A look back at the career of Greg Haugen, who would make an unlikely rise out of Tough Man contests in Alaska to become two-time lightweight champion of the world.

I love Haugen. Casual boxing fans will only know about him getting knocked out in 5 by Chavez after calling JC's opponents "Tijuana taxi cab drivers." That fight drew 132,000. He beat Jimmy Paul, Vinnie Pazienza, Ray Mancini, Hector Camacho and others. He was a three-time world champ (IBF 135 twice, WBO 140). I loved his smart ass attitude. He had a good career. 🥊👍

I followed Greg from the time he won the tough man contest in Alaska. He had all the right stuff to move to the top, and he did. Boxing is so damn tough, that even when you have all the pieces, you still need to continue to study your craft and train likes its going to be your last fight. No other sport, puts that much pressure on you and your family. So when you hear, a boxer's hardships, it's reflects how much the bubble has taken out of him to compete at such a high level. By boxing standards, Haugen had a very successful career. Two time champion who beat some extremely talented champions such as Camacho, Paul & and a poorly rebooted Ray Mancini. No excuses should be made for Greg. He was terrific during his reign. At some point, they all suffer a downfall and we all seem to feel that something went terribly wrong. But considering what some of these boxers made of themselves, it's easy to conclude that they made the right decision to give boxing a go

Greg is from an era where real tough guys talked with their fists, not their mouths. The trash talk was cheap. He didn't need to sound like a Conor McGregor to get over with fight fans. That's a career to be proud of, three time world champion and was an underdog in all three of those fights. Respect.
