I worked at Studio 54 in the early 1980's after its reopening. There was a long play dance version of Super Freak about 30-40 minutes long that got the crowd grooving and the snow falling. DJs would play it late into the night, after 2 am. It was doubly mind-blowing when I would see Rick James himself show up with his entourage of like 6-7 peeps floating all around him. That was quite often, in fact the staff made jokes about how often he came around.

More than forty years later, this song is still memorable and fascinating. It's got a great arrangement of the instruments, the lyrics are great as well as tongue-in-cheek, and it obviously pays homage to the old do-wop and Motown groups. At the same time, it is an awesome blend of disco, funk, and rock 'n' roll. It's accompanying video is entertaining as well; once again, I would say it's tongue-in-cheek. Rick James was of course, one-of-a-kind as far as music is concerned. Rest in peace Rick, and I hope to meet you in the afterlife.

I worked in Hollywood (film and TV production) for almost 20 years and met Rick James on a show he was a guest on and I was a member of the crew. We chatted about for about 30 minutes and he was one of the coolest and nicest celebrities I met out there. About 3 months later, I was working a movie premiere at the Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood. James came walking down the red carpet, saw me and walked straight towards me, smiled, reached out his hand to shake mine and said: "My Brother Man." He remembered me but forgot my name, but that was okay. We ran into each several more times after that event and he always made a point to come up to me, say hello and shake my hand. He died way too soon. R.I.P. my Brother Man.

On August 2, 1991, singer Rick James was arrested along with girlfriend for imprisoning and torturing a 24-year-old woman. James threatened Alley with a gun and told her he would shoot her if she tried to flee. He and his girlfriend then tied her up and burned her about 20 times with the crack pipe. They also sexually abused her and forced her to smoke crack. In 1993, while James was out on bail for the August 2 incident, James assaulted music executive Mary Sauger in West Hollywood. She said she met James and his girlfriend Hijazi for a business meeting and that the two kidnapped and beat her for 20 hours. Wow, cocaine is a hell of a drug.
