The reason why SOAD is great is because no one has ever sounded like them before, or since. They truly stand alone. And not because they were trying to be avant garde or different, but because they were true originals.

Two objective reasons. Rhythmical variety and structure far ahead of anyone in their genre. Remarkable unity achieved by using the vocals to connect the song parts, far more advanced than the typical solutions used in their genre.

I found SOAD’s “steal this album” on the side of the road in my hometown, thought it was a burnt CD or something, took it home and put it in my boombox, became a huge fan. They blew my mind and I was maybe 10 years old, still regard them as my top 3 bands to this day. And anyone I’ve ever talked to about, they either love em or hate em… I think they are one of the most unique and amazing bands ever and Rubin is spot on.

Fun fact that title was given because the album had several tracks leaked during the Napster Kazaa Limewire days. The chop suey 2001 disaster turned blessing that happened in Hollywood on sep 3rd. That led to a crowd 2-3x the size they had anticipated which got it shut down before they went on creating riots that destroyed 30k of their tour equipment... Following day, the album drops like STEAL THIS SUCKKAZ LOL went multi platinum. Unfortunately they postponed the album launch cuz of 9/11

Mybe the finest expressions in words a band can get.

I remember having the exact same reaction hearing them on the radio for the first time. The DJ at KISW in Seattle (late 90's), played an advance release of a single three times in a row because he loved it so much. THOSE DAYS ARE GONE!!! Corporate rock & classic rock as far as the ear can hear.

Rick doesn't just record a band he pushes them hard until he gets the very best from them. His input was critical to Beasties and System.Well all the bands he's worked with but they my 2 favourite's.

Just jokes btw- this man is a musical genius. He could be a brain in a tank for all I care as long as he kept producing albums.

I remember I showed my cousin System of a Down back in the day and she always brings up that weird band I showed her, they pretty mainstream now but in middle school they opened my eyes musically
