I also have a ruby red 360. It's easily my favorite guitar and has been for 15 years. There's just something special about Rickenbackers. And in case you didn't know, from the serial number it looks like yours was made in June of 1988. Looks great for almost 35 years old.

Thank you for an entertaining and informative video re: Rickenbacker 360 guitars. The guitar does have its own voice and unique playability. The mysterious fifth knob allows you to dial in sounds and achieve balance between the pickups. Ricks are meant to be cherished and played!

I have a 2013 jet black 620 which is probably the weirdest-looking guitar I own, but I love the way it sounds. The short scale length is a lot of fun. It's a little more difficult to play after I've been using a strat or a tele for a while because the scale length is so short, but after 10-15 minutes of warming up, it starts to feel right again.

Just wanted to thank you for making the most informative video about Rics on KZbin! I just purchased a gorgeous Mapleglo 330 and your review helped me. It is definitely a unique-feeling guitar and the pickups are quite low output and the blend is confusing, but it just sounds so good! I also love the smooth feel of the very unique laminated fretboard, which is the thickest piece of rosewood I have ever seen, and find that the narrower neck is not nearly as bad as the internet makes it out to be! Also, the thing sustains and resonates like CRAZY! I have to actually turn my delay and reverb off. All it needs is compressor and overdrive!

If you roll off the neck tone completely the third knob acts as a blend knob. The up switch position is full bass. The middle position dials in the neck and bridge pickup for a standard two pickup sound and the down switch position is bridge pickup only.

Thanks for the great video. The fretboard on your guitar is actually "Bubinga". It is commonly called "African Rosewood" but it actually isn't a rosewood at all. However, it is a decent quality hardwood very befitting of a Rickenbacker. I had a Fireglo 330/6 back in the mid 1980s and while it was a great playing guitar, I could never quite get into it's tone. The mid to late 1980s was really dominated by Strat styled instruments and with the right pickup configuration, effects chain and amp, a Strat could produce most of the tones of a RIC 6 and a Tele could get very close to a RIC 12 string. However, the RICs are beautiful looknig guitars, absolute works of art. One day I will probably buy another RIC but this time it will be a 12 String that I should have bought in the first place. Cheers from the Land Down Under.

My 1971 360/6 has been in my hand since, well, 1971 when I bought it, it is a thing of beauty. The neck on yours seems so much fatter than mine, mine is really thin, fingerboard width is around the same, but.. And despite the absurd amount of years I've played it, the frets have never needed anymore than a touch of crowning, maybe 3-4 times since new... it does require a very light touch, even with 10-46 strings I use.. True ... the company just has a business model that is very different from the big ones. It's like they actively try to stay small. Note that they don't have the import line that Gibson has with Epiphone, Fender with Squier, PRS with SE, etc. The problem that I see is that it will be hard to recruit a new generation of young RIC players that way.

@@charlie-obrien I totally agree, but there is still one problem with the theory: The 330 and other mono Ricks still have the fifth knob. So perhaps Mark Agnesi was right with his explanation: "Why does it have a fifth knob? It was the 60s man, everybody was high."

Once you play one, odds are, you'll never play anything else, I swear. The neat thing is it has 2 ext Jack's, thus allows you to hook 1 amp up clean, 1 with distortion, or play thru PA, if that's not enough, you can use cordless mic, or head set.

I like the action to be high enough so that I can dig in aggressively without any buzz. Big chords, Townshend-style. At the 12th fret, the action is at about 3.5mm for the low E string and at 3mm for the high E string. Not super-low, but still very comfortable, you don't have to fight the guitar. I've had the guitar set up at my local luthier recently, who adjusted the neck so that there is moderate relief.

@becauseguitarsolos1264
@becauseguitarsolos1264 Жыл бұрын
A lot depends on your personal preference, your budget, and the context in which you will use the amp. I'd recommend that you take the guitar with you to a shop where you can try a Vox or a Fender. See what you like and what works for you. My current amp for live settings is a Marshall DSL, which is not the first thing that comes to mind for Ricks, but which works well for me in the context of how the band sounds.

Awesome demo..that ruby red is rockin'....by special order only for now...the 1.63 inch width at the nut is cool for the 6 string 360's but for the 12 string models, both 330 and 360 it can present some challenges for less accomplished players...on the other hand, the Ricky 660 models and 1993 vintage reissue Rose Morris plus 12 string offer a 1.75 inch width at the nut.... .12 inch extra can make a difference for chording and picking..but these Ricky's are just overall superlative " works of art".. unmatched cosmetic appointments, not to mention those shimmering chord voicings...one commentator called Rickenbacker company "a guitar boutique"..and rightfully so! Awesome production!..I'm watching it again...thanks!

With that amount of fret wear do you have to have the action high? What is the action like? I just got my 2002 360 and the action seems crazy low. (I'm used to Fender guitars.) I'm guessing turning the 4 bridge screws clockwise raises the action? Thanks.
@becauseguitarsolos1264

Despite the worn-out frets, the action is not very high on this one. I'd describe it as a comfortable mid-low. I could make it lower still, but prefer to have it this way. You're right that the way to raise or lower the action is to use the screws on the bridge.

@tommylord Жыл бұрын
Thanks for doing this video. Is there a specific model name for that body shape? Was it the only Ric produced with the single binding on the bottom? I had a 360-12, same color and body style, for three years. I bought it very used at a music shop in Lewiston, Maine in 1980. It presented like it had been around a while, or had somewhat of a neglected life. That's probably the reason it was priced low enough for me to afford it. Judging by the condition, I would estimate it was at least 8-10 years old, So I like to think I had an authentic 1960-something Rickenbacker. I wasn't keen enough to look up serial numbers or anything like that back then. Sadly, it was totally consumed in a house fire in December 1983 so I'll never know exactly what year it was made.

@@becauseguitarsolos1264 Thanks for the reply. I watched a review of a 1966 Ric on another channel, and they said the stereo cable jacks were a trait of the 1960s and not featured on the 1970s guitars. I remember my Ric had the double jack with the 'Ricko Sound' moniker stamped on it. Also the wound strings were very tarnished, like they'ed never been changed. This convinces me more than ever that my guitar was a 1960s model. I had a devil of a time keeping the bottom two (twin sets) in tune. I think the guitar may have been damaged and in need of neck adjustment.

They've got a pretty unique sound, but, I'm not sure they're worth the money Rickenbacker price them at.
