For such a tall door, the precision of the carpentry is something to behold. When the door is closed, you see that the hinges, which on most doors would be visible from the side into which the door swings, are not visible, indicating that they must be more like modern hidden cabinet hinges, and the middle of the doors meet so precisely so as not to permit light from the background to show through the gap between them, the entire effect making the doors vanish into the wall. Truly monumental attention to detail for a set piece that would only see a few minutes of screen time.

This is my favorite episode of the Twilight Zone, followed by He's Alive and Jess-belle. I had never thought about the door, but you can see that everything in the set has been designed to emphasize the weakness of the individual and the power of the state over him. The only thing missing is some sort of national emblem.

Hey Rick, I am fascinated by early television & how scenes were created. The Twilight Zone was one series that was really good at creating illusions with props & camera angles, things that would be considered crood by today's standards with all the technology used now. To me seeing something like a 25 foot tall door, knowing that someone had to build it makes it that much more special!!! Thanks for sharing a very interesting video!!! 👍👍

Yes they both did 4 episodes each and a close 2nd place prize goes to young Bill Mumy (Will Robinson for "Lost in Space") who did 3 episodes. As a matter of fact Mumy and Klugman both starred in an episode together playing father and son. The name of the episode was "In Praise of Pip".

The lighting was also worthy of note. The contrast of light and shadow in that room was perfect. It might also be hiding the fact that there are probably more people in that room. When we are in Romney Wordsworth’s apartment the contrast is bright and welcoming. 25 feet for a doorway is pretty impressive. Imagine if that door was used in the classic episode “To Serve Man.” If they lighting was a little darker, the Kanamit(played by Richard Kiel)would loom even larger in appearance.

All of Burgess Meredith's appearances on TZ are great but my favorite is "Printers' Devil", Season 4 episode 9. It's a 1 hr episode instead of 30 minutes.

Nothing can beat the original Twilight Zone. I agree, the Obsolete Man wasnt a bad episode, but it wasnt my favorite. It's funny how some of their episodes reflect what is going on in today's society. The props they used and the single cameras for filming are so different from today, but hey it was the early 60's.

How do you open a 25' pair of doors? Probably with a pneumatic or hydraulic system. The other interesting set piece here is the high podium that the chancellor is on that puts him above the person to be judged and almost godlike. Like looking down from the heavens on high. The symbology to convey the State acting like a counterfeit deity is well done. This is one of my favorite episodes and I think it may be the most thought provoking and relevant to our human condition, and certainly applicable to our political atmosphere today in 2022.

Very interesting episode and the look of the set made me wonder if it could have been an early influence for Tim Burton. Reminds me of the way he shoots sets.

A side note: This episode's director, Elliot Silverstein, was for a few years David Cassidy's stepfather, as his mother married him a few years after Jack Cassidy divorced her.

The director created some startlingly Orwellian shots to introduce the opening scene. I thought Serling's script superbly defined the dangers of censorship and totalitarianism. Meredith and Weaver portrayed their roles perfectly.

While it was animated. The 1950 Disney's Cinderella had a towering door that Cinderella had to go through and talk to her evil stepmother. As she entered the room a large bed with canopy you could see her cold piercing angry eyes gaze on poor Cinderella. I thought perhaps the doors were 15 ft. high in TZ. Boy was I WRONG! It did have dramatic staging, which I love!

My observation is that shows like theses are becoming more real! A bit creepy! Also I think this was done again only with a different cast and ending. Not sure.

Burgess Meredith was a bookworm in Time Enough At Last , now a librarian in this one. A good ' what if ' view of the future and man's inventions. Think about the vcr and how amazing it was to see a new movie in your home. Now the vcr and the theater seem obsolete , with money interests trying to stamp them out. I still enjoy watching my old movies on my vcr , kill me if you can. Life goes on , new inventions come and go , but it is the motive behind eliminating things that will make them live or die. Books as a source of knowledge and wisdom will never die, and those who ignore them or read digital can never eliminate them. Getting lost in the pages of a good book will always be something a majority of humans crave. Stories of the human condition have been told and written for centuries.

Interesting commentary, but you could take it to the obvious logical conclusion. Rod Serling was always warning about fascism taking over a society (his episodes 'Third from the Sun' and 'He Lives' are prime examples), especially by way of propaganda. In 'The Obsolete Man' , one of my personal favorites, the stage set for the trials has the pieces patterned after what the Nazis used in their rallies. The tall, thin spire reaching high above in many guises was their trademark. Think of the rallies that Hitler and his henchmen had - always a tall dais, w/a towering set of pillars with the Nazi banner reaching far upwards behind them. And the banner almost always waved. Just in case there wasn't a wind to do so, there was a special electric-motored machine that assured it would happen. Structure & propaganda to make you feel insignificant - except as a cog in the state machine. This Twilight Zone episode shows how it can be updated & used by others, even w/out a banner - did you notice?

Those doors were reminiscent of the incredibly tall doors into Hitler's chancellery office. There was a huge long hallway leading up to those doors, and it was all designed to be intimidating, and make anybody walking through them feel insignificant.
