It's a shame Mr Briscoe didn't get to train full time for his fights. I couldn't imagine how difficult it must have been busting your ass at work, helping raise your four kids then go off to run ten miles and fight in a gym. He's a legend alright.

Rodrigo Valdez is a boxer who is criminally underrated . In addition to whole slew of impressive wins,, Rodrigo took three out of three against Bad Bennie including one punch cold cocking. Also hung tough in two fights against Monzon. Only man to drop Carlos I believe. .Rodrigo deserves to be in Hall of Fame

This was a great documentary. I used to train at a gym in Palmdale, California and there was a guy by the name of Don Denkins and he used to talk about Briscoe. The stories about Briscoe's sparring sessions in Philly were so damn lively and entertaining. Briscoe was a beast and his narrative was so damn compelling. Rich, you did one hell of a job!

Absolutely brilliant. Loved that. So well done with accompanying music. A tribute to a true warrior. Bennie had his limitations, but a massive heart. Baddest Philadelphia fighter ever. Carlos Monzon treated almost all his opponents with disdain, all except for Briscoe. Briscoe had Monzon seriously hurt in the 9th round of their second fight, and that’s something considering Monzon was the greatest Undisputed Middleweight Champion of all time. Even the Marvelous One fought an old, worn out Bennie with the greatest of caution.

He was the only one to ever really hurt Monzon . He was as tough as Hagler and hit possibly even harder - but he lacked some finesse and counterpunching skills . Definitely a pity that he never won the title.
@brianseneca35462 жыл бұрын
I never saw he title fight with Monzon! Man he looked OUT when Benny hit him with that right. You can see him looking over Benny's shoulder at the clock. One or two more clean shots and he may have finally won that elusive title. Great fighter RIP
@Motorfirez2 жыл бұрын
@@brianseneca3546 yeah - Monzon years later explained that ge got hit on the ear and totally lost balance - he was out on his feet. However it must be told tha Monzon totally outclassed Briscoe - one of the judges gave him all 15 rounds.
@Motorfirez2 жыл бұрын
@B45 Monzon actually always mantained Griffith was his most difficult opponent. The 2nd Griffith fight was very close . I think Monzon was a bit ageing by the time he fought Valdes - I also think he'd have Koed Valdes in the rematch if it wasn't for the problem with his right hand.

Used to box out of the 23rd PAL in Philadelphia back in the early 70's. It was Joe Frazier's gym. Used to spar with Jimmy Young (got my ass kicked), as well as some of Ali's sparring partners. Also sparred with Stanley "Kitten" Hayward who had fought a title fight with Emile Griffith and bloodied Hayward's nose (almost pissed my pants when that happened). Back then Phila. was the hot spot for boxing in the US. Bobby "Boogaloo:" Watts, Willie "The Worm Monroe", "Gypsy Joe" Harris were some of the other names. Never met Benny Brisoe but definitely remember the name/aura surrounding this great fighter. Mike Battle

Hmmm...Will have to read more about Medel. Thanks.
@crazykocounters47412 жыл бұрын
@@RichtheFightHistorian Sorry for the late reply Rich, but if you want to know a thing or two about here what I can tell you about him: Jose Medel was devastating knockout artist during his time who is highly respected by legends including Fighting Harada and Eder Jofre. Medel was consistent highly ranked bantamweight contender who beat the likes of Dwight Hawkins, Manuel Barrios, Eloy Sanchez, Jesus Pimental, Walter McGowan, Jose Toluco Lopez and would be the first man to knock out Harada. Eder Jofre respected Medel so much stating that Medel was the best fighter he has ever faced saying when he beat him at 1961 (in a very classic very underrated brawl), he felt "unbeatable". He also said Medel is best puncher he has ever came across. Medel was never known for his crazy knockout power, but his precise and high accurate counters. Here are some quotes I found about him: "He might not have the biggest punch but he was accurate, with a lot of technique and precision. That made him a very dangerous opponent." - Eder Jofre "His quick counterpunches were invisible." - Fighting Harada "I think it was a left hook that caught me in the 9th round. I really don't know what happened." - Jesus Pimental "it came so fast and so hard I didn't know what hit me." - Misunori Seki An interviewer once asked Jesus Pimental if Ruben Olivares was the hardest puncher he ever fought and he replied that Olivares wasn't and was never the hardest puncher he fought, then would claimed that the only fighter to ever hurt him was another mexican and his name was Jose Medel. Even tho despite all of this, Medel is more famously known in an anime called Ashita No Joe. A very very old anime from the late 60's and early 70's. He was mention in a manga explained by a character named Tangei Danpei at chapter 30. Here's the link: chap.manganelo.com/manga-lh97553/chapter-30 In the anime anime, he is mentioned in episode 15. Here's the link: gogoplay1.com/videos/ashita-no-joe-episode-15 Medel is known for being one of boxing's greatest non champions for very hardcore boxing fans today. I hope you like the story.

I had the honor of meeting 'Bad' Bennie back in the late 60's when my father introduced me to him when he took me to work with him one day. They both worked in the Sanitation Dept. of Philadelphia. Bennie was driving a trash truck and when my father pulled up to the truck, he got me out to see Bennie. He leaned out of the driver's side window and smiled at me. I'll never forget that menacing, gargoylish face. Later in life I rooted for Bennie when he fought Valdez for the title on TV. I thought he won too. He seemed like two different people; a soft spoken nice guy in person, but something out of a nightmare when you saw him in the ring. R.I.P, champ.
