Not sure what happened here but take a look at this chain and hitch failure.
Check out the video I mention on a model that's in much better shape.

Looking at the sign on the coaster, I first thought it may be Cyrillic (that mirror image R is a letter there), but at a second look revealed that it is mirrored. The signs seem to be in Spanish. Now Spain, being part of the EU, has regulations for fairground rides which are comparable to what I am used to here in Germany (with some exceptions like the infamous stand-up version of the Rainbow), but this certainly doesn't look like it. So my guess is that it must have happened somewhere south of the US. This ride may not even be made by any manufacturer that we ever heard of, but welded together in someone's backyard. Years ago, I watched a documentary about a small traveling carnival somewhere in South America, and they showed that their Pirate Ship ride was also just made by someone who happened to own an arc welder.

Oh god, these are the type of incident you don't want to see out there. This must be a maintenance issue, my guess is that the chain broke and the jolt of stopping either broke or pulled loose the coupling. The coupling might have been poorly secured (to big of a bore/bush perhaps)? I think I see a safety cable come loose when the hitch breaks. Man these guys sure look they have no idea what they are doing, but context may be missing here.

At about 1:46 where you begin to run the footage slowly, there's a little tiny puff of smoke or rust or dust that appears from just below the bottom part of the hitch and quickly spreads out to the left in a few frames. I'm just guessing something percussive happened, or something broke under tension. This is before the hitch let go. Could that be the chain breaking? Progressive hitch failure. (r maybe it's nothing). I'm no ride mechanic but I know that sometimes those little ghosts wreck everything.
@ryantheridemechanic
@ryantheridemechanic 4 ай бұрын
Could be. I do know when chains do break they get super hot where the failure is as it’s getting ripped apart. No real way to tell without the after knowledge of what exactly happened. But for a traveling ride I don’t think anyone would ever see it. That little thing you’re talking about, I saw it but had no idea what it is, smoke, could be grease or dirt fling off, maybe a cable or rope?

Do these kids rollercoasters not have an anti-rollback system in place? Also, I remember years ago when an Afterburner type ride had a massive accident (not the one that happened at the Ohio state fair) that was overseas, it turned out it was made from an unheard of manufacturer and I remember KMG made a statement that the ride in question had nothing to do with them.

Not related to the video, but had a question… I’ve seen videos of Expedition Everest operating without the cosmetic damaged track piece at the end of the lift hill before it goes backwards. Is there anything physically stopping a train from being propelled completely off the track if for whatever reason the booster wheels propelling it up didn’t stop? Same question for rides like Gringots at Universal in Florida where the track abruptly ends, tips down, locks into another piece of track, and releases the train. I imagine that a ride that is designed to stop a train from driving off a track is designed with a non-friction means of stopping the train. Like a physical barrier that comes in the way of the train proceeding rather than pinch breaks or drive tires. And if so, do rides that use high speed switch tracks, like Hagrid’s Motorbikes, have something that would prevent the train from careening off if the track switch failed? I know the LSMs would slow the train down to a stop before the switch, but in the event the locking mechanism that holds the track in place deactauated due to some PLC error (like a rogue solar flare that switches a bit), and the track started to shift while the train was only a few feet away from it, there wouldn’t be enough time to slow it to a stop if it was at speed.
@ryantheridemechanic
@ryantheridemechanic 4 ай бұрын
It’s a complicated answer but all track openings (end of track) have stops of some sort. Sometimes they are hidden (upstop track stop) others are guarded by controls and failsafes. It would be best to do a video on this. Would you be ok if I used you comment directly? I could summarize or wipe the user name out if needed.

There was a chainbreake on Lisebergbanan at my home park Liseberg in Gothenburg, Sweden. I did not se it, but i was in the park. Lisebergbanan is a schwarzkopf. Same model as Jetline at Gröna Lund that deraild summer 2023. The anti rollback faild as well cause of a designflaw i think. But they installed a "standard" antirollback after and it is still rundning and very popular coaster. I think there was a chainbreake on Gatekeeper at Cedar Point 2-3 years ago. Those are The 2 chainbreake i know about. But should not a anti rollback cache The train on the coaster in this video? Should not all cars haver anti rollback?
@ryantheridemechanic

Should!, but as far as I can tell, these older models had no anti-rollback units. Probably because they said it’s a small loft and no train to hit behind it.

Technically, Lisebergbanan (which is an awesome coaster btw) is a Zierer coaster, not a Schwarzkopf. The Schwarzkopf company was already bankrupt by the time this ride was built. But Anton Schwarzkopf worked for Zierer at that time, so it shares a lot of the visual appeal. Same goes for Jetline. It is said that Lisebergbanan was Anton's favorite out of all the coasters he was involved in.

Before finishing the whole video, let me guess what's happened in the first clip: So there's something happened to the chain lift power, causing the train stop. However, the "anti rollback" thing only installed on the first car, causing the heavy jolt to the whole train while the first train latching on the anti rollback gears. Therefore, the entire train (except the first car) disconnected and rollback all the way to the station... (Just purely guess)~
