This type of “What makes this song great” is my favorite. I don’t listen to Seal. I don’t like pop music until Rick Beato gives me a reason to. This is so good. I’ve heard this song a billion times and I never actually listened to it until Rick showed me something in it that I never heard before. This is why I love you Rick Beato. There aren't as many people like Rick on YT because of the upside down laws and greed of publishers who punish people for being fans of the music they publish, to the point they don't understand that such educators like Rick actually extend the life of a song through their love of the song, thus making more money for the publishers. I was starting a career as a producer and sound engineer in studio. Then one day at the local tv news (I'm from Brasil) they said it was the debut of a song that will be in the next Batman movie, and they rolled a clip of scenes from the movie with Kiss From a Rose... Man... I can't describe what I felt, it was like some religious experience. I've listened to the whole song as nothing else was hapenning around me, it was magic. The next day I went a little early to the studio, just to shop for Seal's new cd. I've listened to that song for the first time in a acoustic treated room with a pair o nice monitors. Indeed. It happened to me too, this jazz guy friend of mine told me there was a wrong note on the melody, but when he corrected it he killed the song. Years later I got to know that that is called "Appoggiatura italiana". That "wrong" note is what creates the tension which once it gets released makes the song emotional impact explode. That technique is the basis of Adele's productions (that's how I got to know it). Without you kill her work.

I believe this is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. The guided tour Rick provides (with the individual tracks, what a gift to have) shows how much these creative works rely on being a team effort. Every role, whether in arranging, or writing, or performing, contributes to the end result. The right people at the right time with the right effort and the right material produce magic. Congrats and everyone's gratitude go to Seal, without whom there would be no song. It was said early on that he disliked performing this song, thinking it wasn't very good. I think he's grown to appreciate its importance to the general public as well as to he himself as a creative artist. For whom this song opened doors.

"Kiss from a Rose" was written in 1987, several years prior to the release of Seal's eponymous debut album from 1991. After writing the song, Seal felt "embarrassed by it" and "threw the tape in the corner". Seal did not present it to producer Trevor Horn until the recording sessions for Seal II. In 2015, Seal said of the song: "To be honest, I was never really that proud of it, though I like what Trevor did with the recording. He turned that tape from my corner into another 8 million record sales and my name became a household name".

I got to know this song as a kid because of the "Batman Forever" movie. As an 8 year old, this song just blew my mind!

Yep but "Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me" by U2 was the best cut on the soundtrack imo.

So did I! Also the U2 track, the one that made me fall in love with their music when I was 9.

The 90s was an amazing decade for "blockbuster ballads featured on movie soundtracks". Seal, Aerosmith, Celine Dion, etc

The vocal jumps remind me of how one might play a guitar or woodwind instrument, strumming the string and then lifting your finger to immediately transition from a high note to a lower note. Being able to transition between those notes with that speed and smoothness definitely highlights Seal's vocal talent.

Rick, you hit it out of the park with this one. My wife and I were, literally, crying during parts of it. It's a beautiful, rich song and it's so easy to miss some of that richness when only listening casually. The Seal - Trevor Horn dynamic was truly a match made in heaven and it shows up in all of Seal's work but especially in this song. Your technical genius combined with your child like enthusiasm and innocence, the sign of a true master, is a gift and pure pleasure to watch. Carry on!

I remember the first time I heard this song, I was completely blown away, because I couldn't believe a pop song could be so complex. I'm a classical and jazz musician and singer, and don't think much of pop, but THIS SONG!! How was it possible? So now, Rick, you're breaking it all down, the magic behind it, and to ask Seal....awesome! This is some of the greatest content on KZbin!
@caroljoy8392 жыл бұрын
His "ask" of Seal was the cherry on the top of his song exploration.

One genius calls another genius, and I get to listen in. "I couldn't play an instrument..." "an experiment to try and figure out how to work this machine... an afternoon's work..." As I listen, I continue to be amazed at the indescribable levels of genius here. I note that Seal did read the manual, although he probably didn't need to.

Obviously that first draft that was done in an afternoon was not "the song" we hear now. It would be interesting to hear that draft though. Probably vocals + rough keys and maybe percussion or something? This flashed out song def. took em a good bit longer :)

The saddest thing about this video is remembering how amazing music in general used to be in the 90's. It didn't matter the genre: rock, pop, R&B, hip hop, dance, to even easy listening, smooth jazz, opera, you name it.The 2000's really began the decline of music - especially pop music. Just compare "Kiss from a Rose" to any other song from recent years. It's depressing.
@scottmcgregor5623 жыл бұрын
Pete said it all. "Written by one person. Seal." Pop music from the 60s through the 90s was amazing and magical most of the time written by one or two people. (Occasionally the whole band when the chemistry was right. Many times from jamming. Remember jamming??)
@gilbertomorales44023 жыл бұрын
@@daverowe4566 I know pop music and rock was great in previous decades as well. It’s just that the 90’s were the beginning of the end of good music.
@caros.60723 жыл бұрын
Wow this again? Weren't there industry plants before the 2000's? To me, someone saying that music since the 2000's has declined only shows how little that someone actually goes out of their way to find good music. Because I have found it, and there is SO MUCH of it. Just not in the Charts.
@gilbertomorales44023 жыл бұрын
@@caros.6072 There’re PLENTY of bands and artists post 1999 that I love and get me pumped. The problem is precisely that: popular music, i.e.: things played on the radio, etc. were amazing. Now they’re not. What’s given out to the masses to listen to is utter trash. You have to work so hard to find good music nowadays. It shouldn’t be that way. Where’s the talent?
@scottmcgregor5623 жыл бұрын
@@caros.6072 Name anything from 2010 and on with live musicians in the top 40 that has this sophistication. I am not saying music on this level does not exist. It doesn't on any top 40 format.

Man, I haven't even recovered yet from "Comfortably Numb" and then you hit me with probably the most incredible 3/4 modern pop composition in existence. But hey, don't slow down on my account, Rick. Just keep giving us the goods. (I'll manage...somehow.) EDIT: Holy crap...you just went ahead and _actually_ called Seal.

I was in my late teens or early 20s when i first heard this song and i instantly loved it. But I was mocked by friends for loving something that wasn’t traditional to what I “should” be listing to i.e soul or reggae. But this song gave me all the feels. It brought me into another realm. I could imagine harpsichords being played or people dancing to this in a Tudor court or something. It’s just a beautiful and historical piece with real instruments and choral elements. It’s still in itunes playlist & i’m in my 50s now.
