The point at 22:30 into this interview is WHY artists WANT to participate in these interviews and WHY we want to watch. Rick describes a voicing of an FMaj chord with a open B and a G# note that normally wouldn't be thought of to play together, that would normally sound somewhat dissonant on most guitars unless PERFECTLY intonated and perfectly played... Then Julian remembers the song and the chord being referenced and reproduces it and talks about the care required to get those strings to ring with that level of clarity, from finger pressure to strumming... What other interviewer on the PLANET has the listening focus and knowledge to pick up on that and raise it in an interview and elicit such insightful information from the artist?

When my son was a talented 9th grader in the jazz guitar program at Oakland School for the Arts, Julian came to school and gave a master class. That changed my son's life! He was broadened, deepened, and absolutely launched! Thank you Julian, and thank you Rick for this great interview!

Fast forward a year, we go to see Julian and my son got to meet him after the show. I saw Julian this past December - attended a pre-concert master class - able to interact - he is an absolute gem of a person and really one of the best guitarists in the world. I saw it live - left me jawdropped --- wow, just wow (and his band is so good and worth seeing on their own). He's on a different level. Julian will be driving guitar playing both the basics and avant garde of playing into the future. If you haven't dug in, dig in - you will find something that speaks to you. Whether listening to his fascinating collaborations with Nels Cline, Bill Frisell, John Zorn, Fred Hersch, Gary Burton, etc. or his own work over the past two decades (...significant since he's only in his mid-thirties), I'm struck by the increasing depth of Julian's sound and width of his vision. In his music and practices, dichotomies such "forward vs. back", "tradition vs. innovation", and even "simplicity vs. complexity" begin to dissolve. Dividing lines between styles fade. The gestural and cerebral cooperate and inform each other rather than standing at a distance. Above all else, he is ceaselessly sincere. I not only enjoy Julian's music, but I respect his decisions and admire his ethic. I first saw Julian with The Nels Cline 4 about five years ago and became an instant fan of both of them. He is a joy to watch play, because not only is he a killer guitarist, but he visually enjoys playing, often with a great smile on his face, which he seems to be directing to either himself or some unseen force of inspiration. The playing at the end was absolutely awe inspiring. There’s a time and a place for seeing your typical shredder noodling away but the musicality, technique, harmonic content and intricacies of this type of playing really is spellbinding. He’s humble and has a willingness to show his view point that’s nice to see. He’s a legend already for a reason and every interview I read or watch he’s always gracious. He just absorbs music and expresses it in a way that’s just one step ahead of his contemporaries. He’s an artist I’d never want to learn his misc because he’s a guitarist that has his own voice. I love his music and I’m glad his band has continued.
