Ricster Diaries Episode 82 - The Lake District | 20/02/2024

Filmed on 20/02/2024. So, it is time for another outing before the end of the winter blues and the beginning of Spring. This time, we venture off to the Lake District for the first time in years. Starting the journey at Scarborough, we catch the 05:48 Transpennine Express service to York vice Leeds. This service terminated at York due to route upgrades between Leeds and Dewsbury. At Leeds, we then changed for the 07:24 Northern service to Wigan Wallgate which diverted via Bradford Interchange due to route upgrades. Once at Wigan Wallgate, we transferred across to Wigan North Western for a few hours and a decent spotting session. Former Neville Hill based class 331/1's has been transferred across to North West in place for the new retired class 319's.
Next, we then went to the second and final station of the day of Lancaster. We caught the slightly late running 12:35 Avanti West Coast service to Glasgow Central as far as Lancaster. This is worked by 390/0 of which by the time of filming was one of very few which is yet to be refurbished in due cause. Lancaster provided a few surprise of double headed class 68's on a freight working and even a Nova 1 which also made an appearance.
Then, we then went to explore the town of Windermere. We caught the 15:23 Transpennine Express service through to Oxenholme Lake District of which we just made or connection for the 15:37 Northern service to Windermere. After a short sharp shower, we made our way to the lake where the views are mind-blowing. The backdrop of the Cumbrian Mountains and for what is one of the biggest lakes there is of 10 miles round.
Finally, the journey home. We catch the 18:03 Northern shuttle service to Oxenholme Lake District worked by a class 195 unit as it does a few round trips between Windermere and Oxenholme Lake District. Next, we then caught the 18:35 Avanti West Coast service through to Preston via Lancaster. At Preston, we then caught the 19:45 Northern service to York via Bradford Interchange and Leeds. Timing was very tight prior for our connecting service 22:03 Transpennine Express service to Scarborough. Although, we found out the unit we were supposed to have 185128 had failed so we had to await for the ECS movement from Darlington which was worked by a pairing of class 185's. The train split at York for Scarborough which the train ran 19 minutes late. But, made for a more interesting journey home.
