It was a wonderful ride. Went as a child and still remember it. Of course, I'm from a railroad family ...

Very nicely done. Very well put together with details and scenes of some areas, i.e. the service and maintenance areas most folks don't see when visiting the Cog Railway. A high quality video with straight A's for content, continuity, and scenic content as well. Too bad you couldn't make the summit....too bad they only run one coal-fired engine up the line per day.

Went to the Mt when I was on vacation in VT. If I had known how magnificent Nh was but I never had a chance to ride the cog.

loc have a dynamic brake? It is not possible to go down without dynamic brake!
@louisfavre048 жыл бұрын
The engine has a steam brake, i.e. steam is used to push against the movement of the cylinders and works similarly to the dynamic brake of modern diesel electrics. More important, the coach has its own manually operated brake so that the engine itself only has to brake its own weight.

The steam engines on the cog draw in air to use for breaking when they head down the mountain they actually don't use steam. Alos the engine and coach are only connected via the emergency whistle rope. On the way down the engine will be anywhere from 1 foot to three feet from the coach the break man control the speed of the coach so it doesn't push the engine off the track

No surprise about the weather up there in late October. August would be better.

Alternatively, you can drive up to Mount Washington with the car.

Not trying to be 'Debbie Downer' but the steam, speed and debris on the ground alongside the track all look unstable to me. Is there another way up?
@JeffDeWitt7 жыл бұрын
You could drive, but that railroad has been running since 1868 so I think any stability problems have been LONG since worked out.

I hiked it when I was 13. It was a 2-day affair.

I would much rather take the railway than drive..no guardrails on the Auto Road..
@royreynolds1083 жыл бұрын
The only passenger fatalities have been attributed to a sabotage event that derailed a loco and car on a turnout by a hiker. After that all trains stopped and inspected every turnout before proceeding. Turnouts were only developed by the owner while he was in the Army in Europe during WWII. Turnouts required 9 separate moves of rail structure to facilitate each change of direction. The movable sections of track as turnouts were developed after that.
