Ricky Nelson was a very handsome, talented man who never showed off. He was humble and kind. They don't make entertainers like him anymore.

I was very surprised to learn that not only did he write many of his songs, but he sold over 60 million albums, had 24 gold records and is the number 3 musician in the world to reach such goals. He was extremely handsome and humble as you said and we had just moved into our new house in the Dallas area in 1985 and putting up stockings Christmas Eve when I heard his plane crashed and he was killed along with his band members. A sad day for sure for all of his fans and family.

@Mary Cleve I remember his daughter, Tracy telling her story of how Eerol Flynn came to her and told her that her dad would die and wished her Happy New Year. Ricky passed away on New Years Eve, upsetting Tracy greatly. 😡

I met Rick Nelson for a TV interview at a South Texas airport a few months before his death. I was too young when he was really famous as a kid but loved his Garden Party song of the early 1970s. I was a young reporter at the time I was sent to try to get an interview with him before he had a concert at South Padre Island. I was unsure what to ask him much less approach him. He couldn’t have been nicer and gave me a good interview. I was so impressed with his kindness and it was an honor to meet him.

Despite the shyness he did have a tongue in cheek sense of humor. He and Elvis were in competition with each other for record sales that made each other bigger in the music world and yet respectful of what each brought to the Garden Party. Modern politicians could learn a lot from them. In the same appraisal of Garden Parties I think Rickey's rendition of "I went to a Garden Party ," to be one of the smoothest vocal deliveries of all time.

From what everyone has ever said about Ricky Nelson, his outstanding attributes were that he was a truly beautiful person inside and out and that he was a genuinely nice and caring guy. Rick Nelson was an amazingly gifted talent whose life was cut off far too soon. I cannot help but feel frustrated about some of the unfortunate timing regarding his professional life and bumped opportunities. If only the timing had been different in certain situations, Rick Nelson could have and should have been celebrated far greater than he had been. Nonetheless, Rick Nelson's music and legacy will live on forever.

I read that he was supposedly engaged to Helen Blair but his mother and in laws did not like her. You listen to his children talk about her and they said she took very good care of him, he was happy for the first time in a long while. I hope that was true. Until seeing this I never realized just how shy and unassuming he was. Tragic to hear on the radio that your dad died.

I'm a cousin of Ricky Nelson's. Ozzie Nelson and my father were second cousins. We Nelsons are mostly musicians and sports enthusciats. My Dad was a studio musician who played guitar with Chet Atkins, John Ritter's Dad TeX, Gene Autrey, who late in his life purchased the California Angels.I along with my husband Walter Downing worked for Norman Whitfield during the filming of Car Wash as songwriters& later Norman allowed me to work as an apprentice producer and when Whitfield/Warner Bros. disbanded that was as close as I got to fame and the excitement of learning from an iconic figure in American Music. Letterman is intimidated by being in the presence of show biz royalty. If he dissed McCartney the same way, as one commenter says, he was probably intimidated by him also. These are men who have really worked hard to make their mark by producing original material and have won fans all over the world. Letterman couldn’t even dream of having that kind of success. So, to build himself up inside, he tries to tear them down. HE DOESN’T EVEN SHOW THE ALBUM COVER!! 😤 PATHETIC! Like his forever cool self, Rick just graciously goes along with it so he can do what he really came for: to sing his music. 👏❤️

Letterman interviews and quizzes Rick Nelson about Elvis? Here's a guy who was a child actor on radio and television, and through television, and every week, brought rock 'n' roll into America's living rooms, plus introduced the great guitarist James Burton. Letterman will not be missed when he retires from late night television.

Agreed Tom. I remember watching this in the original airing and I was stunned. It was as if Rick's sole relevance was Elvis. Rick had so many credentials that other would kill to have. It was nice to see that after all those years, Rick Nelson was still the same guy, quiet and shy. He deserved a far better interviewer, though. The problem is, David Letterman was a comedian long before he became a talk show host. I would have loved to see him interviewed by someone like Larry King or Charlie Rose, someone who would have gone much further than talking about whose f*****g house he lived in.

I was just a month old when Rick was killed in a plane crash on new years Eve 1985. I'm such a fangirl of his music, ever since I was a teen. It's crazy that I'm now the same age that Ricky was when he appeared on this letterman episode.

Rick Nelson handled that interview well. Letterman simply cannot interview because he manages to make it all about himself to showcase his off the wall humor.

Rick Nelson did handle the interview well; he played along nicely played along with Lettermans sense of humour. Of course I don't see it the way you it. Rick is clean cut. He just keeps his private life private; there is no need to expand on what everyone knows what you are doing behind private doors.

letterman was new to late night. he tells rick he's a fan within a minute so i imagine maybe he's awe-struck to some extent. i'm a fan of both.

I agree. I’m not a fan of David’s. I only watched the video bc I’m a fan of Rickys. It’s hard to find entertainers like Ricky these days.

Letterman is a huge Elvis fan so I "knew" he was going to take the interview there.

Letterman did a goofy interview. Dave was focused on Elvis and Ricky's friendship. He had other famous people over. Ricky was also close friends with George Harrison who would stay over at the house sometimes. Ricky's sons Matt and Gunnar used to call him Uncle George. Bob Dylan was a huge fan of Ricky's music and would often visit as well.

yes; Letterman is a suck-up and no talent. Just a snarky smart-ass. And not enough sense to shut up and have Rick Nelson talk

hey letterman, I wish Johnny had been there for the Rick interview. Just because someone was classy and genuine didn't mean you had to be a prime walking, talking example of a jerk. You really went all out to make this humble, down to earth, kind of shy guy comfortable. Still don't know how your sucky show lasted so long.
