What I like about Rick Steve is that he is so positive about the people and places he presents. At a time when we're all becoming very suspicious or each other, Rick still shows us as common people, with hospitality towards visitors, pride in our customs, and more in common than differences. Thanks Rick.

I've met and known many Turks who had Albanian, Bosnian or Georgian ancestry (which explains some of the more European or Caucasus looks), and I even knew one who Arabic and looked completely Arabic, but only knew and spoke Turkish. Looking back even farther, the Turkic tribes from the steppes merely conquered (and mixed) with a pre-existing population that already had a mix of Greek, Phyrgian, Hittite, Armenian, Galatian (Celtic), and Medean (Kurdish) strains.

Your city is beautiful! I've travelled in Turkey extensively, but never to Izmir...until last June. I loved it and kicked myself that I hadn't visited earlier. I liked the Agora, Alsancak, Kordon, Karatas and the Asansor, Kemeralti, Kadifekale, Karsiyaka, and of course the side-trip to Efes ve Selcuk. I only had six days exploring Izmir and it wasn't nearly enough. I've been to other regions of Turkiye (Trakya, Konya region, northeast, Bursa, Istanbul), but just something about the Ege pace of living, worldview, cuisine and history really gets me.

I spent a semester as an international student in Konya. It was my first time in Turkey and really allowed me to experience this side of Turkiye outside the tourist areas. It was definitely more "conservative", although there were some areas of the city not quite as much....After this, I got to know Istanbul in depth (including staying there three months in 2015). This last June (2017), I stopped over in Turkey again while on a trip to Avrupa, and this time visited Izmir. Its a shame Rick didn't show much of this beautiful city. I spent a week there (including a side-trip to Selcuk and Efes) and was astounded at the sites, stories and especially the Ege pace of life.

We only went for a week but felt it wasn't enough time to experience all the tours and things you could do there. The hotel we stayed at (Fortin Hotel) had tiny rooms (especially the bathroom) but they were a joy to stay with still and gave us a warm good bye so I felt like I didn't want to leave. The men can be over friendly if you're two single girls though lol so watch out for them.

Ephesos was an ancient Greek city and It was built in the 10th century BC by Attic and Ionian Greek colonists. During the Classical Greek era it was one of the twelve cities of the Ionian League. The city came under the control of the Roman Republic in 129 BC....It was not a Roman city!

We did Kusadasi as part of the Greek Island cruise and went to Ephesus which was awesome. I've seen Antalya, Izmir and Konya when I visited Turkey for the 3rd time

This is the trip we took from Athens to Ephesus. I enjoyed Steve’s tour here even more.

@@annbush1826 Yes Steve does an amazing job with his travel programs. We started from Athens (Pireaus) on Monday for a 4 day cruise, first stop being Mykonos, then Tuesday morning we went to Kusadasi and a tour around Ephesus, then back on the boat to Patmos. On Wednesday, we had a whole day in Rhodes, then Thursday morning we went to Heraklion in Crete then finished off in Santorini and observed the sunset there. Is this the same one you did?

13:05-13:56 Pamukkale looks SO very beautiful and relaxed! The background music no doubt proves this. This could easily be one of my absolute favorite sites in the Mediterranean.

Pamukkale is not in our Mediterranean region. in our Aegean region
