Good video Rick...thanks for posting. There is a trick I do to keep the oil that runs out of the oil filter from getting all over the frame and that is to take about a 10" piece of cardboard and bend it in a semi-circle and push it back against the engine under the oil filter. Then when you loosen the oil filter the oil that spills out will run out on the card bo0ard to your catch basin and not get on the mower frame. If we share ideas like you are doing then at some point all of us will know all the little tricks. Thanks again.

Just know that this particular model is going to crap out on you at some point, more specifically the transmission. The transmissions are made entirely of plastic and it is going to fail. I had a D105; John deere did a recall on the transmissions because they knew that they were flawed by design. My local Deere dealer replaced the transmission with a new one and it failed right at 8 hours of use. The tractor had less than 20 hours on it. John Deere refused to fix it; a new transmission costs nearly $500. I sold it at a loss of about $800. The "D" and "E" series of lawn tractors are garbage and John Deere knows it. They sell them to compete with other low-end mowers on the market primarily at Lowes and Home Depot, and Deere will not take care of or support this demographic of customers. I was told this by my local John Deere dealer, and I know from my own experience dealing with John Deere. Best of luck to you.

A little late to join the comments ,but I'm old now ,lol, ive always used the bush technique if access is possible by hammering a long screwdriver or pointed bar right through the oil filter at an angle that gives maximum turn before it hits a frame for instance. Might have to do this a few times in a confined area. Never failed. WOOPS ! It's been mentioned already, but enjoyed your vid .

Here is a great tip. When adding more than one qt if oil, always use the first bottle to put the partial amount, then add the other bottle as a whole quart. This will prevent any over filling.

@@vin-r5384 yeah really.... that tip doesn't prevent over filling at all? Not sure why the order matters or what it prevents if the partial is first or second? I'm "guessing" that if you accidently pour too much of the partial quart in... you can correct by not adding the entire second quart? These are splash lube systems, not pressurized... so long as you don't WAY over fill it... being a little over full is better than under.. especially if you have hills where the oil isn't going to be "level".

Great video but one tip: no need to tighten the oil filter as much as you did; it'll only make it more difficult to remove next oil change. There is no real high pressure in the lubrication system; the oil drain plug and oil filler cap/dipstick not being tight at all is proof of that. Best way to install an oil filter in indeed to oil the gasket first (neat trick, using the old one to mate), screw it on handtight, then tighten another half-turn. That's all it needs.

I was wondering if anybody was going tell him that... Hahaha.... It was driving me nuts watching him... Never need a tool to get it off... I'll take it go back-and-forth tighten and loosen until I get it just right feels tight but not over tight.... I've had to absolutely destroy the oil filter dear God. Can be dangerous to with the metal all tore up.

Over filling oil may cause plug fouling, but bigger consequence can be blown seal(s), as over filling too much increases crankcase pressure.

a tip that could save you some trouble is the oil drain cap unscrews clockwise and tightens counter clockwise. i just replaced a motor some other idiot just changed the oil in and he turned the cap clockwise to tighten it. it worked and lasted a few weeks but the oil was slowly dripping out and the old lady who was cutting grass never checked on it. it only took two weeks for it to blow up. $650 (not including labor) later and she has a new motor

Good job. If your tractor is anything like my John Deere 125, when you go to change the sparks plugs the first one is easy to get at. The second one is a killer!! It’s buried under the engine cover. There is no way to get it unless you take the the entire engine covering off. It is definitely dumb engineering. The next time I have to change the spark plugs, I’m going to cut a whole in the engine covering to make it easier to get at the spark plug number 2.
@RickMammana

Hey Richard, That's a good idea to get the second plug out. My D105 only has one cylinder, 17.5HP. So it will be easy for me but less power than yours. Thanks for watching!

I saw the new 2018 oil change should take 30 seconds. You screw out the old oil filter and screw in the new one - they say it is that easy, it looks like it too. Anyone know anything about it? It cost 50 bucks, but no mess.
@chrisl2090

Yeah its a "consumer" type Easy-Install filter that only has .8 quarts of oil in it. The 30 second oil change doesn't even change half the oil in the engine. Its a fail in my book. Get the conversion kit and go back to changing it the right way.

A Fram 4967 oil filter is 2.3 inches long, a Fram 3614 is 3 and 1/2, and a Fram 3600 is nearly 5. All should fit 17 horse and above lawn tractors... They also cost a lot less, around $2.50 vs $10 for the OEM ones... Amount of oil should be around 64 ounces, two quarts exactly, with the 3600.... I use Shell Rotella T5 in 10W-30...

Question: why would you do oil change and filter change at 8? You can add oil regularly after checking the dip stick. Manual asks only for applying grease and lubricant at 8. It asks for oil filter change only at 50/annual.

It shouldn't be called John Deere "NO" call it "DEAR JOHN" you just got screwed! Don't buy any of their products ,service center sucks. They just don't care like they use to! Try calling them.... I dare you. All they have are excuses.

Cervice center sucks because these aren't John Deere products. They're an MTD with a John Deere badge stuck on it. If you actually get a mower or anything else from an actual John Deere dealer, they are actual John Deeres and they are amazing
