When I first started watching this episode I was ready to have a bad time, but when 7 first spoke to her father in the beginning I was like "ok, it's gonna be a full lean in parody to 80s cartoons" and then I kinda started enjoying myself. In all honesty, I’ve come to accept that there’ll be good, bad and mid episodes of Rick and Morty each season. This one was clear filler due to creative burnout. We have those every season. So, two fun facts and some commentary: - Ice-T voices Magma Q, while Harmon voices Ice-T. - This was written by the guy who did the Heist, Planetina, and Night Family episodes. Obviously he's a gimmick writer, not a narrative one, and he's not great when he doesn't have something to explicitly parody. I think this episode might have been them trying to cram a couple season's worth of Roiland's notes into a single episode, more to get them out of the way than anything else. IIRC there was some buzz at one point that Alphabetrium and the Numericons kept getting brought up in the writer's room but not going anywhere. If they just wanted a clean slate, I can understand shoving this one out.

I think they found a formula for rick and morty which seems to be a pretty consistent pattern >intro episodes is a cold open most likely canonical >at least 1 jerry episode, and summer episode usually its around the 3rd and 6th episode that each happen(one of summers first is the big head guys and then the weird face suckers) >around the 5th episode is a canonical episode the final 2 episodes or 1 are canonical >the 7th episode is a "test" of different humor, the sex dragon if I remember correctly is around the 7th episode >morty gets a dedicated episode where he kinda just fucks up or something and rick comes and helps. there's just a vague pattern the story aren't guessable but there seems to be a pattern. I liked last season a little more despite some of the early episode this season were great.

My problem with this episode is that it’s not strong enough to be the ONLY plot. Episodes with single A plots need to be on the level of Vat of Acid and Unmortricken. Compare those episodes to this and it’s clear why this didn’t work imo

Anyone else notice how deathly dependent this season in particular has been on bringing back old one-off characters from earlier seasons? A lot of Rick's friends in the premiere, Unity, Water T, etc. I honestly wouldn't mind this if it actually payed off, but most of the episodes with these characters have either been mid or just straight up bad, and they're overdoing it now to the point where it feels like pandering. Imo a character like Water T worked _because_ he was a one-off, a random but funny and iconic joke that didn't overstay it's welcome. Then you get an episode like this that takes that and just drags it on, losing sight of what made it great in the first place.
