Great video!!! I was a smoker, but quit in 1980 and have never slipped back. I can tell you there is a difference in the flavor of the tobacco. It's hard to describe the taste if you've never tasted tobacco. I was a Marlboro smoker for a long time. One day at work, when you were still allowed to smoke in the plant and office, I ran out of cigarettes and bummed one from one of my co-workers. He smoked Winston's. I smoked it and immediately switched to Winston's. All I can say is that in comparison, Marlboro tasted heavy and dirty (yes...cigarettes are dirty), but I mean a dirty taste. Winston's had a crisp clean taste. Remember, tobacco is a plant and there are more than 70 species. Just like salad greens, each species has a unique taste; some you like, some you don't. Just like salad greens, some people love Kale some people don't. Anyway...my days of smoking are long gone and I'm glad I quit. Again...GREAT VIDEO!!!

I don't recognize the apartment setting at 1:33. The furnishing look like the Mertzes apartment, but the walls do not. Nor have I seen the characters dressed that way. It appears this could be a skit from some other variety show perhaps. Chesterfield cigarettes were for decades a favorite of the stars who always appeared in their adverts. Later the brand virtually disappeared. It's typically silly to cut smoking scene's except possibly because of children today. They smoked back then, partially out of ignorance. We should be intelligent enough to understand the difference.

Interesting on two counts. Lucy was the Chesterfield Girl on billboards in New York in the early 1930s before she moved to Hollywood (and you may have seen her in a 1940s magazine ad in which she comments, "It's MY cigarette.") And when Lucy was pregnant with Little Ricky on "I Love Lucy," Philip Morris specifically told her she was NOT to be seen smoking cigarettes on-screen... (Speaking of smoking on-screen, Garry Moore of "I've Got a Secret" was seldom seen without a cigarette (or a huge WINSTON ashtray) on-camera. Winston, of course, was his long-time sponsor

But this one I've never heard of before. So YEAH! I learned a new secret!! Thanks! Tobacco itself, is not really bad. Whats really bad about smoking is all the addictive chemicals they soak and spray onto the tobacco in production of American cigarettes. THAT stuff is deadly for you. Cigars are cleaner as cigars are more "pure" tobacco that isn't heavily saturated with addictive chemicals. But, I wish they would leave these shows whole. I like to see these old shows in their entirety, and not chopped up to bits just to sooth some massive egos.

There are two scenes that are almost never cut: 1) When Lucy is inside the TV and does an advertisement for Phillip Morris (she had taken the inside of the TV out for some reason.) 2) When they were talking about baby names and Ricky turns to Lucy and says (along the lines of): "How about Phillip if it's a boy and Morris if it's a girl." Another point. I say this because many people weren't around from that time period, and may not understand how the system worked. In the 1950s, television shows only had one sponsor - a holdover from the days of radio. Shows would negotiate with the merchants and had to agree to push the product in their productions. If say the sponsor was Maytag, a appliance such as a washing machine had to appear in the show. Often the star would appear between acts, extolling the virtues of the washing machine - or whatever product sold by the sponsor. This practice eventually fell out of favor due to the expense involved, and switched to many sponsors signing up to have their commercials appear on popular shows. This broke the domination - such as what was demonstrated in I Love Lucy - of what a sponsor would or would not allow to be shown by the actors.
@gcfifthgear3 ай бұрын
Those "integrated" commercials were part of the sponsor's contract. While not so much done with food products, just look at most sitcoms from the 1960s. "Bewitched" used Chevrolet cars (and there were many scenes with Sam and Darrin enjoying Aunt Jemima pancakes, too); "Hazel" used Ford vehicles; "Leave it to Beaver" was co-sponsored by Chrysler and that's why you saw Ward driving a Plymouth after the first season). Plus, General Electric was a co-sponsor, and June had the top-of-the-line GE appliances in her new home!
@cjmarshall02213 ай бұрын
@@gcfifthgear Yes, now looking back, I remember that. I recall seeing Darin (Dick York) and Sam having breakfast with Quaker Oats quick oatmeal. Darin yells at Sam for using witchcraft, until Sam points out how easy and fast it is using quick oatmeal. The practice of one company sponsoring a company - or being a major sponsor - was gradually phased out over time due to costs. They are most preventant in the early 60s, and practically gone by the end of the decade.

Mom also related to me that the Doctor who "delivered me" (a lady Doctor, which I guess was somewhat rare at the time) would smoke while she was attending to my mom during her regular pre-birth visits. Had the network offered Lucy/Desi anther time or another night, they would have been sponsored by Chevrolet, Proctor and Gamble or even the company that made Chesterfields. But, that half hour on that night was what was available. So they were stuck with that sponsor.

Ones' demise may occur from: 1) lung cancer AND never smoked 2) cirrhosis of the liver AND never drank and on AND on no need for YES, BUT INCREASES CHANCES my parents smoked My Gma used lard AND bacon grease in ALL foods All lived 90+ years go figure

Nothing bad about lard. It was again corporate propaganda to try to change Americans diets.

Interesting. Did you know in an episode of Three Stooges, about the graveyard scene, Curly is in a phone booth yelling, "Phillip Morris." The guy in a black top hat says, "I'm Phillip." Curly says, "Hello, Sir." And Curly smashes his hat being scared. My parents explained to me who he was. That is interesting about Lucy. Thanks, Rick. Take care.

Ohh I knew this secret. Normally you stump me. Yeah the health consequences don’t make smoking worth it. My smoking grandparents passed away due to cancer

They could have just had Lucy smoking a cigarette without the cigarette pack being displayed. BTW, since you have totally stopped doing live streams, I am not really following you anymore. So sad, because you are very photogenic, dynamic, and knowledgeable when you do your live feeds. You really need to do things that your fans want you to do.

Is this content for children? Adults don’t need a lecture on smoking. We had health class

I agree that I hate being around cigarette smoke. Was annoyed when going to a restaurant that had "smoking" and "non-smoking" sections, but, although seated "in" the latter section, it was so CLOSE to the other as to be just as unpleasant as being IN that section!

Airplanes even had those “separate” places - doesn’t work in an enclosed tuna can!

They still to this day drank beer on tv, it looks like it but it's not. So who cares if the PM package had chester

I would have just switched out my Chesterfields in the Philip Morris packs too, no brainer I Love Lucy plays on my computer every day for at least a couple episodes from Pluto TV ❤. Chesterfield's are awfully strong cigarettes 🤢 No I did notice she never really seemed to inhale sometimes she would take it up through her nose a little bit blow it right out maybe I noticed the few times that she did smoke a Philip Morris before she switched them out I don't know

Yes, smoking was cool, came with a certain amount of prestige. I remember the cigarette commercials on tv. Marlboro Man, I'd rather fight than switch, I'd walk a mile for a Camel, to name a few. And people smoking EVERYWHERE !! Even in hospitals !!! I flew on planes when smoking was allowed after takeoff and in flight. I was a kid, not a smoker. So...years and years of second hand smoke, even at home. I did smoke myself for many years. But finally quit. Best devision I ever made. And Rick, I for sure can't stand the smell of it. At all

Shame that those heavy smokers died relatively young. If not, they would have been around to entertain us for many more years to come.

Never smoked or tried a cigarette my entire life. Neither did my mum and made folks go outside if they needed to smoke.

I do not smoke ever in my life Rick. It broke my heart that they had to smoke. and did not like the smell of cigarettes. Lucy and Desi were amazing
