Growing up in Morris county, New Jersey, my dad loved Rickel's. There was a location in the now defunct Ledgewood mall in Succasunna. Dad used to take me with him shopping there as a kid.
Rickel on route 18 in east Brunswick nj was my childhood location. Pathmark was next door, but we were a shop rite family.

Thank you for this. Being originally from NJ, I remember both Rickel and Channel.

I remember being told by a friend working at Rickels warehouse back in the 80's that this new home depot hardware store was going to take over the industry because there model did not use a warehouse. It was a warehouse and store in one saving payroll and employee count. Unlike Rickels which had a central warehouse with unionized and union payed employees.

I love learning about the history and economic patterns behind what went in with all these stores. I've been binging your channel all afternoon, thanks for all your hard work!

This was an awesome video! We can say that these stores help set the blueprint for Home Depot and Lowe’s. 🔥

Since you mentioned both Pergament Home Center and Channel Home Center (aka Channel Lumber) in your video, I would recommend doing a videos on both company in the future.

Funny that you mentioned that it wasn’t Amazon that ended a chain this time lol. Great video as always 😁

I did not know Rickel was swept under the Dart Group current… that is a fascinating retail tale too.

Ok now this for me is the sister video to your Jamesway video. As Jamesway was one end and Rickel were each end of an indoor mall here in Jersey. Funny enough since it's in the video it was the Succasunna/Ledgewood location. Once the Rickle closed there wasn't a home improvement store in the area. Until the strip mall over in the next lot. HL Green and some other store closed and they made them into Home Depot.

I agree about this sistering Jamesway as the Jamesway/ Rickel in Vineland NJ (originally Two Guys and now Walmart) adjoined at the L-shaped plaza. Jamesway on one side, Rickel (originally Channel) was in the corner, and a few side shops on the other end (Dusharms Pro Foot and Fahion Bug/ Fashion Bug Plus. Out front was the 2 Guys automotive building. Sat vacant until the year before Jamesway closed, became a dollar store. The Vineland Rickel is pictured at 9:58 and 11:10.

@@railroadskater2896 my dad in his youth worked at Two Guys in Rockaway. It was up the street from where Rockaway Jamesway was.

And this is why I hate Home Depot. Amazon is slowly doing a disservice as well. We used to sell on Amazon and made a ton of money. Then, Amazon caught on to what people like us were selling and where we were sourcing our stuff from, then eventually Amazon started selling exactly what we all sold and no one could compete with Amazons pricing. Phased us all out. I was a kid going to Rickels constantly with my dad. They had everything Home Depot didn’t have. Then little by little, Home Depot carried everything Rickels did. If it weren’t for Rickels, there would be no Home Depot or Lowe’s. They’re rotten companies.

Absolutely. The problem with these big mega corporations that have taken over just about every inch of industry is that they have no care for the customers or people working for them. The only people who cared about them were the mom and pops and regional operations that they bought out or killed. The age of customer service is dead. I think it truly died in 2020 with the pandemic. You see all these companies taking the easy route constantly now, where are used to be a little more rare to have outright disservice to customers. At one time it would’ve been “how do we avoid passing on expenses to customers?” Now it’s “how CAN we pass this onto the customers.” “Why have cashiers when we can make people check themselves out? Why have waitresses if we can make people go and get their own food and drinks, and make them throw their own food away. And while we’re at it, let’s charge them a bundle more than we used to even though we’re saving exponential amounts of money.” Oh and, “ how much of the food can we avoid making out of actual food?” Sad world these days. Thanks for watching!
