, would require a level of intimate knowledge of the hearts of billions of people to be founded on anything but what is essentially an elitist and one liberal worldview that is stuck in the best moments and the apex of utility of the new atheist moment. Even then, he was willing to ignore the depth of history and the layers of obvious resource and geopolitical primacy that underlie the whole Jihad vs McWorld thesis (the foundation of the post soviet reboot of empire/western centric status quo). Jihad was an obscure, irrelevant relic until our heavy handed post OPEC machinations in the oil drenched middle east escalated. We in fact helped create the tiny jihadist mindset through the we'll studied effects correlating US military bases with the same and through our covert (at the time) mobilization of a jihadi ethos in the proxy war of Afghanistan. Here he opens with references to a broken discourse and our inability to agree upon basic facts but can't even pause for a breathe after lamenting censorship to begin asserting that there is a binary (simplistic garbage) and that his facts are the correct ones and the knuckled riggers of the flyover states and the Muslim world are ignorant rubes to q one. Its Straussian elitism at its finest while enticing we listeners to feel smarter as he artfully reasserts the same lamentably binary frameworks that he cut his teeth on. Covid? Not worth exploring how lost he has been since day one. Vocally, assertively lost. Public health and the need for trust (despite he and Rich agreeing it has been tarnished for at least some amount of legitimate absurdities) which if you listen closely, is an appeal to shut down your faculties and trust experts. This is either an elitist and dim view of human capacity to reason or a fear based assumption that the masses are idiots. Either way, its illogical drivel that needs to ignore the failures and transparent corruption of leadership in society by a disproportionately influential segment of the same that numbers in the thousands for all practical purposes. I won't recount his madcap utterances the past few years, and I do sense that he is crawling towards something less overconfident and strident, but he simply can't seem to see the forest yet from his elitist perch in the trees. Its sad because i still find myself very interested in the segment you mention. I've listened to a fair amount of Sam's meditative material and his depictions of his dabblings with psilocybin. There and hear depth and equanimity. When he speaks about world events it all goes out the window and he's oblivious. Calling for earnest dialog e while subtly asserting that Hamas are the only unhinged bad actors in that context is willfully ignorant and absurd when you account for the role of Israel and her allies in literally dropping up Hamas openly in the formative years to serve their own aims. When Sam stops suggesting that the devout of one religion have overcome a fear of death in mqsse, suggesting they are essentially no longer human and he starts weaving in the possibility that much of the geopolitical landscape contains the frankenstein creations large and small of the west after millions dead through murky conflicts their of our choosing, i will gladly reengage and listen for the wisdom i hear in his personal/quasi spiritual content. But in these broader contexts, i find him to be a profoundly self deluded ideologue doggedly defending an elitist worldview and failing to adjust it in real time to events giving it the extremely ironic basis of what looks very mom like Faith that present secular, neoliberal elites who' power and machiavellian use of the same continue to outpace any wisdom or efficacy they may still represent broadly. Godspeed Sam.

Keep it radically and thoroughly simple. Self-awareness reveals thoughts arise without a thinker. Continuing self-awareness realises itself as the consciousness that contains all things, simply because there is no thinker, so there is no world external, nothing outside you. The emergent properties of this realisation are love, bliss, and wisdom. All that is left to do is to maintain self-awareness, acting in complete freedom.

coming from a lousy youtube interview with elon musk(the supposed genius), I had to adjust to the structured/compressed/highly sensitive way of speaking/thinking Sam Harris naturally has..what a relief...

Rich, you are so knowledgeable about the topics and asked such good questions that you provide the space for Sam to go into details on consciousness and non-duality (the ultimate reason behind meditation). Thank you so much!

There is an answer/solution to the question of what is consciousness. Two epistemological 'puzzle pieces' in the solution are 1) thought is physically made of forces flowing through neural structures that include loops, comparitors, and differencing, and 2) existence is always and exactly now (the duration of every Now is zero). This is why when being in states of flow, the sense of time disappears. After experiencing this, and with practice, one can step into this state by simply choosing to BE. The causal continuum that is the universe is just running. Enjoy the ride.

There’s a glaring contradiction between Sam Harris’s pro-Israel rhetoric and his promotion of the “Waking UP” app. It’s disconcerting!

As someone who does not consume politically driven media and does not have take sides, I’m confused why Rich’s guest brings every point he makes back to a political agenda. He’s very well spoken and competent, and his delivery is highly refined, but his message lacks authenticity and appears to be driven by an external motivation. The behavior he exudes is inconsistent with natural conversation. He is so sure to close every thought with a politically driven objective statement, and clearly favors one side. I’ve listened to the entire podcast because you can learn just as much if not more from people you don’t agree with, but subjectively, this guy uses every point he makes to take a political stance. I do not like the personal and/ or external factors that detracted from the podcast. Whether you’re a fan of his guest, or dislike him, all should give honest thought to why every point gets brought back to making a political argument. I don’t find this man very trust worthy.

@@keatts23 I would advise you to read his books. I’m quite sure he’s full of compassion for the civilian population of Gaza but he sees a bigger picture. Hamas knew exactly what would happen to them after their attack. It’s tragic beyond belief. 😰

"More true" is one of the most accurate (and succinct) encapsulations of _the experience_ I've ever heard. It's hard to overstate just how forcefully this feeling will pervade your life once you've visited pure selflessness in the now; in fact, you *will* be changed by it, or to use the cliche, awakened. Not something you forget. It's been decades now, and I still retain some aspect of this conceptual 'truth.' Sounds like hippie nonsense if you haven't been there, but be aware that there really are states of human experience in which every moment becomes a preciously fleeting thing of value. And in this mental space, you can watch your petty personal insecurities dissolve into an infinitely small, distant concern with perfect clarity. It's a dose of pure humility, and an ironically sobering view of one's own inextricable place in this, here, shared, unified, now.

My issue with what Sam Harris says is that when he says: "We spend most of our time talking to ourselves," he really means "images are flying through our heads," not complete sentences or opinions. The images we project "within" aren't necessarily thoughts, or complete intersubjectively communicable stuff. They are sometimes coincidental associations, unless you believe there's some structure to the unconscious.

I experimented quite a bit w drugs back in my 20s, and NOTHING came even close to how great MDMA was. It was just the most amazing experience, every time I took it. I was always with friends, and everyone was just so free to express themselves without any thought of how it would be perceived. People telling each other how much they loved each other and how much they meant to each other. It just makes you feel so good physically and mentally. The predominant feeling that I and others I knew that took it was LOVE. They used to use MDMA in couple's therapy, because of how open and expressive people are under its influence, so couples can hash out years of problems quickly. People finally tell each other how they really feel about each other, without any fear of rejection or awkwardness.. Raves were full of people on MDMA back in the 90s, and everyone was so cool and friendly, and open with each other. Even strangers would say things that you normally don't hear from even your closest loved ones lol. Made many friends on ecstasy, and they are some of my fondest memories of my 20s.

17 minutes in and so disappointed... Oh, Sam, a bit myopic, no? And Rich, no push back or challenging his statements? Promised myself to listen to the whole thing later. Hoping for better.

This sort of interview can be difficult and it’s not Richs bag. Everyone rips on Lex for his interviews and the way he doesn’t push, but it’s a delicate game to play, and you have to learn the right way, which I’m sorry to say, might not align with what you think.
