Thanks for making this! As a trail maintainer this grinds my gears, riding through the mud is the best way to keep the trail singletrack. Can't tell you how many times I've fixed widened trails and finding logs to choke them off with. I have a Rogue Hoe Rhino tool that's perfect for grading and digging drainage. Singletrack should be no more than 12" wide on smooth sections. If you really love singletrack then you'll ride through the mud and then come back and improve drainage or add some rock armoring. We can all make the trails nice and sustainable, just takes some time off the bike. And you'll feel a great sense of accomplishment for helping.

Take a few buckets of water out to the parking lot. Then take a plastic 0,5L bottle and poke a little hole in the cap and then use it to spray the bike with water. Then rinse with more water from the bucket and dry off with towel. Works great. I've also tried putting it in my shower but that gave a lot of mess to clean up afterwards.

I know right. I use a battery-powered "portable camping shower" outside the house. It works really well. Was 30$. It empties a bucket of water in a minute though so I usually need two buckets. Start with removing mud with a dish brush and wash/water the brush in the bucket or a smaller container as you work. Then wash the remaining loose mud off with the camping shower. Shower pump may not like dirty water though. Dish brush doesn't seem to scratch my paint but be careful with scrub sponges. Cover your bike in protection film as a winter project =))

Riders can do their part and just take a bit of time and fix the area to be rideable. Find flat rocks and build a stone path to ride on. Another easier solution if the rocks are too heavy to move by yourself, take fallen branches of at least 2-3" in diameter, broken into lengths no wider than the trail and lay them across, perpendicular to the trail on top of the mud. It's an easy way to keep the trail from becoming overly rutted and requires no tools, only some muscle to break the branches. Just don't break branches off living trees, use only fallen pieces.
@christopherhughes65195 жыл бұрын
Finally someone with something intelligent to say. Think about this, 5 people in a ride and each gets two rocks or two branches and the job has a temporary fix. Next ride do it again and again and it's getting close to permanent. You ride it you own it, no not the land but the trail.
@johnnydoe665 жыл бұрын

It also strongly depends on what your soil is made up of. Riding through wet sections of clay and sand trails of SoCal can do permanent damage to the trail, changing the way the trail drains, causing irregular erosion and eventually landslides that close trails permanently. Trails shut down for at least 3-5 days during and after rain for protection. Places like PNW and UK are OK to ride when wet since loamy soil holds up well, those areas are used to rain. Not all areas are created equal. People see generalized information online and treat it like gospel. Always check with your own local organizations before riding if you are unsure. I can't tell you how many people I see destroying local trails because someone on youtube or some forum said it's perfectly fine to ride in the mud.

Might not be a problem in America but in Australia (specifically southwestern Australia) we are told to go around puddles to prevent the spread of Dieback a root rot disease that spreads from mud in your tires and on the bike. There are also grids your ride across that shake loose debris you may have on your bike before starting a new trail. But if the trail is disease-free there's no problem with going straight through.

Sharing now. This is great stuff! It's VERY similar here with regard to puddles. The big thing is...if you CHOOSE to go ride the trails when there are puddles, then you have to COMMIT to getting muddy, and don't go AROUND the puddles in an effort not to splash mud up on your favorite kit. That's just part of the gig if you ride when it's wet! It helps DRAMATICALLY with regard to getting muddy if you wheelie through them, and obviously if you can bunny-hop them, that's even better. More of these Seth. Seriously. There is VERY little information on this type of thing online. I found ONE video of someone "nicking a puddle." A great follow up to this would be to show what a trail crew of preferrably volunteers under experienced leadership, would do to correct the puddles and "go around" areas that have developed.

Seth! Thank you for calling attention to the problems created by riding around muddy sections! I see mountain bikers do it all the time, and it does not sit well with conscientious hikers who also use the trails (of course plenty of hikers do it too). Not only does it damage the trail, it damages the relationship cyclists have with the broader community of outdoor enthusiasts. And this is not good as we seek access to more trails for cyclists. And as usual, you approach the problem with a "have fun - make the best of it" attitude! Another problem along the same lines you might want to address is the "excavator culture" of aggressive trail riding. This is exemplified in promotional videos from bike companies (like Evil Bikes). They love to show riders skidding the back wheel across raw dirt, stripping it off the underlying roots and rocks. They even seem to revel in the act with slow motion replays. Yeah, watch that dirt fly! This is anathema to volunteers who work to prevent trail erosion. Of course there are some trails purpose-built for aggressive trail riding, and that is part that style of riding. But bikers should be aware that it erodes trails and is, in general, something to avoid.
