I have tried plenty of cameras during the years, but the simplicity of this GR project, now I own the GR III, is incredible. I like so much its simplicity, I took one hour to understand how it works and then start to shoot. Then of course I like the 28 mm length so it is a plus to me. Excellent image quality. But overall really pocketable so I can really have it always with me, it is even smaller than an iPhone...about the amount of lenses...it depends how you want to shoot...there are plenty of photographers, overall in the past, that used just one focal length for all their work life.

Very nice image. These GRIII files are stunning. I own an RX100mkIV and the quality of image is far from what I'm getting with my Ricoh. Fix lens, no viewfinder, niche camera but when you look at the pics this camera is simply amazing. Minimalist tool.

Agreed, good pictures if Matt was new to the GR. Viewfinder and a good wide adaptor available. Setting up the 3 U settings can bring in a lot of versatility and the availability to have auto ISO with manual also very useful for street with variable lighting. Highlight weighted exposure available, and lots more. I was impressed with the Sony RX100VI video.
@andreasbuder4417
@andreasbuder4417 5 жыл бұрын
Apart from your other points: The Ricoh is actually substantially smaller than the RX100 IV. That is to say 10mm thinner, which matters a lot for true pocketability. And that is kinda the point: ultracompact, max sensor, sharpest lens ever, efficient IBIS. No rival in sight, except you need zoom (beyond 50mm) and/or special features.
@andreasbuder4417
@andreasbuder4417 5 жыл бұрын
@Bobby Brady Well, 10mm in depth matter very much for me, but 10mm in width rather not. I just stated this point for the reader, not to doubt your choice, the RX100 5 is a great camera.
@andreika6681

my rx100 mk5 is atrociously slow to start and same slow to stop. you can't do street action photos with it unless you keep it booted up, sux. i use more x70 or gx80 with 14mm f2.5 (also a very compact config) now for street walks, but keep rx100 mk5 anyway for zoom & evf & smaller size & great fps+buffer (sport) ... iq of rx is pretty crappy if you're used to a decent dslr's iq. i'd go only with my full frame nikon to cuba, it soo safe (still, guess after they switch to capitalism completely in a few years it may become 2nd miami again) and people are easy to shoot (and 3/4 of pretty grils in center would stop and pose anytime too :-) , don't waste your chances shooting with a lousy cam there, maximize it
@andreika6681
@andreika6681 4 жыл бұрын
sure, i'm more or less ok with rx100's iq too, some smarphones start to be almost as good. it's just cuz i'm 100% stills and gr III's IQ is really cut above sony's one, i'd be ready to pay, say, extra 100 and trade my rx for gr... better IQ will count for *my* eyes in 10 yrs on a 2 times bigger screen... it's actually possible now, i already see 2nd hand 500€ gr III popping up (i'm in france) and a mk5 should be still sellable for 400... i'm waiting till corona hits us to its max, if my job survives i'll let my GAS to ease out a bit in a couple of months...

Love the Ricoh GR3 - I've made it my go-to travel kit along with the ipad (with USB-C card reader because the wifi is poo-poo) and have paired with a profoto air remote as well for more testing. It is a really funny looking set up and from what little testing I've done will sync up to 1/800th (far from the fuji x100 series - but to be expected with the size). Great seeing you out and about in Cuba to put the camera to the test.

The EVF and Flash were removed according to Ricoh engineers because they needed to fit a bigger more efficient drive motor in the body and still keep it Street ninja compact and discreet. They explain that their line of GR’s are not inflluenced such as other camera manufacturers to popular demands shaping their next generation designs such as flippy screens and bells and whistles. They stick to they own belief to produce a solid performing, durable and smallest pro compact street shooter that fits in a pocket available. I believe Porsche has the same passion In Keeping with their legendary products.

Every photographer with a bulky system should have a small get and go camera they can hand hold to do test and preview shots. My bulky system is Nikon. My small get and go camera is a used Sony a6300 with only a 20mm pancake lens attached to it. I like Sony’s a6xxx camera body design specially its clean top plate. No protruding iconic viewfinder head that’s present in almost all cameras out there. I might also like Sony’s new a6600 model with its larger grip and bigger battery. Also, it’s top plate is sturdier with no built-in flash that I seldom use in my a6300. When the a6600 hype and price settles down I might get a used one from eBay.

@@glenhar1225 Let’s celebrate neoliberal capitalism for the amount of time left before it collapses human civilisation. I’ve known for 50 years (since I was 20) that capitalism is not compatible with long term sustainable life on this planet. Now, unless there is radical change, global warming, ecosystem collapse, resource depletion will start the collapse this century. I am reasonably well educated and have read all my life, including books on economics and climate. There is one ineluctable fact that anyone can see: you can’t have infinite growth in a finite system. Capitalism isn’t sustainable as it cannot survive without growth. Hence, unless we radically change our systems of government, we are doomed to collapse sometime this century. It might be catastrophic or it might be gradual but I think, in the end, it will be nasty. Matt Granger. I’m aware there are a couple of famous black and white photographers that use a 28mm focal length, but there are also some who prefer 50mm or 35mm. Though it’s a matter of personal preference, the parameters of black and white photography does impose some compositional limitations. For example, if the focal length is too wide in this type of photography, it makes the compositional elements and features cluttered with other elements and it detracts from the image. Just my opinion :)

Somewhat lazy criticism. Complaining that it doesn’t have all the specs, like the Sony camera you are mentioning, is missing the point of the design. You can apply that logic to anything “if only it had this this this”, but it’s kind of missing the point don’t you think? It’s a bit like complaining that a salad is not a pizza “I would have liked it more if it had tomato sauce, salami and cheese on top of thin bread”.
