These people were some of the most down to earth people that ever came out of Hollywood. Their TV show really did represent the values that most American families emulated and aspired to. Too bad people don’t have positive TV shows like The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet to watch these days we just might have a more positive and decent society in our country today.

How the times have changed! I used to teach my middle school students about pop music & culture from the 50’s to the present day. Here’s how I introduced them to the Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet: I’d say, “I’m thinking of a TV show about a real life family, and the dad’s name is Ozzie...” They’d all call out, “The Osborne’s!” Then I’d say no, show them the cover of the video box The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, and play for them Ricky’s first singing appearance on the show (4/10/57) when he sang Fat’s Domino’s “I’m Walkin’.” I told them Ricky was the first true “video star” in that he became famous because of his appearances on TV. But my favorite clip from that episode was at the end when all four of the Nelsons sang a song together in harmony. That surely must have been one of Ozzie’s proudest moments! Thanks for posting the interview!

I have often thought when so many kids having abusive or drunk parents, watching shows like Ozzie & Harriet, or Leave it to Beaver, or Family Ties, or Different Strokes, etc.--must see what an ideal family looks like.
@ValleyoftheRogue2 жыл бұрын
They had their own problems, especially surrounding Rick. That was the thing: They really were like many families in this country, not "idealized" at all. The 1950s weren't like this at all-women continued in the labor force despite social pressure to remain at home, and all of the "mothers" on these shows were career women, after all. The actors who played Robert Young's kids in "Father Knows Best" were all from single-parent homes and thought of Young like a father. Nothing is ever what you think it was when it came to the 1950s. It wasn't a good era at all for women and racial minorities.

Check out the "Remembering Ricky" retrospective on KZbin, which contains a lot of very interesting information. With all due respect to the memory of Pres. & Mrs. Eisenhower, for many of us The Nelsons were America's real First Family. Also, as a 73 y.o. looking back, the 50's were an ideal time in the history of America in the 20th century. To be sure it wasn't perfect, and some people can find something wrong with ANYTHING if they try hard enough, but I remember it as a time when everyone seemed to get along pretty well. It was an entirely different world from the America that we are living through at present.

Maybe better than any others, the Nelsons were popular being more plain than extreme. That they made the enjoyment of each other in everyday ways with an undercurrent of mutual love sadly bores people now.
