I had the pleasure of driving Jay Z for 3 days in 2010. On the first day, He asked me what was up with detroit, and I told him Detroit had been down a long road, but she will be okay because she's got a lot of heart, and I went on for a couple minutes. The next day at the concert at Comerica he told 65,000 people word for word what I had said. He did it again the next day. His mind is like a steel trap.

Dr. Dre said Eminem did the very same thing. He invited Eminem over and played a beat and Eminem just started with "Hi👋🏻 My name is.." and just pretty much did that whole song on the spot and it was a major hit. Literally his very first impression he ever made on Dr. Dre.

That is true, but that doesn't change the fact that a majority of Em's stuff are writtens. It takes nothing away from him, just exposes how much of a beautiful mad man that he is. Jay on the other hand was always selling, so he never had time to have a pencil and paper on deck. He always had to have his eyes open, so he would always have to make his bars in the mind then commit them all to memory as best as possible. I mean, now he can write whatever he wants, but why fix what isn't broke?

Jay-Z is on a whole different planet than Wayne. The majority of people just don’t understand what Jay is doing in his bars most of the time. Wayne comes up with some slick lines but Jay literally is speaking in double and triple entendres all the time. Guru even broke it down for people who don’t get it: Jay will say one thing and be speaking to 3 different groups of people, some who will only get the lyrics if they were physically around him.

It's actually pretty similar based on Jay's explanation. He has said that he started memorizing his rhymes because he was thinking of them while he was doing other things, namely hustling. He wasn't in a position to write them down so he did all his writing in his head. Like Em, he is constantly writing and then pulling it together when it's time to record. His notebook is just in his brain.

The ghetto side of my family would say that Satan is whispering those rhymes and Jay-Z's ears in real-time... OR the Illuminati made him memorize a bunch of bars ahead of time! Funny they all got their third eyes wide open and still can't find rent! 🤔

Just think of your favorite song and how many times you’ve listened to it. That’s about how much an artist listens to each of their songs before releasing it, pretty hard to forget at that point

Lil Wayne, who records similarly to Jay Z, has to learn his lyrics before he performs live. I'm sure he has some memorized but his catalog is insane. There are clips of him not remembering lyrics he said.

They don't. Each concert or show there is a set of songs they will do. leading up to that concert they will relisten their songs and learn it so they can perform but I bet if you saw them on the road randomly and asked them to recite a verse from one of their lesser hits they probably couldn't do it unless it's one of their personal favorites

I'm a graffiti artist. There is a reason graffiti is one of the 4 elements of hip hop. What Rick is describing is no different for a graffiti artist who understands the craft. Freestyle IS what separates the wheat from the chaff. You can't fake it in the moment, everyone sees your talent or lack of with zero filters.

That’s one thing that will always astound me about Jay Z, while I’d say Eminem is definitely a better lyricist it’s not by any huge margin but Eminem writes these rhymes out all day long, Jay literally just thinks about it for half an hour and has it all in his head, spits it and job done. I’m sure I could write a half decent rap song if you gave me a week or two but if you asked me to remember the full song in my head and write it entirely in my head I’d produce something worse than Lil Xan lmao.
