Tragic yet a necessity of a documentary Rich to release out for anyone to view. It’s proves that even with all the talent a boxer can have you need that hard core mental discipline to be a complete success. But what chance did Greg Page really have when Don King ruled the roast of heavyweights back in the 80s. That era was such a mixed bunch and a up and down careers for a lot of great heavyweights back then. Thanks Rich for this one, Greg Page was still a fabulous boxer and he deserved a good documentary to compliment him.

Yes, I think Tim Witherspoon even mentioned this on his channel but basically they'd end up in debt to Don King or find themselves having to swirl into these low-pay bouts (always assurance the big dance was around the corner) then they'd end up being disillusioned, rebelling with a "why bother training" attitude and soon lawsuits and just never getting on a solid track again.

Greg Page was a real WarHorse overall in his career and was involved in the ring with 9 world champions and over 10 recognized top contenders in his career and crowning it with becoming a world heavyweight title champion is what any man dreams of. Page was an outstanding amature boxer and its a bit sad he did not wait 2 years til the 1980 Olympics as he showed to be a serious medal contender. What is sad is that Page despite fighting on like a warrior, his career faded from the top to fast and after he lost hisa WBA world title would never again fight for any world championship. And having demon promotor Don King screwing him like he did to Holmes, Witherspoon, Ali, Shavers, Tyson etc-etc-etc sucked out a lot of his heart for the sport.

Well done Documentary! Marvelous work here. My own personal opinion is that we often see great amateurs whose talent doesn't translate into the professionals. Going from three rounds to 10, 12 & 15 is a steep hill to climb and it's often difficult sustaining the commitment, conditioning and sacrifice it takes to be a great professional boxer. To his credit, he did win the title, yet his career was extremely shaky before and certainly after he secured it. A damn good boxer nonetheless, but not someone who's name will come up when discussing the great HW's in boxing

That breaks my heart, another sad ending in boxing, the most unforgiving sport for those who stay in to long.

I had forgotten about this brother, he was a great fighter, it's a shame it had to end this way. Is there any happy ending for any boxer associated with Don King ? I would really like to know.

To say Don King was shady would be an understatement!

Great story... 😢 I was always a Big fan of him growing up. That weight in that Era was a seesaw generation. If people only understood what happens behind the scenes of a fight. Great story

Very sad but great fighter in his time. MAY HE REST IN PEACE

It was sad to see him getting pummeled in his later years. He had gone from a top quality world level heavyweight champion to a heavy bag on legs.

Greg Page R.I.P….I saw the Page…Young fight in person in Atlantic City…I was pulling for Young because he was a Philly guy from the neighborhood…oh well still enjoyed the fight…why is it whenever King’s name is associated with a boxer you know that fighters life is going to get screwed up…the man is POISON…Rich thanks for the video.

As usual great work Rich. The heavyweight division was loaded in the 80's. Hopefully you'll get around to covering a few of our hometown heavyweights some day Floyd Patterson, Tyson & Cooney.
@RichtheFightHistorian2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, should have Cooney and Patterson later this year.

As usual a great synopsis of a hugely talented boxer that peaked early, realied on ability..when most contenders reach their best years he was finished.

One of my favorites from back in the day. I prefer to remember him at hist best, dismantling Coetzee.

Also suffered from ridiculous expectations people were hyping him as " potentially . better than Ali " . No way he could ever be that great.

Rich's channel and Rummy's Corner are becoming my two 'can't miss' boxing channels on YT. I really love looking at the careers of these great contenders and Greg Page was one who jusssst never got to that HW champion level and yet was indeed very talented and seemed like he had it all but.. ya, he just couldn't keep it all together. and this featured one of my all-time favorite HW contenders: Tony Tubbs!
