Arnaz eventually left Cugat's band to form his own orchestra, further intensifying their rivalry.

Better sit down if you're standing because this will be shocking. The Xavier Cugat reference was a JOKE inside a script, probably suggested by Desi himself. The Cugat reference popped up a few other times, too. It was funny because Cugat was mean and cheap to employees like Desi, and Cugat never attained the fame and massive wealth of Desi. So this was the opposite of hurtful, it was gleeful one-upsmanship.
