I think the use of filters and lighting changes were extremely resourceful. Your explanation was comprehensive and easy to follow the complicated pieces of the shooting. I believe the somewhat exaggerated facial features were used to compensate for the lack of a color palette being it's shot in B/W.

@@ricknineg …hey Rick, actually the same makeup and filters trick was done for Fredric March’s Jekyll & Hyde transformation scenes in 1932. Spencer Tracy’s (1941) Jekyll & Hyde transformations were done with dissolves through various stages of makeup. Check the Fredric March scenes out on KZbin. They’re amazing.

You have a great description of the method but it would be good to see the make-up in color and have the lighting change then see the scene in black and white. Or maybe a link to a video showing it. Good job. One of my favourite Twilight Zones.

It is amazing what they accomplished it the days before computers and CGI. The movie The Forbidden Planet was amazing for what today would be CGI, but was then done by hand panting each frame of film.

That look with the horns was such a typical well-used image that I don't blame anyone for going that way. Remember in The Usual Suspects when the guy says the best trick the devil ever did was to convince the world he doesn't exist

Props to John Carradine for his portrayal of "Brother Jerome". His ambiguous performance really sold the premise of the episode pivot-point where the guy being held could have been Satan or just some poor schmuck that they thought was Satan.

The red/green filter technique goes back to the early 30s (ex: Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde) and the “behind the pillars” moving shot goes back to the Werewolf of London in 1935

This show was so unique and incredible. It was WAY ahead of it's time, and each episode seemed to carry a message (subtle or not so subtle) that truly mattered. Thanks for remembering this incredible program, Rick. It is definitely one of the top five greatest televisions programs that ever aired. Each week had a truly high quality script, complete with incredible acting.

During the silent movie era, a woman-to-witch transformation was effected by the color filter effect you described. I don't recall the name of the movie. "The Howling Man" took the transformation a step further by means of the "invisible cuts" you described. It was very clever. Thanks.

I still remember this episode from when it first aired. My parents didn't like The Twilight Zone, so I had to go upstairs to their bedroom and watch on their television. The ending was super scary, (for a ten-year old), but I knew that if I were to scream or react in some way, I would not be allowed to watch anymore, as my parents would feel that it was too much for my age group. Maybe they would have been right, in this instance. I loved The Twilight Zone and I still miss Rod Serling. He probably would have lived longer if he hadn't smoked, but I seem to remember him with a perpetual cigarette.

This episode is not shown much, but it’s one of the very best of the series, in my opinion. Charles Beaumont’s writing is superb. Beaumont died tragically at only 38 from what was apparently early-onset Alzheimer's. Later in his short life, he could no longer write coherently, so friends like William Nolan & Jerry Sohl wrote manuscripts which they submitted in his name, just so he had an income. R.I.P. 😥

I agree. They definitely could have gone further and made him appear more cartoonish and even like a Madi Gras mask or something. But kept it human. Which showed we are all human and have a fallen nature until salvation. And I think that’s what bothered people. The ones that say to themselves Well maybe them but not me.

Yes, very effective camera tricks! The lighting effect was first used in 1932's Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde with Fredric Marc. The pillar camera trick was first used in Werewolf of London in 1935, with Henry Hull. Both very innovative and very effective.

Thank you for this one - speaking as a person born in the 1950s, the make-up transformation was perfect for the times. Less make-up would have made it appear "chintzy", as many of the monster movies at that time left the audience feeling cheated by only showing a leg or hand of the "monster". If the make-up were too over the top, it could have been comical. TV audiences were not as sophisticated or demanding in those days, they just wanted to be entertained, and this episode fit the bill. Seeing it as a kid, it was actually kind of scary. But in a good way.

Have loved this episode since a little boy. As an adult, the transformation is still exciting to watch, but I think it would be more effective to have transformed into a repulsive, hideous demon instead of a Halloween costume--looks a bit like Gounod's Faust. But it sure scared the hell out of me when I was little!

I think the design of the “devil” being almost the stereotypical face that was common at the time, made it effective and sort of more frightening. Why? Well, that caricature devil that was seen in many illustrations and even kids Halloween costumes had made him into a less frightening character, almost a “Disney villain “ type. This episode tells us that this character is indeed evil and a danger to our world. The Twilight Zone gave the darkness back to the devil.

This was a great episode. I didn't think it was scary. It was one of those episodes that just makes you think. The use of lighting, in this black and white classic is what made it for me. The episode of Twilight Zone that I found to be scary was "Talking Tina" with "Telly Savalas". His 100 Birthday would have been next week. I remember not wanting to go into my sister's room after that episode.

I love this episode. The use of filters is so genius and I love how they did the transformation while the actor was walking. I think this episode also hit me the hardest with the message since I am a religious person. Of course he didn’t recognize the devil when he first saw him. How else would a devil get good people to do bad things without it seeming harmless and innocent?

This is one of my most favorite episodes, very well written and acting in the episode. The intrigue and how they turn the camera to make it look like he's losing his mind Everytime he went to the cell to speak to the devil. It almost makes it feel like he's going crazy. A classic and favorite, a 61-year-old episode, first aired a month after I was born so I didn't see it till the reruns ran in syndication. I loved your Twilight Zone's 'The Howling Man' post. Thank you for doing this, and here is my review much like yours. We all have our favorite Zone's but this one stands far ahead of many. Just watching again last night brought back all of its excitement and quality. This compelling episode excels on every level: The perfect cast choices for the doubting traveler who succumbs to the evil's influences; the head monk played by the outstanding John Carradine that adds charisma to every role and the perfect devil played by Robin Hughes who a year later did a fine job in 'Thriller: Trio of Terror' about a man who escaped his smothering death by only seconds. Throughout the episode a fabulous touch of camera angles depicting emotions and emphasizing draw us all closer inside the story. And the magnificent music that reigns over the devil when he has won and transforms into what he is was born to be is both chilling and captivating. I especially love this ending: Robin Hughes's amazing make up and sympathetic eyes as his appearance from the innocent poor imprisoned moaning soul wearing moth eaten clothing that plays on your heartstrings to the overpowering larger than life fearless devil, not forgetting the beautiful lighting and shadows that can only be created by the days black & white filming that envelopes the entire story. If you've never seen this one or haven't in awhile, give yourself a treat and take the 25 minutes that will make your day.

Every time I watched this episode, I can always see where the cuts are with the pillars. It's subtle, but sometimes the pillar seems to move, since even one frame off in a film can be noticeable. Doesn't detract from the rest of the show, but that scene always bothers me since to me, the cuts are obvious.

Check into how the production actually had to change the way they filmed “The Lonely” during the first season and how that also changed TV production (union rules) when on location, in particular in Death Valley. They learned some hard, dangerous lessons they put to use whenever that location was ever used again on TZ. Jean Marsh is still around. You could see if she ever commented on that experience. I don’t believe Marc Scott Zicree included her in his book.

Rick, thanks so much for reviewing this particular episode, always has been one of my favorites. I have the entire Twilight Zone collection on DVD, so I can watch any episode I want at any time. The reason that I mention that is, the last time I saw this episode on TV during a SciFi channel marathon, they gutted the entire transformation scene. The way they aired it was that Ellington lets the prisoner out of his cell and turns his back, the prisoner waves his hand and Ellington falls down, then the prisoner begins his walk. The very next scene is the devil standing in full costume at the window, ready to disappear. Very disappointing, and I'm glad to have the series on DVD. Thanks again for showing this ... :-)

I, for one, LOVE the make up and costume! As soon as it's done, you KNOW who he's supposed to be. Anything else, and someone could argue "Oh, it's just a monster" or "It's just some demon, it's not actually THE devil/Satan" but when you see all those classic elements we associate with the devil you know who it is.

When I was a very young boy, I saw this. It was the scariest Twilight Zone episode that I had ever seen. I had nightmares and never forgot it.

I remember when I was a kid. This episode scared the hell out of my sister. Growing up in New York the twilight zone was on every night one night this episode came on it scared my sister so badly she had nightmares for weeks me and my brother would stand outside her bedroom door howling

Seen it many many times. I'm a Twilight zone fan and I've seen every episode multiple times. Personally I think the full-blown character that we know as the devil (even though he actually presents himself as an angel of Light and is a false light) made it clear as to who this person actually was instead of just somebody mystical or somebody bad... It very clearly was the devil. I think they did a great job accomplishing what they wanted to accomplish.

a great atmospheric episode. I think the classic devil crescendo was the right call for 1960. still comes across as the devil showing off. thanks!

i was twelve when I saw this in its first broadcast. I was a Twilight Zone fan as it was a rare breed. Remember being riveted by the walk of transformation down the corridor. You have to put in context my experience with special effects up to 1960 as to why this really caught my attention.

Amazing, thanks for the tech explanation. I realized the darkening and the changes behind the columns, but the makeup and filters were new to me. For the time (1960) I don't think they overdid the 'devil' make up too much. At least they didn't give him full horns and a pointed tail.

It's a great episode, the mood created by the weather and lighting really hits the mark. This is up there with the best of the series.

Interesting how they used the make up and filters. Thanks for the great explanation, I was a photography student so that helped me understand. I used to watch all of these episodes as reruns but never saw this one but I will seek it out.

For all fans out there, a must-see (which also happens to be on KZbin) is what I consider to be the PILOT for TZ, though that was never the known intention. "THE TIME ELEMENT" ran on Desilu Playhouse in 1958 - and it's really STRANGE seeing Ricky and Lucille hosting such an airing, but yes that's absolutely true! It may actually be my favorite "Twilight Zone episode" though it WASN'T AN EPISODE. This is Rod Serling, though, all the way. This is worth looking up, for sure..
