I don’t think Beth is a clone per sey. Younger Rick said Rick was living with an abandoned version of his Beth. That might imply there are versions of Rick who willingly abandoned their families to join the Citadel. The Ricks who refused their offer had their Beths and Dianes murdered. Some of those Rick may have gave in to the Citadel, but our Rick (the Rickest of the Ricks) told them to eff off.
@cortster123 жыл бұрын
No, that's just the version he's always lived with. Remember, this isn't his original reality.
@bohansenboh3 жыл бұрын
@ron Gordon Yeah they're in an alternate universe where Rick joined the federation, instead of inadvertently killing his wife and child with his own hubris. That's why Rick hates Jerry so much, because even tho Jerry sucks he's always willing to admit when he's wrong. His humility is the reason that Beth loves him because she hates her dad's hubris because the recklessness of his youth and the idea that Rick could be doing anything else in the world right now called to him more than being a good father and the reason Beth feels like she grew up without a father. Rick resents Jerry because he thinks Beth could do better and he can't understand that Jerry's better than all the other Ricks in the one way that Rick could never be, he depends on her for his self esteem and that's the reason Beth loves him because she know he'll never leave. And the Paradox is that this Rick was the one that loved his family enough to stay. And also the reason that Rick hates going to the therapist, Dr. Wong, because he doesn't want Beth to find out that he's not her real dad, because that will ruin their relationship and expose Rick as the most pitiable man on the face of the earth. One who can't live with the fact that he killed his wife and kid by staying and who loved them so much he can't stay away. That's why when young Rick call's him sad for staying with his wife and kids it pisses him off because it is sad, but not in the way that young Rick thinks is sad. And this leads me to Diana the variable across multiple realities. Or it's just a fucking clone and I'm assigning fucked up backstories to cartoon characters in the middle of the day instead of getting ready for work.
@gelrose81173 жыл бұрын
@ron Gordon I know that. The point is there are some multiverses where Beth is still alive. Young Rick said C-137 Rick was being “one of those creeps who lives with an abandoned Beth.”
@CinnamonQuills3 жыл бұрын
Beth even refers to the fact in an early episode, if not the first episode, that he "took off" a long time ago and then spontaneously showed up again one day. If she was a clone either she would have remembered him raising her alone after ten or so, or she wouldn't have kids and a long-term marriage. He had no special attachment to the Cronenberg universe Beth that he was living with at the start of the series, she was just another one of the infinite Beths in a universe that didn't have a Rick, either because he left on an adventure and died or went to the Citadel (and died).
@jaanfo38743 жыл бұрын
This. I only watched the episode once but keep hearing people/reviewers comment on Beth being a clone and I wonder what I missed, because my understanding is that he just moved in with a previously abandoned Beth, not a clone he created of her. We’ve already seen him abandon one version of Beth. It’s not hard to imagine that’s happened multiple times by now. Although it does make me question the various pictures and memories we see of Rick with an infant/toddler Morty. If his Beth died then he’d have no reason to spend time with a young version of her son.

What if that whole memory was fabracated just to trick the younger version of Rick? That version would have no idea what was the real memory because all of his memories were created by bird person and not rick himself. If that were the case then the fact that young rick dislikes how he'll turn out may be false. Even the idea that beth and ricks wife died because that would have just been bird person connecting the dots either on his own or through info that Rick fed him.

I dont think she was meant to be a clone. The line implied that Rick, probably sometime in his 50s or 60s, moved into a reality where Rick had abandoned his family before they were killed and that timeline's Rick was for whatever reason absent. The line also implies that this is a fairly common thing to be known by the younger version of Rick. What is also interesting is that it's established the memories can only know what Bird Person knows. That means Bird Person knows that some Ricks move in with abandoned Beth's and may tie in to that picture of a baby, presumed to be Morty, from the episode Get Schwifty.

Memory Rick says "a version of our abandoned daughter", implying the only way Beth survives is via Rick leaving forever or dying young. Remember at the beginning of the series, Jerry saying Rick is just back into their lives? I believe "our" Rick just travelled to a dimension where Beth was alive and just took his place, in a time where Beth was already safe from whatever would've killed her had Rick stayed. However, "Our" Rick also says Morty is a hypothetical grandson, so there's that.
@rg1124nov3 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's what I got from it too. Not really sure where people are getting clone. Especially since memory Rick specifically says "living with a version of our abandoned daughter" which implies he probably just went to a dimension where that Rick abandoned his Beth

I think Rick left his universe and went to a universe where Rick went to the citadel without his family being killed… and then our Rick just came into beths life “after 20years of not seeing her”. Rick’s use other Rick’s universes like hermit crabs
@johnathanbarrett78033 жыл бұрын
I think you're a little off on Beth being a clone. At one point in the episode, Rick tells BP that there are infinite versions of every event across infinite timelines. I think there are some universes where Rick didn't have his family killed, or where he was killed instead of his family, and all the Ricks that we've seen so far have all gone into those realities and killed that Rick and/or just started living as that Rick in that timeline.
@kayburcky71463 жыл бұрын
The beth version we see isnt a clone. It's a Beth from another parallel universe where her Rick abandoned her, which is stated with "You're one of those creeps who moves in with abandoned adult Beths." and "You live with a version of 9ur dead daughter" (version, not Clone!). And i think that brings in a whole lot of more explanation for ricks whole behaviour. For example why he's so quick suggesting to abandon summer in the post apocalyptic scavenger world after their parents divorced, and his whole f*ck it attitude towards the family and especially Morty, and his rage about "Jerry's unemployed Genes in his grandchildren". It's possible that this family is a mere shadow of what Rick remembers his family to be and that would explain his suffering including the catchfrase "Wubba Wubba dub dub" meaning "I'm in great pain" as *Bird person* who might know of all this, explains.
@motomilky31003 жыл бұрын
I believe that's what happened to, but in one epsido Rick says "it goes without saying that the Tickets Rick has the Mortiest Morty" implying that our Morty is the c137 Morty but that wouldn't make sense since c137 Morty doesn't exist if Beth dies so that's why I'm confused
@ashtonoak43703 жыл бұрын
She is a clone no matter what because Rick didn't invent the portal gun until child Beth was dead and gone. Dead dead. Like blown up. The parallel universes Rick made once the first portal gun was active regardless is a dead Beth. So all's this is nice. But Beth at age 6-8 is dead
@Bruce201473 жыл бұрын
Here is my opinion: In season 1, Morty destroied his own earth by spreading virus and make all people into bugs. Considering the current universe is where Rick and Birdperson met; thefore, maybe the current Morty is from the destroyed universe and that Beth was abandoned by a Rick who might be dead. The C-137 Rick took care of her. That's why young Rick said "abandoned adult Beths". Meanwhile, Rick put a decoy Rick and a clone Beth (or a doppelganer) in his own earth, and decoy Rick died with the the Morty who is replaced by the current Morty. Therefore, Rick comes back to his earth and decide to abandon that earth.

About the connection with the "totally fabricated origin story", I will just leave this here: - Younger Rick uses the same makeshift Portal Gun (or Portal Gun mark 1). - The memory where someone yells "killing us won't bring her back", those Ricks are wearing the same kind of regalia as the one who blew Diane and Beth. I believe these are the ones who took the offer to accept the Portal Gun formula and joined some sort of group. - When Young Rick says "you're one of those freaks who move in with abandoned adult Beth", followed by "you live with a VERSION of our dead daughter". I've seen many people saying that this means all Beths are clones, but this only takes in account the last phrase. The first part clearly implies that infinite possibilities mean some Beths die, others don't, and some Rick's whose Beths did die go on to live with the ones abandoned by other Ricks.

My favorite part is how it appears that Rick had a relatively normal, stable, and happy childhood in a two-parent household. He looked liked a great kid. He wasn't necessarily born as nor raised to be an arrogant, narcissistic nihilist--even his 35 year old self seems very chill compared to his 70 year old self--but turned into that as a result of decades of universe-hopping. Guess it provides a much needed lesson for the "wannabe" Ricks in the fandom: Even if you are a highly intelligent person, you don't HAVE to be a prick, because your "hero" Rick wasn't for a decent chunk of his life.
@Jerry42813 жыл бұрын
9:17 he didn't say anything about that he said it was a version where she was abandoned of his dead daughter. Not about her being a clone. As most Beth's only see their Rick every so often due to being part of the citidal and some sci-fi riggermerole

I didn't get that Beth was a clone. I think Rick is living in an alternate dimension with a Beth that didn't die or was abandoned. The scene from Bloodridge definitely looks like the end battle scene from attack of the clones.

My favourite reveal was that blood ridge was actually a fight won, and just a defeat to rick due to the significance of it in terms of his friendship with BP. I feel like that was a huge deal being able to actually see blood ridge after hearing about it and waiting for so long. Additionally, i thought it was an amazing touch to have Tammy admit she really did love BP - just sentimental drool that i, as a viewer, lap up. And the personal growth and maturity of Rick admitting to his memory self that his existence doesn't make him an enemy was really touching to see

Tbh base on this episode I think Rick interprets the relationship with BP differently than how he does like I think Rick likes him more than BP does. Like he just thinks of him as a friend. And it wouldn’t surprise that Rick feels that way because Rick doesn’t care abt ppl except for a select few despite how they feel towards him.

Great summary of the episode along with the movie references that i wouldn't have known. However there are 2 errors in your summary 1st: the "C-137" beth isn't a clone but an abandoned beth. If you remember that the show mentioned in season 1, Rick "returned" to her after the original Rick of that universe abandoned her. 2nd: No Rick didn't care about the extra Intel about the federal government. He was just humouring young Rick who was still in his hero phase of battling against the government (much like space beth) but of course it's just a portrayal of young Rick by bird person. So no current Rick doesn't have any interest in the extra Intel at all but grew to like young Rick enough for current Rick to think about bringing him to real life and having a beer with. Sorry for the long comment but this gave me a serious itch that i needed to scratch and that is pointing out these 2 errors. Keep up the good work tho

I don't think #13 is correct. I don't think Beth is a clone...she's an alternate Beth from an alternate timeline where she didn't die. So this implies Rick not only lost his wife, but his daughter as well, which would mean no family, no Jerry, no Summer, no Morty. "What is a Morty?" Edit: Well shit...guess I should have read the comments first. I'm not alone in this line of thought.

The episode didn't imply that Beth was a clone the whole time. "you've been living with a version of your dead daughter." can easily just be a universe where Beth didn't die.

I could be remembering this wrong but didn't Rick and Morty flee from their original universe in the 1st season due to some apocalyptic shenanigans? So technically his version of original clone Beth is dead so wouldn't that mean this version of Beth is alive? Unless events in this universe played out the same but that would make this Beth both an alternate version and a clone. I can see why Rick was so partial to his family in earlier seasons. That technically isn't his family, aside from Morty.

extra fun fact: Dan Harmon was a Executive Producer of Charlie Kaufman's 2015 stop-motion movie, Anomalisa, which was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars. The movie was also produced by Starburns Industries. the movie itself and season 1 & the early parts of season 2 were made by the production company at the same time.

The specific shot at Blood Ridge where the walkers are towering over resistance soldiers is definitely a reference to the Animatrix episode, The Second Renaissance part 2. There’s a shot in that where machine walkers are facing off against the two human soldiers from a POV angle. It’s almost an exact replica of that scene.
