This brings back memories. Did basically the same thing at my last job. They really did go with the whole "family" thing and that was going to put me at over 60 hours for that week so I politely declined and it seems they took that personally so on the next day my day off I got a surprise call letting me know not to show up on Monday. And to this day I still remember the last words I heard on the phone before I hung up " we decide when it's your work day and off day " and jokes on them found a better job 5 days later.

They dropped the ball on two customers and committed that there would be people out there working, even though they knew they didn't have the man power to cover both jobs. Friday afternoon rolls around and they're in a panic trying to get people to work. No one said they would. They then pull the, 'Well, if no one says they'll work we'll just put teams on it and force you to work.' I responded with, "Good luck with that." as I shut my phone off.

Yup, applied and interviewed for a night shift position and got the job recently. Told them during the hiring process and it was in my application that I could only do night shift for them. Within the week they were asking me to cover day shifts. I said, if you got a night shift to cover, I got you every time but I told you I was only available during nights.

I’ve pulled the lighter line before and they all knew my ass was crazy. Even had a special lighter that had a flame that was anywhere from 8-12 inches which really helped when they were trying to call my bluff. Grabbed a bunch of old papers/reports that were from fucking 2004. I used to get that crap every time I booked a long weekender, ( Friday and Monday off) I eventually turned round and said they could buy my days from me, so that I get 2 days extra wages. When they said there was no extra or overtime pay, they just expected me to change the days I booked off. I just laughed and walked out the door, saying I'll see them on Tuesday.

A friend of our family passed out in the New York City subway. Luckily no tran was coming and he was taken to the hospital. They sweet talk you, guilt trip you, do whatever they can to milk a little bit more out of you for less, on the basis of helping out "family". Which is why I just don't work for family anymore.
