I think Colbert misunderstands what it means to not like fantasy. At least, for some people, (well, OK, me), it's not that for us, everything "has to be real", but it's just not very interesting when reality gets suspended, because when everything becomes possible, nothing is a surprise. As an example, plot twists are meaningless when they're achieved by fudging what's possible. To me, it's a bit like inheriting too much money and going shopping: it's no fun anymore when you can just say "I'll have everything in the shop"

@@Gottenhimfella I guess it does take a bigger step to suspend your disbelief enough to be invested in the fate of Hobbits and Dwarves and Elves. Before I read Lord of the Rings, I was very sceptical about it - all the goofy sounding names and places... how could anybody ever care about Aragorn, descendant of Isildur, wielding the sword Andruil to defend Minas Tirith? It sounds bonkers, I do recognize that. But then Tolkien came along and somehow sucked me in. Because yeah, it's all made up, but with so much love and effort and detail that you can FEEL this universe living and breathing beneath the pages. And before I even realized, all the ridiculous names meant something to me and felt honestly more like history than the word salad they look like. And obviously, a fictional universe also has rules that you can't just break for a random plot twist (unless it's just a bad story, that happens in every genre). It needs to be consistent and believable, and that's a lot harder than it looks.

Most prominent atheists/scientists don't debate theologians with great relish, since refutations of all theistic theological claims can easily be found in existing debates on YT. It just gives them the oxygen of credibility to be on the same stage as, for example, Dawkins. All theology is pretty much based on text. That is the first problem. All text is written by humans. And often by humans merely transcribing what other humans wrote years after the alleged events being described. What would have given the Koran or the Bible or the Torah some supernatural cred would have been if it has said something like "I say unto you, pestilence comes not from evil spirits or sin but creatures too small for man to see & numbering more than the desert sands." (Dawk) or some profound mathematics that no human could have known then.

Being from the UK, i have been a fan of Ricky Gervais for a few years now and have seen him live 3 times. I have only recently started to watch Stephen Colbert and find him to be very funny and entertaining. Not often British and American humour mix so well.

Well let's see Gervais write a book and see how he compares to the intellect and popularity of Tolkien. Tolkien was writing a mythology, not a statement of fact. Read the multi-layered intricacies of Tolkien, and you'll realize what a low grade pleb Gervais actually is. His only talent is to smugly take the piss out of everything, which, ironically, takes little talent.
