Thanks for the thoughtful review. For me the big sticking point is that I already have black mist filters while the HDF build replaces the GR3x’s built-in ND. Yes, it stops being easily portable with the filter mount attached, but it’s more versatile overall.

I just bought a ricoh gr III. I did the choose not to take the HDF because I found the effect was very annoying and not aesthetic in my sense with direct lights. It kinda smooth the photograph which is great but imo it really too bad with light sources. Also, i prefer a nd filter over it because I like to do ICM with my camera. ^^ Anyway, Im going to put GA-1 adapter + filter to protect my ricoh from dust, even if it is a big larger and not pocketable anymore (still very little imo), it look like the best way to prevent it from dust ^^' And then I could put any filter I want on it :)) good videos, as usual !
@Kids11111Ай бұрын
If you were going to put a filter on it anyway, you could've gotten the HDF and put an ND over it. The HDF inside the camera is miles better than any mist filter (because it diffuses only the highlights, unlike mist filters that diffuse everything to varying degrees) , and external ND filters are better than the built in ND filter.

Filter wise, I find Cinebloom a tad too aggressive. For Black Pro Mist I find 1/8th the best or try a Glimmer Glass 1, anymore strength than these and its globally interfering too much. I think the GRIII HDF is doing a good job of keeping in line with that philosophy. You might also like the Tiffen Soft FX filters, they do more to reduce sharpness if that is what you're looking for. The thing I love the most about the HDF filter is the toggling of it on and off, so much better than taking filters off and on, and also that there is no ghosting from the filter as it exists behind the lens not in front. Honestly I think this is a very cool innovation from Ricoh here, I hope they keep with it. Be nice if they can work out a way to not lose the ND filter because of its existence tho...

The photos in this video are absolutely breathtaking! I gifted myself a Ricoh GR IIIx as a Christmas present in 2021, and I still haven't fully figured out all the settings. I've been photographing for quite a few years, but all my photos are just lucky shots with well-chosen compositions. I manage to take beautiful photos intuitively, but I'd love to delve more into the theory and understand how to apply the camera settings depending on the shot and my desires. I think that if I mastered working with my camera 100%, it would give me an incredible result in my creative approach to photos. Could you recommend an easy course or video for beginners?

The digital look / excessive sharpness is because the default 0 sharpness is misleadingly actually the 50% sharpness setting. -1 is the absolute highest usable setting, and -4 is no sharpening

@Kids11111Ай бұрын
Sharpness that is natural (like the GR) isn't what determines a digital look, absence of grain or unnatural grain does. There were plenty of sharp film cameras back in the day, people just don't remember them because most people used shitty film cameras with soft lenses back then.

Amazing! I’m looking to buy the HDF version but why exactly would you use an ND in this camera? For video? Or do you need in some ocasions to use the ND in very bright conditions? If you would like to use it wide open all the time, and a shutter of 250 is there any need for the ND? Thank you in advance

Useful advice. I don't have any Ricoh GR series and have been on the fence about it (one of them) vs the X100VI, which is, of course, a waitlist situation as of summer 2024 (like, 5 months wait!). Still not sure. I have had earlier X100 models so I am more familiar with it and its output. I don't see that the HDF filter is entirely perfected because in one of your examples it looks like the camera plus Cinebloom is sharper (away from the bloomed areas) comparitively.

here is my take .. So..... here are Positive Aspects: Image Quality: Many users appreciate the quality of images, especially in black and white modes. The HDF filter is praised for its unique effect, particularly for those who enjoy a soft, dreamy look in their photographs. Portability: The camera is noted for being compact and pocketable, making it a great everyday carry (EDC) camera. Innovation: The ability to toggle the HDF filter on and off without the need to physically remove a filter is highlighted as a significant convenience and an innovative feature. and here are my .. Criticisms: Excessive Sharpness: Some users have mentioned that the default sharpness setting might be too high, which could affect the desired aesthetic. HDF Effect: A few users find the HDF effect too strong or kitschy, particularly in bright light conditions. There's also a preference among some for a built-in ND filter over the HDF feature. Autofocus: One comment mentions that the autofocus on Ricoh cameras, in general, might not be the best, which could be a concern for some users. The big Wrap up .. Conclusion: The Ricoh GR IIIx HDF is generally considered a great camera, particularly for those who value portability, image quality, and innovative features like the built-in HDF filter. However, it may not be ideal for everyone, especially if the strong HDF effect or potential autofocus issues are concerns. For those who already own the original GR III or other similar cameras, the decision to upgrade might depend on how much they value the new features like the HDF filter.

I have the camera and the effect is kitschy, over the top. They should have gone with half the intensity. I would have much preferred it if they had implemented a 1/8 or even 1/4 black mist type of filter. I'm experimenting with it to find the right balance in images that can benefit from the effect.
