System of a Down quickly rose to fame in the early 2000s, but an internal creative differences dispute among bandmates has prevented new music from the band for more than a decade.

Darren took over the most of it, he wanted rock and roll content while clearly Serj wanted to change for a less "metal" music, basically Serj did it for the friendship and it turned out very successful more than he ever expected, even with all that he decided to step off, sadly
@kristygalbavy5253

Not clashing, they wrote & harmonized beautifully together & that's what brought them together in the first place. Someone just got a bigger head then the rest and thinks he needs to control, write, make more money then the rest, and even do more lead singing. That's the ultimate problem, hopefully one day he will realize thats not cool. Serj has a much better vocal range anyway, still to this day.

Agreed. If they want to release solo music then so be it. When you look at their projects you get to see their influence on the 5 albums. And man I became a much bigger fan of daron when he went on, to me his rock continued to evolve while serj did other stuff, which shows how different he can get years apart. Shavo is a fantastic editor and producer, and John, well I'm glad he's teaching a drum class after he was done with scars on broadway, I think passing on his style is great considering there are alot of drummers who just get hammered and smash the set while he was always on note, rhythm and never messes up live haha

I met these guys in early 2000 at a Rock of Ages record store, signing posters and stuff. This was right before they blew up and became huge. I attended a show later that night at Harpo's (SOAD, Fear Factory, Zak Wilde) and I remember smoking a cigarette outside in the parking lot next to their tour bus and the drummer was inside, alone. I talked to him for a few minutes through a small window on the bus and I asked him why he was by himself and he said that Detroit scared the shit out of him and he didn't feel safe leaving the tour bus.

I'm fairly content with SOAD not putting out a new album tbh. They have a flawless discography already that we can all listen to and appreciate over and over again, perfect songs from a perfect era of their creativity as artists. I would not want them to put out a reunion album in 2020 and it be vastly different from their original sound. They have grown as artists doing their own thing, and i say just let it be. Even Tool not releasing an album for so many years is not so upsetting either. They gave us masterpiece quality albums years ago, and it's alright if they've moved on in their vision.
@meowtherainbowx4163
@meowtherainbowx4163 5 жыл бұрын
I feel like if they force themselves to make an album, it will be a lot more forgettable. They’ve already lost a lot of mainstream appeal just by virtue of being inactive for so long and coming from an era when alt-metal was really popular. Also, it will divide fans because it will probably sound quite different. Bands like SOAD succeeded because they were fresh and unique, but now everyone has certain expectations of them, and many will inevitably be displeased. Furthermore, if they don’t even really want to make this album with all this BS going on, they’re not going to write their best material. If they were slightly more able to compromise on an album, it might be worth it, but let’s not act like it would have been a huge tour-de-force like _Toxicity_ was. It would have probably just pleased half of the fans and not many others.

+Derrick Swinney I don’t understand why people say that. It sounded like they went in some great new directions while still keeping the vital elements that made them great. Serj may not have liked making them very much, but that didn’t show in his killer performances. All the instrumentalists killed it, and Daron was excellent at writing killer riffs. I don’t know what was missing.

Suffice it to say, they played a lot of SOAD and I remember thinking this was pretty damn good stuff. To this day, I have several of their songs on my MP3 player and love to jam on them while working out. I also listen to them in my car, often! Serj is right. Even though in most bands I've been in, I have written more than half the music myself, so I stand only to lose by my upcoming argument; it is wrong to assume that it wasn't that bass line, or that drum part that is what really hooked people into the song, and why it was a such a success. But no, they give all the credit to whoever wrote the lyrics, chord structure and melody, and to hell with all the other parts that are often even more of the songs success. Let alone the performance of the musician who played the part on the record. Sometimes that is even the producer or engineer. But all too often all the credit goes to the _"writer"_ only, even though other _"wrote"_ their own parts. In most bands the drummer comes up with the drum part, the bassist _"writes"_ the bass part and so on. Seriously, even for you guitarists (like me), should you not get paid for coming up with a good solo? As Serj says, equal publishing split. Or at least reflect *all* of the work people put into a record, not *just certain elements.*

Aylbdr Madison Well said! I’ve been in the same position for years, it’s a bit of a dual edged sword, as a songwriter it’s hard to give up pieces of your creation, but as you said, it’s often those additional parts which make your song really come alive, and deserve to be credited. I did it for my first two albums, but with a revolving door of musicians it became a logistical nightmare to deal with, and so after that although I still retained the band name, I no longer had band members and had all the guys as hired players who got paid session fees and an equal share of live performance returns... but with no long term ownership to any of the songs.... it’s worked well, but by that same token, we were only ever moderately successful so never had the ‘big’ money issues to deal with or fight over. I’m fairly sure that my hired guns actually made more out of the deal than I have hahaha.

Releasing an album after so many years is a lose/lose situation for most bands but especially hugely popular bands (unless it’s only about the money). Better to be remembered for your greatness. I think this applies most of all to Soad since it’s obvious their hearts aren’t really in it anymore.

These guys hit the perfect combination of talent, sound, style and most importantly, TIMING when they went big. It all aligned so perfectly with the way rock was evolving and what people were hungry to hear. They became huge in that short-lived weird spot in the 90s where you have multiple different types of rock all competing for which one would be dominant" Nu-Metal, Punk was causing waves again, grunge was beginning to peter out, and System came along with this absolutely bizarre mash-up of all of these sounds with strong social commentary and a political message to boot. It was almost like destiny for them to be a global phenomenon. I've always been saddened by the way that they just kind of dissipated. I still believe that if all parties were motivated enough, we could have got a couple more really solid, classic albums out of System before they all agreed to hang it up for good. Such amazing talent from every single member, there was no dead weight in that band.

I’m so goddamn happy that I was able to see SOAD last October in Fresno of all places. I was 10 years old when SOAD released their last album so I never really got the chance to see them live.

SOAD will be epic forever, no matter what they do. I've grown up on them, and have my 5 CDs..., I'm good as long as I can replace them if needed. They drop a new CD... It'll be my 6th. Who daphuck wouldn't love THAT sound?!!

System of a down has always had a special place in my heart. And always will have. Their songs never gets old and I can only dream of going to see them live some day. I really love their music. It means very much to me. My mom showed me them when I was a kid, and I LOVED it! Still does, will always do. I want to tell them how much they mean to me. But, that will never happen... I'm not that lucky....

Bands are a complexity of relationships. I LOVE SOAD. If the band of brothers has to go their separate ways in order to preserve their brotherhood, then so be it. I applaud this decision, as well as their unshakable grasp on the love and respect they have for each other. Maybe t6heir individual paths will come full circle and bring them back to the studio as SOAD in the future.

SOAD just released two new songs, but, as the legend they become, I don´t know if a new album could keep the hype it had. They are a legend band and they should remain as it is!

I remember playing on a bill with these guys back in the early 90s. My guitarist was also Armenian so there was some Armenian bonding going on. Haha. I remember thinking how quirky yet enjoyable their music was. Nothing bad to say about them. They were really nice dudes. It seems like everyone we played with back in those days got a record deal and became famous to one degree or other. All except for us (weeps silently). System of a Down, Hole, Stabbing Westward, Greta, Red Kross, Mercury Rev, Alice in Chains, Candlebox. What are you gonna do?

First video I've seen from this channel. The narrator sounds like he is reading a script that he doesn't understand - pauses in unusual places, reading words incorrectly which changes the meaning of the sentences etc. And from what I've seen below, this is basically just a poor reading of Wikipedia

I am always amazed at the way income is divided among band members. It seems to be guaranteed to cause bands to break up over time, when one or two band members get more income from songwriting and publishing, and the drummer, bassist, second lead, etc just get what amounts to wages. Like it or not, when band income is unequally divided it causes friction and resentment, with those left oout demanding the financial percs of songwriting and publishing, while the favorite few get richer and richer and more likey to promote only their own songs. Eventually lawsuits follow, when the less well paid band members want a better shake, or maybe just want the fair share they were expecting when they joined. The Eagles are the poster child for this type of member breakups, with two guys gradually becoming the core of the band to the detriment of everyone else. Then amazing talents like Joe Walsh are left basically working for wages - good wages, but still, the creative artist did not get into music to work 9-5 at a music store for twenty bucks an hour. For me, though, anyone that hails KISS as their musical heroes is a bit whack-o to say the least. There is no better example of the two-owner, hired hands type of band than KISS, and they owning duo will freely admit it. I do not think that is good for music, to keep band members on the road month after month with nothing to show for it except glorified studio wages. Does anyone really get into music to be at the beck and call of one or two top dogs in a band, always walking on eggshells because any riff they play could be their last with that band.?

They hit a great nerve for a few albums. I hope they do bring out some new music. However if they dont, they will go down as one of the best. Im just happy they're still friends. Too many times the friendship fails, then the band.
