Jack Kramer. In his heyday of Martin and Lewis and the clubs it was all largely an act, if not completely. Later in life he did start to drink very heavily and life imitated art. For the most part of his notable career though it was all an act. He drank apple juice or lemonade and took sips.

@@patriceaqa288 Great reply Patrice. Dean was a pro. Definitely a party animal too. It was probably that mix, and the historical popularity of the comedy drunk, that inspired his on-stage persona. No one could be that perfectly on-cue if they were actually as drunk as he was pretending to be, but it is also true that no one could be that accurate in their portrayal without getting embarrassingly drunk in their personal life. He played this pitch-perfect. It was only entertainment in its day, but this qualifies as real art in the long-view.

Dino was such a great guy. I had a pass back-stage several times when the gang was having dinner, and Dino was always one of the first to leave the party and go home. Frank's nickname for Sammy was "Smokey" because Sam smoked about 4 packs of cigarettes a day, Dino smoked a lot also and both of them succumbed to lung disease. Sammy also drank a lot and was treated for cirrhosis but it was the smoking and throat cancer that ended his life as it did with Dino, who had emphysema. Frank rarely smoked but often had a cigarette as a prop, but he didn't inhale much of the time, and he constantly kept his breathing passages open by practicing holding his breath under water in his pool. Great old days, none of which we'll ever see again in the entertainment business, no one can successfully imitate them or even have all the fun the guys had, teasing and riding each other raw! Sure, they had a falling out occasionally, as all friends do, but in the end, they all admired each other's tremendous talents! RIP to them all, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis,Jr., Peter Lawford, aka "The Summit" as they called themselves! We'll never see that caliber of entertainment again!

@jefffaller84744 жыл бұрын
Talk shows were marketed to a different (older) crowd in those days, times have changed and the industry had to change to survive. Also, remember that the reason these shows came on at 10:00 PM was because the content was a little edgier for an older audience where bits like this would be appreciated. Admittedly, Jimmy Fallon has tons of talent and does some hilarious bits that Carson, Leno and Letterman could have done if they just had the creative energy or the audience for it. Some of Leno's interviews in the last 5 years have pretty much told the story about how little he enjoyed filling the Tonight Show with lower level talent who were there to pitch some mediocre movie or mediocre album while they really lacked any substantial talent to warrant Tonight Show couch time. The music, film, comedic and arts industry has changed for the worse over the last couple of decades, and I wouldn't expect to see it change back anytime soon. Remember when SNL sketch comedy actors were referred to as "not ready for prime time" guess what, there prime time talent now.

Johnny also died of lung disease
@mjlejer32414 жыл бұрын
@@anderander5662 Yes, Johnny was heard to say more than once about his cigarettes; "I wish I could quit these things, they're killing me!" And sadly, Johnny died of emphysema. That's not an easy way to go, not being able to get a full breath of air, coughing, feeling rotten, but cigs were thought to be part of being "cool" from about the 1920's when women started smoking them, to about the time people finally realized they were killing a lot of people, their friends. So smoking did decrease some this century, but not enough, it's still killing people who had a long-time habit from the 20th century.
