Ricky and Gordon ARGUE! | My Friendly Neighborhood Scene Animatic

Recently took a look at the full release of the new survival-horror game My Friendly Neighborhood, and I have to say I really enjoyed it and its characters! When I saw this particular scene play out in the game, I really wanted to make a rough animatic of it from a new perspective and style since I really liked the interaction between these two characters! Please take note that this was my interpretation of what Gordon looked like, I have no idea what his actual appearance is 😂 Hope you guys like it!

Oh man, I love how expressive this is! Especially with Ricky switching between using his eyes expressing emotion to that dead pan 1000 yard stare he normally has. I think Gordon's design is great, with the Popeye arms and pie-slice eyes. The hip area looks a little weird to me, like maybe it needs more height to the oval, but I have always found that design aspect of Rubber Hose cartoons to be a little weird so it really could just be a me thing. The timing of the camera changes were great too! Overall, very lovely work!

OMG THANK YOUU I APPRECIATE THAT SM!! Yes I definitely wanted to give Ricky that level of expression between actual emotion and googly eyes 😂 As for Gordon, I'm so happy you like the design! It was loosely based on a few visuals and hints throughout the game, and I completely understand the hip situation, I think it looks a little strange sometimes too but I just went with it LOL! I pictured him as a grizzly veteran who happen to let himself go a bit once he became a repairman XD Thank you for your observations, means a bunch! 😁

@@CaptainCretaceous91 That's not a bad descriptor for that style but the Pie-Eyed design features that "cut" in the eye as its supposed to represent the radial light reflection of the eye. It was a staple of Rubberhose and/or Inkblot animation.

The fact Gordon has such a trigger finger definitely implies he fought in the war himself

He has a Purple Heart hanging in his truck, and he says he got it for his role in the war if you click on it. So yeah, you're essentially playing as a traumatized Vietnam veteran.

This is a great animatic!! I really like how you drew the emotions of Ricky and Gordon. Ricky usually has practically no emotions in the original on his face and he expressed himself only with movements and sometimes with his eyes, for obvious reason of course, but here in your style I could see the whole spectrum of his probable emotions in moments of animatics. I also like the way you portrayed Gordon! Good job, Mellow! :3 I'm just getting to know this game ":)

I seriously cannot thank you enough for your kind words!! 😊 When creating and designing Ricky and Gordon here, I DEFINITELY wanted to give Ricky more emotion along with his deadpan expressions since I thought it would help the scene a lot more and make him more fun to look at! As for Gordon, I have a naturally cartoony style and wanted to reflect that in him with his design to offset his tough-guy attitude XD Thank you sm again!

Ricky's a real interesting character to me, mainly because it's pretty clear he's written to have his own bias and be passive aggressive but in a way that feels less like he's TRYING to be a jerk but more that he finds it frustrating to engage with Gordon and yet still wants to help. Which fits for a puppet who's really only used to engaging with seemingly cheery positive people in a more controlled environment. Really shines through when it's clear he's being a bit pushy on Gordon just cuz he's desperate to get things back in controlled not so chaotic and more positive state after stuff at the studio has been shaken up so much. Probably why he tried to get the signal back on, and interrupt the news. He was probably hoping that'd get the attention of anyone to at least come to the studio and hopefully get things fixed around there after it's been left in such a messy state.

I think my favorite thing about MFN is how Gordon does not question the walking/talking puppets for even a single second. He's out here just arguing with a sock XD

This game has interesting world lore. "The War" Gordon refers to in this game is known as the "Northern Wars," so I can only speculate that it's their version of the Vietnam War. Especially since it is considered the first war on public television. We can only speculate just how bad the war was, since we're only told when it ends _(although since it's meant to be the Vietnam War, we can say it's probably really bad)._

It takes some real skill and attention to make such a cartoony character look so... Genuinely disturbed, and frustrated. Usually the only way to push these kinds of designs to heavier emotion is to make them look more realistic in some way, break out of the cartoony territory, but that runs the risk looking really, really comedic, rather than serious. This, however, manages to keep the design cute, silly, expressive, and carry nuance in those cute and silly expressions. You can genuinely see the underlying exhaustion, dread, anger, and trauma in a guy that looks like THAT. I also love the way you depicted Gordon's hand trembling, before he lowers the gun. Must not be pleasant for a veteran to use even the silliest firearms. Especially when you shoot someone who you know doesn't want to hurt anyone. Great job all around.

Yes I did!! It was one of the only visual reveals as to what Gordon looked like in the game, so I designed his face to look very similar to it!
