Thank you for all the inspiration you have given both myself and my wife. I started vertical growing in a small garden and have progressed myself from there just as you did. Your allotment show shall be dearly missed and we do wish you all the best for the future with any projects you have or may do. "Raising a cup of tea too you"

I agree with your decision to let the allotment go. You are at a stage in your life where something has to give. I am fortunate enough to have a kitchen garden just outside my kitchen door. I don't have to drive anywhere, and my watering is on an automatic watering system. All my beds are raise, but I knew 10+ years ago that my back and hips were going to give me major issues, so I built and planned accordingly. Things don't always go as planned, and I still need help with my garden in the spring and in the fall. I am blessed to have a wonderful daughter-in-law that helps me out. I think it is easier if you have someone to help, but not everyone has that, and a garden is a lot of work. You have inspired me and other gardeners to look at doing things differently. I look forward to your other videos, when you sit and just chat, or take us on an adventure once in awhile. God Bless and take care of yourself, you only live once.

Took me a long time to come watch this, was hearing the news from other allotment channels and was afraid I'd cry, as you and Dan were the impetus for my returning love of gardening and I'm so sad to see you go. That said, I'll watch any project you decide to film Rick. I enjoyed the van and kitchen projects so much and your vacation tours. So, even if you're not gardening, I hope you'll pop in for a waffle every now and again. Thanks so much for all the time you put in for our entertainment. Cheers -Lisa

Forgive me Rick for commenting twice but I wanted to thank you for some of the wonderful memories I have from your Allotment videos. I remember the creative cane pergola you made for your beans. The discussion with Sean over which way do beans spiral. The novel use of the paddle pool growing beds. The mystery grape vine. And your beautifully constructed growing shed. And of course the essential cups of tea. As you always wished your subscribers I wish you many more " great days. "

Very well done Rick. I know it's hard giving up on something you've put your heart into, but better that, than having a once loved project turn into a soul sapping chore. I have seen about 99% of people here (I live in the middle of France) start their veggie plots full of excitement and dreams, only to give up after a year or two because THE WEEDS WON! I have yet to start my veg garden, but it's people like you who are helping me to prepare. I have really enjoyed your series, but especially the building and weed control measures. Don't feel sad, be proud that you gave it a go. Good luck in your new ventures.

The most important skill I think you can learn in life is knowing when to quit. No one preaches it. No one acknowledges it. It's hard to find quotes from Winston Churchill, or Abraham Lincoln encouraging us to do it. We don't like to talk about it, but it is unbelievably important. They don't make movies about people that wasted huge amounts of time on something they knew in their hearts was done. Good for you Rick! On to your next adventure.

You have voiced it perfectly Tom. My comments have upset you because of the negative connotations with quitting. "Nobody likes a quitter". So you have chosen the most extreme ridiculous argument possible. Perhaps the truth lies somewhere in between? Or dare I say, much closer to what I previously stated.

7:44: And here we see why the story of western civilization is a nearly unbroken story of trying to move away from the land. While it is comforting to know that one is self sufficient in growing one's own food, the time commitment and the fact that one is at the mercy of the seasons, the weather, and the elements in general, make it a very time consuming proposition. That said, I have really enjoyed these allotment videos of yours, RIck. You did a fantastic job, and, like you, I was always more interested in how you solved the various and sundry problems you encountered than what you actually grew. All the best on your future endeavours and I look forward to what you'll be putting up next.

I'm kind of sad that the allotment series has ended because it has seen me through the worst winter storms I've ever seen. I've seriously changed the way I garden, perhaps because of watching your channel, perhaps because of the drastic change in climate, in Canada, or perhaps of the move I made a year ago. The biggest change would be taking your ideas and applying them to winter indoor vegetable gardening, something I didn't think could be done without a lot of expensive lightning. But I've found a measure of success. Thanks for your time and energy..., your videos will stay in my thoughts for a long time to come. I wish you all the best in the future and I'm sure I'll be back to see what new hobby you pick up. Wynn

Thank you for all you have shared...I've been watching for three years and always enjoy what's going on in Rick World. I am trying not to be too sad about your decision to not renew the allotment...must admit I am a bit. But I am reminded of a song about seasons turning...and this is just one more turn. I hope to see you out and about maybe in some travel or camping videos. You are looking really well, the healthiest in 3 years I think, so I am sure whatever your next adventure is, it will be terrific. Before we go let me thank you for a tip you gave about an action camera (SJ4000) in your equipment video. ..I actually bought one, took it to the shark petting tank at the Aquarium of the Pacific a few days ago and what a blast!! You simply cannot imagine how just sharing your life has made such a positive impact on someone on the other side of the planet...Thank you!

Well it's sad that you're giving up the allotment but I agree with you that the things you were best at were construction and problem solving rather than the actual growing! You have to be honest with yourself and you've made the right decision. Allotments do tie you down and they need constant attention. It's amazing that you got something to harvest after 2 months of neglect! Don't peel the potatoes, just scrub them! All the best in your future endeavours Rick. Love from Roz in sodden Lancashire.

I've missed our outings, and the gorgeous views you always give us. I'm so glad you left the allotment, I would never want you to do something, that's not in your heart to do. Sheila6325 Indeed! Rick is a good guy. But the world is crazy and he's smart enough to know growing plants in UK is not going to save man nor soul from what's coming. I didn't mean to come out with so much diatribe but it flowed like the river of Babylon. Where we cried!

Personally I think this world is headed for some serious destruction. I don't believe growing plants are going to save any man or soul either, and I sure didn't think bad of anything you said. I just enjoy hearing whatever people have to say. Right or wrong, no matter to me. We all have our views. I think the economy will crash in September. Many don't, many thing of me as nuts because I "prep" That is, until I got enough food saved to go a full month without having to buy groceries, and got to spend over $1000.00 on my self, and not have to use a credit card. I like it!!! So tell me, what do you think about this world we live in? Curious. Bless, Sheila

Sorry to see that you've decided to give up the allotment, I've watched all the vids since I found your channel late last year. Both you and Sean are two people that helped me decide to give allotmenteering a go. I felt I learned a lot following your ups and downs with the plot, you will have undoubtedly helped many more. Good luck with whatever you decide to do in the future. What with Sean taking a back step and you deciding to stop there are going to be some gaps in my youtube viewing! Having had an allotment from January this year, and spending nearly all my free time there this year just to get it into to shape, let alone filming the process, I appreciate how difficult the decision must have been.

I've watched all the allotment vids from the very first one, so its a bit of a sad ending for me, as I (and many others), felt like we knew every inch of that plot. There's been fun and learning times, but I agree, if the enthusiasm has gone then its time to call it a day and find something else to spark your interest. I think I kind of guessed this video wa coming to be honest. Thanks for all the info and allotment vids, they got me thru some boring afternoons at work! Hope to join you on your next adventure! The first video I ever saw of yours, the one that 'drew me in' was one where you'd stopped your bike at the side of a road to talk enthusiastically about a wild plant that had medicinal properties & i'm really into that kind of thing. A few days later you'd taken on an allotment, and I carried on watching because I too, have an allotment. But something I never could understand Rick, was that you adopted a method of allotmenting that is quite... standard....The kind of approach that most people who are new to growing advise each other to do... Y'know, getting the rotavator out ("Eek... you'll multiply those weeds" I cried), putting in beds to make everything orderly, adopting weed membrane when the rotavation took its effect & the weeds went doolally... It's an approach where you're constantly battling nature... trying to keep it under control rather than working with it. Something that most gardeners try (and fail) to do, at some point... apart from those old boys who spend every waking minute tending marrows and hoeing. I never could resolve in my mind, the man who wrestled to tame his plot, with the man raving about selfheal. They seemed at odds with each other. If I may say, I just think you took entirely the wrong approach, one that was maybe not in line with your own nature. There's other methods of growing that don't require quite the amount of graft, or militant watering, or constant weeding - ones that work WITH nature rather than against. People like Ruth Stout who pioneered using mulching methods, to mimic nature - she gardened well into her 90s - she never had to sweat over growing the way you have, and she had a bountiful growing space. The Back To Eden film uses similar ideas with woodchip. And Hugelkuture. There's the Charles Dowding No Dig method. Then there's permaculture... All these exciting ways to grow that are not necessarily a drain on time or effort... and in some ways are more natural and less stressful... and some of which that would lend themselves rather well to growing medicinal herbs, especially those rarer kinds found in hedges and roadsides ;-) Just my thoughts. It might not be the allotment or growing that you've lost interest in, but the methods you're using.

Surprised that at a point where large amounts of money aren't required to be poured in you'd walk away. Especially when now is when you make your money back. For me getting in the garden is relaxing. Even back in high school doing agriculture we only got on our plots twice a week. Admittedly the watering was taken care of. Where I am on the side of a hill I'm having to deal with a lot of rock and rubble and physical fitness becomes an issue. I did the spuds in tyres and for the money I put into it in the way of soil and compost I got nothing. But now I'm using that mix for my chillies. *shrug* if they'd been the only thing I was growing I'd have given up but I'm trying to repurpose stuff. Sigh. Good luck with the next venture.

It is sad to see you give up the allotment, I am not sure how I found your videos as I am into woodwork and when I saw your videos I enjoyed your presentation so carried on watching your you tube page. I am sure you will soon find another hobby and wish you luck on that. I will continue to watch your videos as it is the way you do them that I enjoy. Good luck for the years to come.

I believe you hit the nail on the head, as they say. You are a problem solver, and a project doer. I know the feeling. You enjoy working out how things should happen, fixing the issues, but when it is all said and done, you are not a long term "farmer" or caretaker. You are too much of a creator. I know you have a curious mind, and shall hopefully take us along on your next 'Rickworld' adventure. I do look forward to it. I shall miss the allotment, a bit, but as others have said, you shouldn't carry on with something you just have no love or passion for anymore. Thanks for all the wonderful videos and your honesty. Lorie

Thanks Rick your allotment videos have been very entertaining, but at your plot the weeds seem to be really stubborn, so much more work keeping the weeds away than mine and others plots. Can't wait to see more adventures in the van!

A video like this must be so hard to put together. How to express all the thoughts, emotions and reasons in one's head to others knowing that they are engaged (from afar) and affected. You did a great job sharing this with us and the video editing was superb. It felt like a well done documentary. Best wishes in your next project. You are so talented.

Well, dangit. I've been watching your allotment vids (and recently your campervan vids) periodically for a few years. I hope you find a new challenge or adventure to share, as I think many of us are fans because of all the engineering, problem solving, and creativity that you put into your hobbies. I get it, though. Gardening is a brutal task master and when you're done, you're done. Thanks for the excellent resource you've created for us.

As a recent subscriber, I was getting very inspired by your videos, and am sad to see that you have stopped doing your allotment channel. No doubt you have made the right decision for yourself, and I wish you well in whatever else you do. I am sure that, like myself, many of your fans have started at Video number one, and watched them (in my case over several days) through to this one, and have shared your journey. All the best, Jim

Yup...see you on your next video. I am glad you have chosen to follow another path ... when anything just becomes a chore & one that you don't really want to do it is best to be honest with yourself and walk away. I think that is a brave thing to do. Think of all the possibilities you have now!!

Good Luck Rick in what ever your new project is! I will definitely stay watching with interest! can I just perhaps make a small suggestion! as you have worked so hard on your allotment, why don't you re-plant your fruit bushes into large pots so as you can take them home with you and stand in your garden also we transplanted our strawberries into them long pots that look like window boxes and sat them onto brackets on the garden wall, so we could lift them off and put in doors or into a greenhouse ( we only have a small plastic one ) in winter! this way you don't have all the work as you do on an allotment they only need a little care, but you reap the benefit of all the fruit, as it would be a shame to lose them! anyway once again Good Luck and we will be looking forward to your next video! Elaine and John.

I only just discovered your allotment series a few days ago, but I love it, and I'm glad I still have a lot of episodes to go until I get to this one... ;-) Is this a typical allotment? Because we have a similar thing in Germany, but it's also quite different The allotments here can be the size of yours up to ten times that size, but they always have fences or hedges in between them, and everybody has a cabin on the allotment (with bed/kitchen/toilet...). The original idea was to give people some space to plant food, but nowadays a lot of it is often lawn and flowers with only smaller patches of veggies, if that. Many people see it more as weekend homes, a place for having barbecues. I would love to have one (I'd love to grow potatoes), but the waiting lists are really long...Good luck with future endeavours.

You are brave to make this decision--when it fails to bring joy, a clean break is the right decision. It doesn't stop you from trying again if the mojo comes back (or for that matter doing small scale growing in your back garden). A little editorial comment--I don't think the sad music at the end will be quite right in the long run. A break with what pulls you down means that great things will be coming, but you won't ever forget the beauty of what you had created. I think when you get on to that next thing, you'll realize that the music should be cheery and energizing, the kind that gets you waking up early in the morning and start jazzing with life!

rickvanman Hey buddy, I know in my heart you've made the right decision. I sensed it some time ago and have just been waiting for you to make this video. Now you've fully accepted it in your own mind and are able to move on. I look forward to seeing what new adventures you take us on.. Ever fancied building a garden railway? That might satisfy the hands on creative side of you and make for some really interesting videos! Whatever you decide, I was with you a long time before the allotment and will be staying with you for a very long time after... as long as you keep making the videos, and longer if I can! When you first started the allotment series I really worried that I was going to lose interest in the channel. I never thought it would be as interesting as you managed to make it and I found myself looking forward to each episode. I'm glad I was able to visit you and the allotment earlier this year. I hope I can visit you again to catch up on your next crazy scheme! :-) Take care buddy, I can't wait to see where this channel goes next.

Rick, I am sad to see the end of the allotment. I wonder, maybe you wouldn't have gotten burned out if you had an allotment half the size? It's definitely a lot of work when you have a lot of beds to tend to. I increased the size of my garden this year, and I also find that I'm spending all of my free time tending to the garden, but I'm ok with that. I wish you luck in whatever future activities you decide to partake in.

As Sean says - you prepared the ground for a very high standard in allotment filming on youtube. If you add in your years of container and hydroponic gardening before the allotment - why that's close to a decade of gardening (more?) it is no wonder you would like to do something else. Wishing you all the best - ever a viewer and subscriber (no matter what) Annie
