Massive fan of this guy back in the late 90s. I didn't know he was still doing things. I thought he was an electronic musician for a bit and then faded away. I've actually still been hearing his music in movies and didn't realize it. His Junkie XL stuff with Rudeboy from Urban Dance Squad was some of my favorite stuff back then. Melange, Billy Club, Roster... those songs were blowing my old Nissan up back then.

You might want to set your camera to manual focus, so the camera is not constantly hunting for its focus point. I had to stop looking at the video and just listen to the audio because that was distracting. Great interview, btw.

yep, always use manual focus on videos like that, especially when the thing the camera will eventually focus on is 20 feet behind you gents. They always focus on the thing in the middle of the screen.

It's almost as though the camera was naturally conflicted as to what to focus on - the two absolutely great guys in the fore, or the sheer awesomeness of the modular walls on display behind them. I mean, to be honest my brain was doing exactly the same thing :D Great interview!

Thuis is so great! I remember seeing Tom with his band 'Weekend at Waikiki' at the OJC Staddijk, Nijmegen in the Netherlands. That was a long time ago (mid eighties I guess?). I still remember that concert and I went to see two or three concert each week and I forgot most of them, but not Weekend at Waikiki. So why do I remember that gig? I mean, I remember I thought it was great (even though I don't remember the music itself), I remember the name of the band (very important if you want a career) and I remember I had a wonderful evening and I really enjoyed myself. Now, Tom Holkenborg is a very clever man. He is now and he was back then. What he did was quite simple. He just made sure I would never forget that gig, because he and his band changed the whole place. They used fake plants and camo nets and other stuff. Every band I saw there played on that same stage, under the same lights, in the same room. Tom and his friends changed all that, so I remember it even to this day. I still use this story to tell young bands that they don't need thousands of euro's to be recognised. Again, I've seen many young bands, plenty of them were pretty good, but I forgot everything about it. I can't remember the songs of Tom's band, but atleast I remember it was good, I remember I had a wonderful time and, most importantly, I still remember the name of the band. And all because of such a simple Idea. When Tom did his remix (?) of Elvis' 'A little less conversation', I thought that was great and I was truely proud of him. And now, with his film music, and not the dumbest movies either, in a very difficult world with a lot of competition...., man, that amazes me! The guy of Weekend at Waikiki.... I've had my dreams back then. Tom worked hard to live my dreams. He deserves it! Thank you for the great interview, Rick!

Great interview, and as a huge fan of Blade Runner I have to agree with Junkie. Slight mistake though: James Bernard (Dracula) was born in 1925 and passed away in 2001. In the electronic only film score genre, there's the quite visionary (for its time, 1956) and very avantgarde Forbidden Planet ;-)

James Bernard was the Dracula composer, and he had a long career after Dracula. He created many classic British film scores from the late 50s into the mid 70s, then made something of a comeback in his final years as a new generation discovered him. He's one of my favorite composers.

He's been upping his game lately. I wasn't a fan of his DC movies soundtracks (too much droning noise) but since Fury Road and lately, Mortal Engines and Battle Angle Alita, he's been crafting themes and memorable melodies channeling James Horner at times, he's going to be a Hollywood soundtrack composer in demand as he can sound classic and modern.

Im not sure the analogue revival is as recent as a lot of people think. Back in the 90s analogue synths where already back in vogue because people found the digital style "workstation" synths and the FM synths (which might as well have been digital since they involved a LOT of menu diving) sterile and uncreative, whereas the analogues had those magical filter knobs that gave those expressive sweeps popular in techno at the time. Aphex Twins Analogue Bubblebath really was where the whole movement started with Analogue and it never really went away. That was 1991, btw. That said back in the 90s there was still a LOT of analogue synths available on the second hand market. I picked up a Juno for about $200 and my trusty old Korg Polysynth (admittedly bit of a menu diver keyboard) for under $100

I was absolutely floored by this video. Thank you so much for doing it. I had a huge argument with my son because he said that he didn't need to graduate from high school because he had KZbin. I went ballistic but didn't Mr. Holkenborg just validate that in a sense? Thank God he did graduate and maybe because my interests are varied, KZbin stuff finds me... a lot of stuff finds me. Interesting amazing stuff... Honestly, I could go to school on KZbin. Seriously. A friend of mine who's a doctor told me that when she has to do a surgical procedure that she hasn't done in a long time, she finds the procedure on KZbin! Damn... For me it was the last concert Jobim did in Brazil with Jazz artists from America. I think Herbie Hancock and Joe Henderson were there. One of my favorite songs in Life is Girl From Ipanema. Growing Up, it introduced me to Brazilian music. That and Brasil ’66. Anyway during the concert they’re playing an Instrumental Girl From Ipanema and Jobim walks over to Herbie on the piano and plays, the chords to Take the A Train! That was his inspiration for Girl From Ipanema! To me, it was a validation for growing up in the tradition. Watching you guys talk, I felt like I was sitting in the room with you. And Rick, I don’t even know how I got wind of you but I’ve learned a lot already. I’m a couple of years away from retirement. I think I want to follow in the Junkie XL lifestyle. Right now, as soon as I have a vacation, I switch from working from 9-5p to composing from 9p-5a! So now, I have to subscribe to Junkie XL. No Sleep…

GREAT INTERVIEW! The nightmare scenario would have been that the camera was focused on you guys for the first 2 minutes, and then it might have re-focused on the background for the rest of the interview. This would have left the entire interview completely out of focus. You got lucky . . . . The solution is to put the video camera in Manual focus so it stays locked on the subjects. Also, using a high F stop number would have allowed the background to be in sharp focus too. In this case, the background would be nice to be in sharp focus. Consider using lav microphones on each person, routing each mic to its own channel on the camera. This will yield cleaner and more present audio, without so much room sound, that can be better processed later. Loved this interview!!!
