Even as a 5'7" rider, this advice is spot-on. It's something I've been consciously practicing lately and it makes a huge difference. Like Rémy, I stand taller when it's tamer, to give my legs a break, but too tall of a body position (especially too far back) is a good way to lose control in steeper tech. (Speaking from hard-earned wisdom here, lol.)

Like Rémy, I stand taller when it's tamer, to give my legs a break, but too tall of a body position will make you give up control in steeper tech - speaking from hard-earned wisdom here, lol. It's natural to want to "back off" when things get spicy, but it's the worst thing you can do. Ben's technique for drops is so different from most - I assume because he approaches it as a racer: to maintain speed (I like airtime) - so much so that my son & I refer to it as Cathro-style.

The more I see tips such as these, it always brings me back to learning how to downhill ski. The techniques/principles applied to downhill skiing parallel that of mountain biking in many ways. I'm glad I learned them as a kid.

True! I say that all the time, and often when chatting with a friend who is a long-time coach in both sports.

Great explanation! One single thing that could make you a better rider is your body position. I still have to remind myself of it when riding, and it makes a huge difference. I hope someday it will be natural.

Could you PLEASE normalize the audio? The voice sections are so quiet that I had to crank up the volume, and was then greeted by a very loud crash scene scream and far too loud music. Just run the audio through a normalizing filter please.

So many coaches say keep weight over the bottom bracket and not on the bars for proper weight distribution, and keeping the elbows in to make the shoulder joint less vulnerable (like push ups). I do think there is a point of "too much coaching" where the tips and tricks are very specific and contradicting each other. Also how is hinging the hips and leaning on the arms "more efficient" and "using less energy" ? One would think the first position (more like standing) would be the more efficient one. (At least as long as the terrain is not too technical). As much I love all these videos with Ben (especially season 1 was amazing), this one feels off.

Again, for beginners, if on gentle rolling paths you have trouble keeping your head over the bars then it may be that the frame is too large or the neck too long. Right?

Oh man I am so confused now! 5 month rider here so relatively beginner. Remy Metailler explained in a video why one should be riding high on the bike and almost completely perpendicular to the ground. He says this allows looking ahead more and more limb movement for absorbing features. But now I see this video instructing to ride with the back parallel to the ground. Could someone explain to me each of these methods are correct and when? Preferably Ben, but anyone who has a good understanding of the subject, I'll be happy for their explanation.

Remy and Yoann both talk about riding tall via straight legs, not via standing up with your entire body completely straight. There is plenty of times that Remy has his centre of gravity low in his riding, but if the trail is smooth and there is nothing to deal with he is usually taller. kzbin.info/www/bejne/r2WXlIena8tpisksi=jDeZPsc1FVOJwF53 is the video you are referring to and if you go back to the first tip Remy says almost the exact same things as Ben. Also bear in mind Remy is not tall like these two guys.

Guys just some feedback about the video here... Please get a better handle on your sound volume! I couldn't hear anything, had to turn the volume way up, then there would be an advertisement that would come on and SCARE the CRAP outta me! And even certain scenes within the edit would just be much louder relatively, then the next would be super quiet. So please, edit your video, then put the volume of the final vid thru a compression effect or better yet a limiter effect, and that will even things out! It's hard to watch video's that can't have normal sound levels... :) cheers
