That pseudo-photographic shot of the island from space is the most unreal version! The logs on the S that Gilligan jumps look to be 5 feet long. I used the baseline of the L as a guide...which means that even adding room for exceptionally radiant firelight, the island must be something like 20 feet across and a little over 100 feet long.

I always try to remember that the scenes that involve a comedy bit are sorta unreliable narration. So yeah the Astronaut view is clearly meant to be a joke an they just used some random island and superimposed the SOL onto it. It would have cost much more to get a model done since they didnt have exact specs just for one joke shot.

My theory is what the astronauts saw was another island that someone did have Sol's name on it, mainly because of your own comment being too accurate with what I was thinking. the first 2 maps are the closest to accurate and probably a mixture of both.

@@ricknineg Well my take on the so called creepy could just have been a maintenance guy that was not aware that from his perceptive, he assumed that the of distance from where he stood, he would have never thought that he could be visible to the crew being videotaped, he just happen to be there as a curious bystander,. If I had worked for the studio, and I would been repairing something on the opposite end, I would have stood there to, so I don't see anything out of the ordinary, now on the other hand if the man would have appeared to be floating 5 feet above ground then, that would been documented and talked about for centuries to come. But he was just an employee that was curious about the development of that particular series of events. So Rick based on my feeling, please respond and correct me if I missed something that suggest otherwise.

It’s amazing how many continuity and consistency errors were made in most 50’s and 60’s sitcoms. And as you pointed out before, many different secondary roles were given to the same actor (e.g. Frank Nelson in I Love Lucy) hoping no one would notice. I believe this is all due to the fact that producers couldn’t imagine that those episodes would be seen more than once or possibly twice in summer reruns.

I've mentioned this before and agree wholeheartedly. For a show that began almost 60 years ago, I'm sure the writers etc NEVER imagined anyone rewatching and comparing the actual shape of the island 🤣 That being said, I think it's fun to do so!

Not only 50's and 60's shows, but later shows as well. In some of the earlier M*A*S*H episode with Henry, Trapper, and Frank, it is 1952. Then in some of the later episodes with COL Potter, B.J. and Winchester, it is 1951. In an earlier episode, Radar had a tattoo. Then a later episode was about Radar getting a tattoo. There are all kinds of continuity errors on TV, much more obvious than the shape of Gilligan's Island. I think the writers of the shows need to pay more attention to the show that they are writing for and have more respect for fans.

My guess would be the Professors map is the most accurate. The Astronauts are looking through a lense. Back in the day our technology wasn't that good. If they got a fish bowl effect looking through the lenses you might then see an island that looked elongated. This could account for the way the astronauts view of the island was so different.

As a researcher, primarily in documents more than photographs, I can speak from experience. You'd be surprised at how different two maps from the same, earlier, century actually look. The first two maps were drawn by people at ground level, with little experience at map making. Still, those two maps more closely resemble each other than any two maps of Taiwan made during the nineteenth century. As for the photograph (third image), I've tried to create fictional maps using images from space; and the third image is completely unrealistic. Somebody was in a hurry when he created that image, particularly the lagoon beach, which looks as if a chunk was scooped from a cake or something like that. I favor the butterfly collector's map over the professor's map. Most islands I've seen in maps and shot-from-space photos seem slightly (or more) elongated, apparently consistent with the flow of surrounding ocean currents.
@TheLastSane1

I would have to watch a few of the early episodes again but the Professor was an Amateur cartographer at least so his map should be the best of the two. Also it fits with the whitish regions probably just meant to be vague areas of note (The mountain, the huts, and the small lack below them) which are all three more defined on the Collector's map. the Professor was less worried about landmarks than overall size and shape were as the Collector was marking landmarks.
@correlfreehand9454
@correlfreehand9454 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheLastSane1 i would say combine profs and the other and probably would be the most accurate. one went for general size and features, while the other went for detail of places not the island itself. so i would say profs is more accurate physically, while the detailed one could be added to profs and fit together to be more detailed. the last one. i think was done on short notice, and they forgot what it really looked like and winged it.
@SmallSpoonBrigade
@SmallSpoonBrigade 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheLastSane1 But, it's not. It vastly overstates the size of the lagoon and the location. We know definitively that the lagoon is not that large with respect to the island just because of how long it takes, an island small enough for that lagoon to be so prominent would be only a couple football fields in length. The final one is in some respects probably better, but as Jerry suggested, it was probably a quick job and not something they were likely to stand by. Given that there had only been 2 depictions in the previous 90 episodes, I'd wager they wouldn't have attempted to maintain continuity if the 4th season had been filmed. I'd also suspect that given that these were being aired on TV and home copies didn't become a thing for at least another decade, that there wasn't any effort made to make things consistent as you probably wouldn't see the episodes back to back and it was very hard to save screenshots.

The problem with the professor and the butterfly hunter's map is that the map is pretty much circular or oval with the huts near the midpoint. But in the show, the castaways often referred to "The other side of the island" as if it was rather far away, inaccessible and isolated. Obviously they were frequently at the lagoon, so when they went to the other side of the island, where did they go? I believe the space-view image was most accurate because the huts would have been at the lagoon end and the 'other side' could refer to the head at the other end. That ties in with Gilligan constantly being far away while roaming the island, presumably looking for food, berries, seeds, fruits, coconuts, etc. and frequently making discoveries like mind reading seeds, unknown wells, and native tribes with ugly daughters.
@lisas7741
@lisas7741 2 жыл бұрын
But remember the cave with the gigantic spider in it was supposed to be on the other side of the island which meant it wasn’t close to where they lived. The one from space is the least likely to be the right one because that would make the island a lot smaller then we see in other episodes.

Many remarks to the "Other side of the Island" and it always looked like a big deal, not a stroll.. BEWARE the Head Hunters! The producers thought about getting Gilligan his own Dinosaur for the show. Meaning BIG island! They even caught the "Old boar" for dinner, and the occasional Gorilla! Keep up the great work!

The interior of the lagoon's beach would never be so calm during filming if it had that shallow of an entrance from the ocean in the third version, which is clearly a cartoon drawing rather than a photograph. I vote for the Professor's as it could be much bigger in size. The second version has the hut encampment really big for the size of the island and mountains would be not in proportion.

The first two are definitely not right. We know that conclusively from all the time they spend near and in the lagoon. If those maps are correct, then the island is only a few hundred feet across. The answer is: the Professor is running a con. He had a grant to study the effects of putting a cross-section of modern people in a primitive setting. It was HE that orchestrated that particular group of people going on that particular cruise at the particular time. He knew that the storm was coming and that they would be caught up in it. He calculated they would land on that island, with a little help. Don't you find it strange that they all fell asleep during this storm and woke up on the island? The Professor slipped them al a mickey and used a sub that was tracking them to tow them to the island. Then, with the help of the sub crew. they piloted the Minnow onto the beach and damaged it so that the "castaways" couldn't use it to leave the island. The various visitors and situations were all orchestrated by the Professor to see how the group would react and adapt.

I think the professor is most accurate. As a master of several sciences it would be easy. The butterfly collector comes close to prof map. I can’t explain the astronauts unless what they are looking at is 2 islands that are so close but separated by water. Would explain why prof ignored it to focus on where they were at. Prof did mention there were other islands nearby when they had a headhunter after them and cannibals. My guess the astronauts viewer didn’t show the water gap between both islands

Hi Rick. I think the long Island from space is the most accurate for 2 reasons. First, there were several episodes that mentioned, "the other side of the island ", which would be away from the lagoon and hut area. Also, at the end of the opening credits, the island shown is definitely linear and not circular.
@lanternlite75

There's no aerial view of the island in the opening, you can't tell if it's circular or oblong from a practically ground level view.

Well.., if we were working entirely within the story universe, I'd have to go with the astronaut view, because.., we are shown a 'real' image of the island. It's not a graphic drawn by somebody in-universe. However, taking the view from outside the fourth wall, knowing the way TV works, each production team is tasked with props in the moment and won't always have somebody around versed in the right information about what is and is not canon. I mean, there's no real island. Personally, I'm inclined to go with the Professor's original map; it has the advantage of his being the archetype of Man of Modern Knowledge who has lived on the island and presumably walked its perimeter and given it the cartography treatment. And he's not going to make mistakes, because his archetypal representation doesn't allow for error. His mind is perfect within the sphere of science. Plus his map just looks cooler. -Those shaded areas are how cartographers indicate altitude changes. Not lakes, because water bodies get hard outlines, so hills or mountains. (I had a great grade 5 teacher who taught us how to draw maps. I was very likely thinking of Gilligan's Island while doing my homework for her class!) Anyway, I really enjoy your videos! You've got just such a great attitude and interest in this stuff. Cheers!

When we were kids in the early 70s we lived in studio city ca across the st. from CBS studios. We were told about the "lagoon" and found it on the south end of the studio ( this around 3 years after the show was canceled) to say it was a disappointment is a uderstatement.They eventually paved over the lagoon and it's now a parking lot. That lagoon was really nasty.

The way the lagoon opens to the ocean leaves only one map able to be an accurate depiction; The view from space which would be the best way to truly know the island's shape.

The one from space would have to be the right one, but that would mean the lagoon would be salt water, even if it where a spring it is to close to the ocean, the professors version would be more likely to have a fresh water lagoon.

My cable has been out for two weeks now, funny this popped up on my YT because I’ve been watching nothing but Gillian’s Island. I have the complete set and it’s one of my favorites. I’m actually watching that episode now. What makes this show so much fun is the show couldn’t have a better cast and the producer had done an amazing job. Great getting to watch the behind the scenes interview with the creator Sherwood Schwartz. He was a brilliant man, had a master science degree in biology and that’s how he new what lines to write for Russell Johnson the professor. Funny too, all the things they had on the island with them for just a 3 hour tour but I think the cast made the show no doubt. Too bad it was canceled to make room for Gunsmoke which was a great show too but seems they could have made a spot. They were told a season 4 was going to roll out and many of them went out and purchased new homes. Too bad.

...since I started thinking about such things, I always figured that the Howells were moving to an "Island getaway bungalow" on a privately owned island that they recently purchased, somewheres along the route of "The Three Hour Tour" (a different island than the one they got marooned on)... ...they chartered the SS Minnow and packed a few trunks of their belongings in the Minnow's hold, and also a couple of war surplus cargo-boat-drones (built by the Howell Maritime Construction Company, no doubt) basically being towed by radio control from the Minnow... ...this is how I explained the abundance of goods and materials washing up into the lagoon in my young mind...

One other thing to note about the two hand-drawn maps; the professor's and Lord Beasley's maps have the N & S switched. Not only that the E & W would necessarily differ as well. As for the accuracy. I'd have to go with the professor, but an overhead viewing from a plane.....well!

This is easy, Both the opening shot and the astronauts shot of the island can not be the same island the castaways were on! We all know from many episodes, that there were actual volcanos and mountain cliffs, etc.! Also I believe the island had to be huge as for them not to bump into Wrong Way Nelson and the Jungle boy living on the other side of it right away!

If he is drawing topographically, the spots denote higher elevation, getting progressively lighter as the elevation rises. If drawn to represent vegetation, the lighter spots represent thicker growth since he is using a blackboard. Basic cartography techniques.

I should search for a road map. I remember one episode that someone visited the island and found a sign one of the castaways put up saying “freeway under construction”. It’s odd to build a freeway when the theme song mentioned “no motor cars”. As for the island pictured during the closing credits of Gilligan’s Island, it’s a 28 acre island in a bay on the northeast side of Oahu. And yes that small island is within swimming distance of Oahu complete with cars and freeways of its own.

There was also an episode where they had found some tablet that showed the Island and they thought the way off the island (that Gilligan had been using as a tray for about a month). The professor determined it was a map on how to get TO the island not OFF it. Well if they reversed the directions they could get off sillies. I don't recall how much of that map was shown.

To me, the Professor's map looks like the best depiction of how the island is laid - out. Specially with the placement of the mountain ranges. But, I just wish I could figure out actually where each of the castaway's huts were placed in reference to their dining table and the lagoon. Sometimes while watching the series, in various episodes, it looks like either one of their huts is the nearest to the dining table they used. I've watched the series several times, and, can't figure out exactly where each hit is in reference to those places. Anyone know the answer ? TY for sharing this video with us. .
@imkluu

None of the maps I could find, or those even drawn on the show, can be correct considering the things found on the island. There is a volcano and a large rock formation with caves, as well as the glade where the huts are located and the area around the lagoon implies a much larger island than shown. None of the maps are large enough, and even that island seen from orbit can't be right, as the letters were made form 8 foot long tree trunks and yet they were a quarter the width of the island. We know this can't be true. As for the placement of the huts. Only one map I saw, which again was far too small, and didn't even have an inlet lagoon, showed there to be five huts in a circular placement around the central table area, open on the south end toward the lagoon. The problem is that the way they were placed you should be able to see at least two huts from any angle looking past the central table and I do not remember ever seeing two huts in any scene, which implies they are much farther spaced from each other. This again implies a much larger island. I can remember nearly every hut being seen behind the central table in different episodes, and far too close for the distant placement of the huts to be true. The geography of the island, its size, and placement of huts in the show conflicts with possible reality. The huts were just where they needed them to be for each episode and the island had whatever geography was needed for the episode, the size and shape of the island varied depending on what was needed, or from where it was viewed.

Oh, I know how no map can properly show exactly where everything is/was because it WAS a fictitious island setting. I guess what I was looking for is what could be considered a "reference" map of the island. But, no biggie - just wondering how "correct" the layout would be if it was ever an actual place. 😉

I recently re-watched the series to figure out the hut formation. It was on rare occasion that they actually showed 2 huts in the same shot (showing which huts are next to each other). From what I figure, the 4 huts are in a circle with the dining table in the middle: Going clockwise: Supply Hut (where the Professor sleeps) Howell Hut Girls' Hut (Ginger & Mary Ann) Boys' Hut (Skipper & Gilligan)

It's all over the place. The hand drawn maps show from the perspective of standing on the shore of the lagoon and looking across the water, the channel leading out to the ocean would curve left. But on the show, I believe the channel curves out to the right. The space shot is totally off as it appears that there would be a view of the ocean from the lagoon, which there is not. But the space one kind of looks more like the island used in the titles.
