Electronics guy here. I recommend looking at the power input specifications of all connected gear. Some units will draw more power in different working conditions. When on stage at higher temperatures, it might get narrow and a fuse in the supply might trip. I would always look at the maximum specified input current for each unit. That's the amount the manufacturer guarantees under the worst working conditions. If you have a pedalboard of that size and it's maybe easier to just get some AC/DC adapters with C14 inputs in brick shape (similar to the Avalon brick) and velrco or zip tie them to the bottom side of the board. Keep the Eventide for all guitar pedals and the equipment needing less power. Pro tip: Get AC/DC converters which can handle 230V/50Hz just in case you come over here to Europe one day ;-)

One tip is to drop some pillows or rolled up towels or what-have-you, something soft and fluffy, on top of the pedalboard before you close the lid to stop the thing from bouncing around in transit. Also, you might be able to get a converter from Cioks that steps the voltage down for your Avalon. Nice video! I totally share your joy about things like this. ALSO: since every building has varying degrees of power quality, some being very dirty that can lead to gnar noise or possibly even fry your gear- I'd recommend bringing a decent surge protector along. Doesn't have to go in the pedal board case, and doesn't need to be a pricy power conditioner. I've taken to using one from the hardware store ( runs around $40) that has a fuse built into it which will knock off if a surge comes calling. Heard too many sad stories to mess around.

The risk is that you set the wrong setting and deliver more volts. Other than that there is no other legitimate risk. It either works or doesn't. As far as ground noise goes... Maybe. Doubtful if there isn't already noise from the eventide box then there prolly won't be additional.

I did this exact same thing with a Novo 32. At first I used it as a pedalboard for all four channels of an Akai Timbre Wolf for dynamic panning, then I sold the TW and re-populated the board with a Microfreak, Blofeld, Werkstaat, Volca (all same footprint), Kaoss Pad Quad, 2 Kaoss Pad mini's, and 5 pedals. I have to unplug everything if I want to put it in the case now, so it sits on my keyboard stand. The amount of desk space I have saved by planting these smaller pieces with velcro is priceless. I can link up other pieces of gear in the studio to the effects units on the periphery, and the Microfreak acts as CV for the Werkstaat and MIDI for Blofeld simultaneously.

Did this with my setup years ago after I had to help my friend evacuate his studio when some California wildfires threatened his home. Used gators 88 key tsa keyboard case with wheels (internal dimensions 4ft.8in width by 19in deep) that’s for some specific giant keyboard. Reinforced it by gorilla gluing the top and bottom with a fitted smooth brown hardboard panel. Then double sided gorilla taped a series of aluminum hinged laptop stands to hold the bigger gear like my sequencer, mixer and drum machine. Which freed up the bottom for 7 synth modules a sampler(blackbox that I use for mostly recording) and 9 guitar pedals. All placed with 3M dual lock tape. I used a 4ft long 16 outlet workshop power strip in the lid at its bottom. Wired it with hundreds of edged to edge self adhesive wire clips for zip ties and routed power cables first. Then routed audio cables (getting exact length was a chore. If I did it again I would just learn to solder my own, which would help with exact length power cables too), then midi from a through 24. And finally usb into an overhub. Still enough room to fit a very wide eurorack on the top of the lid if I completely lose my mind and smoke the eurocrack. I can power off the whole thing from the power strip switch, fold down the stands, wrap it’s power cable and final audio out cables inside, lock it and roll in less than a minute. Weighs a lot but I grew up lugging around a baritone saxophone, so it’s still manageable for just myself.

Looking at OT power requirements it is 12V DC, 2A (24W) and PowerMax is giving 12V 0.5A (6W) isolated (so outputs don't share loads?) OT manual says "Unit power consumption: 7 W typical," some some reports of peaks close to 20W. You might get away with things or it might glitch mid set and everyone will think it was intentional.

This is what I was getting ready to say. The voltage alone doesn't determine a power supply's ability to power your gear. Under powering your gear could lead to things not functioning correctly. Also, someone mentioned in another comment that you can use a higher voltage than what is called for. This is false. Match your voltage with what the machine requires. The machine will only pull as much amperage as it requires, so you can plug it into a power source that meets or exceeds what it is rated for. I've been looking for an isolated power supply that could power the digitakt (12vDC1A), moog Mavis (12v1.2a), and the microcosm (9v400ma). I've come up with nothing so far, so if you come up with something that works for what you're doing, I would definitely be interested in picking one up.

@@bradleydeandickson im actually having the same issue. I realized that my microkorg that i've been using plugged to a Ciocks DC5 needs 600mA to run properly but the max on the power supply is way less. I read that it may burn your gear or break something. Anyway, a solution that may come handy for you is the Cioks DC5 or 7. Works perfectly with your rig.

If you don't want to put sticky velcro something, sometime ziptipes an be a workaround. I just ordered a bag of 6in extension chords for wall warts so they don't have to get jammed onto a power strip side by side. One last thing, ordering rolls of velcro strips is a game changer for a bunch of things like bundling cables up, but since you can trim to length, you could in theory make really big loops to hold the avalon down on the sides maybe?

So, I have built something similair for my setup and one thing that always bothered me was that once you put down one row of synth boxes, the cables sticking out the back is preventing you from putting a second row of boxes there. I found an easy solution. You can buy this kind of rigid but lightweight foam, it is the same type that is used to furnish these types of instrument cases. (I'm not sure what it is called, because I got hold of a bunch of it for free, and it has lasted me for years). I'm talking about the semi-hard stuff, not the spongy matress foam. Anyway, I cut blocks or wedges out of foam, and use it to raise and/or angle the second tier of synths. Two foam blocks with a gap between them will let all the connections from the first tier pass underneath. The blocks get velcro on the top and bottom, so everything stays in place and everything can be re-arranged as needed. Another awesome thing I found, was a power strip with the sockets aligned side by side in-line so to speak, not one above the other, not angled, just in a neat row, spaced so that the ac adaptors all fit and stick out the same direction. This was just on the shelf of a random hardware store. I bought two right away but when I came back they didn't have them anymore. Keep a lookout for those, because they are gold.

Nice setup! Be careful not to bump into anything with the case though. The velcro will hold but the adhesive can let go of the synths. To minimize the damage if that happens, put the tray into the case upside down. That way the adhesive fails the synths don’t fall too far inside the case.

Pedal boards are for synths indeed! I build one myself from wood. Two stories with just enough space for cables, power, midi and USB hubs. Reason for all this: I want to be able to pick up the board, everything pre-wired, drop it into a case, go to the gig, pop it out, and connect power and audio out and be done. All this still has to look good, because the synths are in our living room (where I do not want an ugly flight case). Best 80 euro's spent ever! I did plan it out a bit better I think 😂

Would be nice if the Elektron gear had screw mounting holes in the bottom, as opposed to only the sides, that way all you'd really need is a thin wood panel on the underside of the pedalboard, screwing into that. Otherwise, I'd probably just fashion a couple wood or plastic shoulders for each side of my Octatrack/A4/MD, thick enough to support a firm connection from underneath. I'd love to have a few pedaltrains to turn into sliding shelves, one on top of the other-- Slide out the gear you need to use, then back into a protective enclosure when finished.

There's even the perfect holder for the pedaltrain available. Also the trick with velcro is: do not place it on the labels on the bottom as they will be damaged when you remove the velcro tape. That's especially annoying with serial number stickers. As for a 303 mono replacement: get a xOx bOx. Or a Norand Mono.

if anyone finds this interesting, i would have a look a Tomas Dolas's synth setup. He is the keyboardist of Osees and his rig is in a guitar case as it looks.

great vid! that makes me think: is there a similar solution to safely hide/attach all those psu's in the studio?

How adorable is the synth nerd setting up a pedalboard 😂 I’m feeling nostalgic somehow. Pedalboards are just plain badass that’s an objective truth.

Synth guy who uses pedals here - the first thing you'll want to get hip to is 3m Dual Lock. So much stronger than Velcro. It looks cleaner as well. It's what pro guitarists use 🤘🏼🤙🏼

Now that you've been doing this live hardware project, I've been curious about end of chain sound conditioning. How has the UA Max compressor been working for you? I have been working on a live setup with Octatrack and wondering if I should look into a compressor or something to go after OT.

Hey Ricky, I am working the Eventide PowerMax now but it seems I can't power the Syntakt because it has 12V 2A instead of 1A....... do you know the Eventide can manage the Syntakt?

Instead of Velcro, Zip-ties work well also on pedalboards. Velcro the power supply to the back.

Question: What is that chest thing with the drawers that pull out? I want one to help organize our studio/office. My wife will go crazy (in a good way) if I organize more with one of those. Also, once I got the layout fixed for my guitar pedalboard, I used cable ties to hold them all down.

Oh man!! The eventide is overkill!!! I'm interested to buy one... Could you please check if in the adapters given with the power supply is there one compatible with the model Cycles?
