Back then marijuana was actually nicknamed "Mary Jane" We from that era knew this & knew what he was singing about. It was a well known fact during that time. Plus Rick had no problem letting you know. We all knew he was high as a kite ALL THE TIME, LOL....RIP'aradise Rick James

Rick was definitely a staple in funk. James Brown made funk a form of music. George Clinton and Parliament made it a lifestyle. Rick James made it sexy. Damn I love our culture!

Fun Facts: *As mentioned elsewhere in the comments, this song is an allegory for his love of weed. * SOUL ALIVE was a shorter-lived local tv show based in the NYC tri-state area that was patterned after Soul Train. It featured kids from area high schools as the dancers. This video was taken from an episode of the show. *The “Mary Jane” theme continued in the form of a spin-off group he produced called, “The Mary Jane Girls”. You should check out a couple of their songs as well, most notably: ALL NIGHT LONG IN MY HOUSE MUSICAL LOVE CANDY MAN

Radio stations. That's how we got new music first. Then maybe Soul Train, American Bandstand, Don Kirshner's Rock Concert or a variety show or awards show. But, for sure it was the radio 1st, 2nd, 3rd.

Scene: San Diego Kool Funk Festival 1978. Summer. Packed football stadium. In rolls Rick James down on the one yard line on a golf cart with thee BIGGEST life-sized joint lit up blowing copious smoke hazes across the football field. Jumps off the cart. The horns bust the beginning banging beat to ‘Bustin’ Out on that L Seven Square’ and the crowd goes berzerk!! AND this just after Teddy Pendegrass had just finished his hot set with Love TKO, Close the Door, Turn Off the Lights!!! The sultry balmy night in Call solidified my love for all things live. Rick James was last and he turned that concert out! Besides Prince, nobody does it better than Rick James! I guess that’s why him and Prince stayed competing 🤷🏽‍♀️ but I loved them both. 🕊🙏🏽❤️💐

I really like Rick James, good musician, producer, and just a smart dude. Don't judge him from Chappelle's show, he was in rough shape at that point, you go back to his interviews in 70s and 80s guy was on it.

This song was an allegory. Mary Jane was slang for Marijuana, which Rick made it known he loved. But of course, it could have been about a woman. Rick called his music Funk & Roll.

The music from this era is usually called "SOUL MUSIC" 1960 to 80 or so, at least that's how the DJs from the Midnight Soul show defined it and I'm not sure if I remember if that was the name of that Indie program! I think it was the STAX VOLT record label that pioneered "Soul" music as an alternative to the clean, precise and " non threatening" Mowtown sound! It incorporated elements of blues, Gospel, jazz and funk into a sweaty and heady mixture! Starting with Ray Charles and James Brown to Sly Stone and Isaac Hayes to Parliament and Ohio Players! BTW "P FUNK" refers specifically to Parliament! They are also known as Funkadelic on another record label! Take all of this with a grain of salt, due to my foggy memory!

Rick James was such a major star who deliberately set a plan to take it to the top after seeing all of his former bandmates do so and did so to the letter. You MUST check him out doing "Give It To Me Baby", "Super Freak", "Syanding At The Top" (with The Temptations), "Fire & Desire" (with Teena Marie) and "Ebony Eyes" (with Smokey Robinson). You must also check out him doing "You And I" live in Long Beach, California (even if you don't review it due to it length and language - it is Rick James at his best: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpC9i2V7dsmLY68)

Saw BOTH Rick James at the same club in LA back in the day. The contrast was amazing. Rick was partying with his entourage in the middle of the club behind the velvet ropes while Prince leaned up against the wall all alone quietly sulking at all of the attention that Rick was getting that night. Love and miss them both. Great music legacies. RIP
