I drive a little VW diesel Caddy p/u...45mpg....10 gallon fuel tank...cheapest diesel around here is $5.29...avg cost for each fill up a week worth of commute is most of $50. Even THAT thing costs me ~$200//mo (a not-insignificant % of my take-home) to drive back & forth. If fuel prices can hurt even with THAT economy...imagine the poor SOBs paying out of pocket for full size rigs. I have a 50+ mpg capable VW beater 2-door HB but the 'lil is damn near impossible to beat in the economy//utility dept outside of an EV p/u. I take that back it IS impossible to beat since don't owe payments. A recent development has become something of a blessing. Only bright side out of it is that I have 2 separate gas work trucks...one @ the local yard & another at the main. Take care of the local area once a week or more-as-needed which is 16-mi round trip to reach. The MAIN yard is 85-mi round trip to reach. Engine in the main yard truck locked up on me a over a month ago (had all fluids...but its a hand me down from Public Works so has more time on engine than the miles imply). Got to a work site...got done...went to drive off...nothing. Had to get towed back. This has meant I've been using the 11mpg local truck for all the work-related driving...drive 8 miles to pick it up...park @ end of day...then 8 miles back home all 5x a week. This helps MY pocket...not counting other errands I end up using in a week what I'd usually use in just ONE DAY in the VW. At work I'm the odd one out w/ the longer commute & the boss even said during a prior unrelated instance prior to the main truck dying...that didn't mind using the work truck for all the back & forth anyway. Public Works gets to take their trucks home & in my dept everyone lives 10min or (much) less away & just make the drive in.
