He was extremely handsome and humble as you said and we had just moved into our new house in the Dallas area in 1985 and putting up stockings Christmas Eve when I heard his plane crashed and he was killed along with his band members. A sad day for sure for all of his fans and family.

I met Rick Nelson for a TV interview at a South Texas airport a few months before his death. I was too young when he was really famous as a kid but loved his Garden Party song of the early 1970s. I was a young reporter at the time I was sent to try to get an interview with him before he had a concert at South Padre Island. I was unsure what to ask him much less approach him. He couldn’t have been nicer and gave me a good interview. I was so impressed with his kindness and it was an honor to meet him.

Despite the shyness he did have a tongue in cheek sense of humor. He and Elvis were in competition with each other for record sales that made each other bigger in the music world and yet respectful of what each brought to the Garden Party. Modern politicians could learn a lot from them. In the same appraisal of Garden Parties I think Rickey's rendition of "I went to a Garden Party ," to be one of the smoothest vocal deliveries of all time.

From what everyone has ever said about Ricky Nelson, his outstanding attributes were that he was a truly beautiful person inside and out and that he was a genuinely nice and caring guy. Rick Nelson was an amazingly gifted talent whose life was cut off far too soon. I cannot help but feel frustrated about some of the unfortunate timing regarding his professional life and bumped opportunities. If only the timing had been different in certain situations, Rick Nelson could have and should have been celebrated far greater than he had been. Nonetheless, Rick Nelson's music and legacy will live on forever.

My Dad was a studio musician who played guitar with Chet Atkins, John Ritter's Dad TeX, Gene Autrey, who late in his life purchased the California Angels.I along with my husband Walter Downing worked for Norman Whitfield during the filming of Car Wash as songwriters& later Norman allowed me to work as an apprentice producer and when Whitfield/Warner Bros. disbanded that was as close as I got to fame and the excitement of learning from an iconic figure in American Music. Letterman is intimidated by being in the presence of show biz royalty. If he dissed McCartney the same way, as one commenter says, he was probably intimidated by him also. These are men who have really worked hard to make their mark by producing original material and have won fans all over the world. Letterman couldn’t even dream of having that kind of success. So, to build himself up inside, he tries to tear them down. HE DOESN’T EVEN SHOW THE ALBUM COVER!! 😤 PATHETIC! Like his forever cool self, Rick just graciously goes along with it so he can do what he really came for: to sing his music. 👏❤️

hey letterman, I wish Johnny had been there for the Rick interview. Just because someone was classy and genuine didn't mean you had to be a prime walking, talking example of a jerk. You really went all out to make this humble, down to earth, kind of shy guy comfortable. Still don't know how your sucky show lasted so long.

That was an odd interview. Letterman interviewing a Legend. Is this the best you could do Dave ?
