E-Bike Question of the Day ⚡🚴 What features do you consider essential for a commuter e-bike? Let us know in the comments below 👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼
@DanBrim
@DanBrim 9 ай бұрын
1. Included rack, fenders, and lights. No rattling from any of these, rack should be capable of 30 pounds + (ideally more). The integration should not feel like an afterthought. 2. Weight under 50 pounds, if I'm going to be carrying it into and out of my apartment every day it needs to go up and down stairs 3. Hydraulic disc brakes. This bike would not work for me because of number two.

1. can it climb those hills 2. are parts available for it 3. is it well built & comfortable

What I’d like in a commuter/all-rounder: Enough torque to climb hills at a decent speed, ability to switch between class 1, 2 or 3 modes, enough energy to cover my commute + 50% just in case, full fenders, good brakes, tires between 2-3in and a decent suspension, bright rear brake-indicating taillight and front light with blinking mode, and I prefer a torque sensor though it’d be great if the display lets me toggle it into cadence mode when I get tired or tweak a knee, and rear rack with a minimum 25kg capacity, front rack and mounting points for multiple bottle cages or accessories. UL certification so I can store it in my residence or workplace. I still very much like my LMT’d, and the V2 has some nice upgrades despite downgrading the air fork and derailleur, but there are some really tough competitors out there now that more models come equipped with torque sensors, some of which have UL 2849 and 2271 certification. Their prices are a couple to few hundred more, but they come with rear rack, better lights and more accessory mount points. It’s good for consumers, but it’ll take more time to decide what suits you best. A few points in favor of the LMT’d: 1) It’s amongst the lightest of its peers, though that drops about a pound once you add a rear rack 2) The KD-218 display gives you more customization over the number of PAS levels and the amount of assist provided in each level than most (Thanks for pointing this out as some reviewers miss this capability) 3) The display also lets you display remaining energy how you like, % or voltage, and the mapping of the battery bar to voltage

@@onenikkione Reviews of similar models from competing brands can be found at this channel and its corresponding web site, but here are a few off the top of my head: Aventon Level 2 Euphree City Robin + and new Stellar Falcon Lectric XPress Rad Power Bikes Radster (Road and Trail) Velotric Discover 2 Electric Bike Report acquired Electric Bike Review, and the latter’s website has a search tool where you can apply filters such as riding posture, bicycle style, type of sensor, motor power etc. i haven’t checked to see if they’ve maintained it, and it only covers models reviewed by the site’s staff. It’s how I ended up choosing between my Ride1Up LMT’d and the Aventon Level when I bought my LMT’d back in late 2020. Micromobility Industries has a similar tool. They don’t review as many models, and it only covers models their staff have entered into their database, but it’s still useful for finding similarly-spec’d models you can investigate as you shop and compare. Read reviews of each brand’s customer service and technical support. Reddit has a specific forum for that. Google and Yelp reviews are also helpful. Read several reviews of varying star ratings to get a good feel for the support of the brand, not just the average star rating. Of the brands I listed, Velotric is the brand with the worst reputation for post-sales support. I’ve dealt personally only with Lectric and Ride1Up, but both have been helpful. From my experiences, I think the Ride1Up staff are more familiar with their product, and bikes in general, though the Lectric staff are also responsive and try to help, but if they aren’t trained or want to deal with an issue, they may simply not respond to it.

I've developed a medical problem and I can't drive for a while and I may choose to just not, it was scary. So I really NEED an e-bike to get to work and stuff. There are just SO MANY options and a lot of Chinese junk. Your reviews are amazing, I bought this bike yesterday because of your reviews. One thing I could suggest? Bike weight and wheel base specs versus public transport limits. It took me a while along with your reviews to find one that complies with Oregon's. Its like this bike was built considering the regulations because the wheel base was right at the limit and the weight without the battery was right at the limit. There were a lot of great bikes including Ride1UP's but almost all were too heavy or too large wheel base.

I think the Ride 1 Up Prodigy V2 is more of a competitor to the Lectric One. While the R1U bike is $400 more, I think the features are more 1x1 between these two ebikes. Something to look into...

I bought this bike a few days ago and it should be delivered tomorrow. Really like what I'm hearing in this review, except there was no mention of the seat. I bought an aftermarket suspension seat post already, but wondering if I should also consider an aftermarket seat? Any comments about the seat quality?

John here. Stay tuned for our D2 review, it should go live in the next week or two. My spoiler-free thoughts: I'd say they're different bikes for different preferences. The Discover has tons of features, while the LMT'D is beautifully simple. Their ride feel differs quite a bit too.

This may anger your sponsors but at end it would be great for you to briefly list the competitors in line with the model you are reviewing to offer people comparisons of other bikes that equate with this one and perhaps a comment which one you'd lean to.

Excellent review 👍. Is the bike pretty silent? I know the hub motor is going to make some noise, but is it at least a nice consistent steady like sound? Can’t tell too much from video. Also, is there any rattle from other parts of the bike? During your speed testing I could hear some noises that sounded like rattling or grinding or something (not gear shifting). It was very minor and only during some parts of the ride. An awesome and brief category to cover for future bikes could be some kind of “Noise/Sound Test” for when you’re riding somewhere peaceful and quiet like here in the video. For example: battery rattle, excessive chain chatter, creaking, etc..Anyway thanks for the great detailed and insightful vid, the tests are awesome 👍.

I was interested til i got to the end of the video where I learned there is only one size frame. I want a bike that has a regular size frame and a large size frame. I have a 34 inch inseam so I only want bikes that come in large frame. Do you know the names of any commuter bikes that fit this bill? Thank you.

Thanks for watching! I'd say the riding position and comfort are similar, but the Prodigy's mid-drive gives it a different feel. The LMT'D V2 also felt more powerful, but I don't think the difference is huge.

There was a slight issue with the LMT’d V1 I got in late 2020 where the headset components were placed on the fork tube in the wrong orientation (I assumed they’d be in the correct orientation, though it looked wrong to me). Once I flipped them, assembly went fine and quickly. They now include the tool to tighten down the lockring for the chainring, so it’s even easier than when I put mine together. I hand-tightened mine until I received the correct tool.

Check user forums for each brand and model. I have an XPedition. It’s great for its purpose, but it had/has several build issues, a couple which I consider serious, but correctable. The first is their kickstand kept loosening, potentially falling off while riding at high speed. Replacing their washers (split lock washer AND a flat washer, which negated the lock washer) with a wedge-lock washer. The second is their brake calipers allow the brake pads to overhand the rotors by a bit. The unworn portions of the pads can then catch the edge of the rotor, causing the pads to get ejected, leading to loss of braking function (you will hear a bang and then loud metallic screeching when using the affected caliper). I had to grind down the caliper spacers to get the pads mostly aligned (still not 100%, and I’ve run out of room for further adjustment). The other issues were minor, like noticeable misalignment of the bosses for bottle cages and the front battery mount. And the accessories often have worse quality issues you have to adjust to fit to the bike. I can’t fathom how either major design flaw made it to production, but hopefully they’ve corrected them on subsequent batches of the XPedition and avoided them on later models. In contrast, the calipers on my 2020 LMT’d are perfectly aligned. Aside from the fragile matte paint of that generation (matte finish paint is always more fragile than glossy), and lack of masking on the sides of the BB shell that caused excess paint to misalign the torque sensor bottom bracket, the build quality is excellent. From the recent plant tour video posted on the Electrek channel, it appears they’ve corrected the masking issue at the BB shell.
