My piano a Conway Boston with a Simplex player sits in the corner of my dining room waiting for me to restore it. I had it tuned about 7 years ago and its holding it well...could use a touch up. But it sounds just like this with a bit less sustain. (I suspect this ones is malfunctioning a bit) I have been struggling with the idea of deep restoration because I didn't want to loose that old saloon sound as he puts it.

You guys didn't understand, it's not the deal of the century because since it's a rotten piano you have to retune it and it's not even sure if its structure holds or its strings. In other words, you pay $75 for a piano to buy a new one.

@yacine_scherzo5 жыл бұрын
@lone beast Not at all because no one will buy an old piano since you are a pianist/or play piano frequently. There are plenty of pianos like this one for the same price (and betters) on the piano market, and people don't buy them because they know the truth behind the price in general. I can't disagree with the fact that this old piano sounds really cool, but i wouldn't buy it for practicing or else, and i'm sure 0 people who know what is like to have a piano will buy it.

Perfect for Boogie-woogie. My grandfather was a London Piano Plinth Fitter, adjusting the iron casting around which pianos like this were built in a cottage industry: The piano was trundled from hiuse to house for various parts to be fitted, and the tuner (often a blind man) at the other end rolled out the finished product. Every pub had one in its saloon bar, giving Cockney music its distinctive sound, and many people aspired to have one in their drawing-room too. The cottage industry - and that sound - ended abruptly in London after 1911. German manufacturers built pianos on production lines which assured their quality and stability of tuning. My Grandpa's career as a craftsman was over, and he joined the Royal Navy - but a decade later he met my Grandmother over a piano, and the rest is family history.

The best known piano tuner in my home city was a blind man named Corky. He also bought old uprights like this and converted them into player pianos. Our old Shakey's Pizza had one and several othe places around town. Your post reminded me of him.

@@johnchandler1687 Glad to be of service. Sadly, our Saloons (a nicer room than the public bar in the same premises, carpeted, with cushioned seats and ladies could be and men were not allowed in their work clothes nor allowed to smoke) are all gone. No longer is the popularity of an English pub instantly discernable from the density of strata of smoke lingering in its public bar (or the stickiness of its bare boards). And no longer is the foid confined to a pork pie with English mustard, or a grease-proof paper packet of crisps with salt in a twist of blue paper. Pubs are strangely much better but less social.

@@hunterculp2385 - I think you have been watching too many episodes of the TV show The Rifleman that was supposed to have occurred in the 1870's, but Lucas McCain had a 1892 Winchester. The 1851 Colt Navy, 1860 Colt Army and the 1861 Colt Navy were all cap and ball revolvers. The Colt "Peacemaker" (Single Action Army) cartridge revolver came out in 1873 and not everyone had one immediately. So where did these people get their guns from? Did Marty McFly bring the guns to them?

Here's an example of a 1915 piano that has been beautifully restored to intentionally have the saloon sound. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jYOyh5yjepKcrpo Normally, the "saloon" sound means the piano needs a ton of repairs. It comes from, not only being out of tune, but also from the sound of the hammers and dampers. Saloon pianos rarely saw a tuner, and were played alot, resulting in the hammers getting hard, which gives the piano that metallic like , sharp attack. Now days, a piano can be restored and they will purposely harden the hammers, and detune the treble section, but the detuning is not random, but is detuned evenly across the piano.

Especially true in our current era of overly-slick and auto-tuned performances that have no human qualities left. Listening to older recordings is like a breath of fresh air.

3:42 is the best part, it just gives you that feeling that you're in an old timey saloon, hearing someone playing on the rickety piano, you decide to show your girl some piano skills of your own. Once you press those keys, the whole place lights up like spark plugs in engine. Truly a masterpiece the boogie woogie is.

Wild West saloons wouldn’t have boogie woogie. Boogie woogie only made an appearance toward the end of the West, and even then, it wasn’t popularized until the 20’s. :(
