Thank you for posting this, a lot of other channels really don't compare the "preload and lift" to the "manual lift" and it turns out I've been trying to manual by just doing really big preloads, which results in sore shoulders after too many attempts. Thanks a bunch for juxtaposing these techniques and also showing the red and green pressure dots at the vertices of the body/bike angles

Nice video. But looking at the bike it looks a bit small in size, which may be helpful with handling. whereas the new geometry of long reach and slack head angle (longer wheelbase) may be more challenging. What do you say?

@JeffLenoskyTrailBoss
@JeffLenoskyTrailBoss 2 жыл бұрын
By falling backwards.... on purpose. First off you shouldn't really lift your wheel that high to get on anything anyway but here's what I mean. Find some grass, put on some flat shoes and drop your seat. Practice going to far back with the intention of stepping off and you'll be able to do it safely. This will give you a good idea of what that balance point is. Also always keep a finger on the rear brake.

@@JeffLenoskyTrailBoss it is a black diamond hiking trail that is 4.7 miles long and composed of three sections. Not to doubt your skill, but I think some of the hiking climbs are way too intense to ride but I think that it would be awesome for sessioning by different features. I went to check it out on a gravel ride a month ago and only got as far as a very sharp rock garden 50 feet in. I kinda want to go back and look for some features that are just challenging enough but my dropper started leaking and I’m trying to get the warranty :( Anyways, it seems like it is up your alley if you are in the area and want to show off to some hikers :). Stay safe man!

I have no probs manualing drops but manualing on flat still taunts me. Actually it would b interesting to hop on the ol hard tail and see if the suspension is throwing me a little (not the best lockout on 7' debonaire...) My preload stepups are ok as well but the trailing rear is a little untidy. I can get away with it as I have 7' and a 2.5 on the back... but hopefully with a few more of your vids I can get my head around it... As for my head, I can go with the Weight back vs Accelerate forward... I find my brain wired a little different in its understanding interface... so often I will find a different way of looking at the same thing... Both Weight back & Accelerate forward are the SAME action, just looking at it differently... You could say the same about jumping... Try this.. stand in an open area, bend your knees and let the earth float up under you, then push the earth away from under you and it will float away then come back... Sounds completely stupid.. but "relative to you" this is exactly what happens when you jump. (wait, did I just push 6,000,000, 000,000,000,000,000,000kg?) I sort of discovered this when being taught to turn on Ski's... "Push your toes down and into the turn" 'What... how... uhhh thats really hard... hold on.. if I just lift my heels up & away from the turn... Hey I'm doing it...'

@@JeffLenoskyTrailBoss My brain sorta lives in its own little world.. but that works well for figuring things out differently to others. Made me good at IT support as I often saw a different solution to others... I'm also visual so like to give examples... means I learn vie youtube better than reading too... oddly I'm one of the few people I know that can understand manuals (the books not the wheelies... I'm less than mediocre on them) q8)
@omerpeleg
@omerpeleg 4 жыл бұрын
Those last 2 clips for the first segment are not preload and lift. You are manual lifting in those (downhill slopes). Your weight shifts backwards and behind the rear axle, no?
@JeffLenoskyTrailBoss
@JeffLenoskyTrailBoss 4 жыл бұрын
The most important thing on downslopes is to really creep towards the handlebars and then push off and then lift them. I do a better job explaining it in my how to drop video. Your butt might get near or behind the rear axle but it’s the preload that really slows you to lift the wheel. Make sense?
@omerpeleg
@omerpeleg 4 жыл бұрын
@@JeffLenoskyTrailBoss Not really. Aren't both techniques the same regarding the preloading? I see the main difference as what happens after the preload. After you preload you want to keep your weight forward really only on punch type obstacles so its easier to get over them (I'm sure there are other trail examples though). Otherwise for manual lifts you push down and then shift your weight backwards, which is the same as on the downslope drops you showed. Do you see a difference in 4:29, 4:33. or 4:36? They all look like manual lifts to me.
@JeffLenoskyTrailBoss
@JeffLenoskyTrailBoss 4 жыл бұрын
Omer I mention that on a preload lift you’re really loading into the bars. Imagine doing a push up and pushing up fast so you’re weightless at the top and can clap. On a manual lift of more about coiling up... bending your elbows so you can then scoot back and accelerate your bike forward. Does that help?
@phoenixeasyrider6026

Are all lifts performed with the dropper post up?
@JeffLenoskyTrailBoss

You can do them both with the seat up but it's MUCH easier with it dropped since you have more room to move around.

So you use the preload and lift when you want to keep your weight forward and setup to punch? I've been having trouble going from a manual and then getting my weight forward in time to lift the rear wheel and punch. Should I be doing a preload lift + mini wheelie, then rear wheel lift and punching my arms forward? Was trying to practice on some of the rocks at Schooner Trace in Brown County yesterday... it's sketchier in person than in your video lol
