I have had the x mount for awhile now, and have never used the rubber band. I have never had an issue. The quadlock looks like a better setup, but having to use their case is a deal breaker for me. I have to have a lifeproof style case for what I do.

If you visit the Quad Lock website they sell a high quality 3M stick on quad lock attachment that can be stuck to a external case. So if you have a specific case you don't want to sway away from. You can buy the locking mount and stick it to the back of your phone case. This then allows you to use quad locks full range of mounting options.
@dougabel46424 жыл бұрын
@@vlogcentral9303 I looked at the quad lock attachment, and unfortunately, it specifies in the directions that it will not attach TPU, silicon, or rubber - something many phone cases are made of. Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of the Quad Lock, but as Matt said, it's kind of a deal breaker in not being able to use the case I currently have. I personally have a Ram Mount X-Grip, and bought it over 10 years ago when I first got an iPhone 4. The mount worked great for the iPhone 4, 5, and 7 that I had; I replaced the X-Mount itself in November when I decided to upgrade my iPhone to the 11 Pro, which wouldn't fit in the X-Grip that I had. I still have the mount itself, but over time, I had to replace the rubber tips, as RIDE Adventures mentioned had wearing and fell off. I will admit that mine hasn't had problems in that entire time (except for the suction cup mount starting to stretch and fade - but it turns out that RAM Mounts have a lifetime warranty on it, and that's not the X-Grip itself being reviewed here), and I haven't used mine in an off-road, dirt laden, temperature changing environment such as those that RIDE Adventures guides and clients go through, so mine may not have gotten the same wear as theirs. :) I think both mounting systems have their pros and cons, as listed, and I like the idea of the quick lock, rotating system - but I would see the case as a deal breaker - and I would likely have to move it further in on my windshield in my car, so that I could twist it in and not hit the A-Pillar. Likely, this is not a problem motorcyclists would encounter, but it's certainly something to consider as another possible issue. The X-Grip works best for my situation; I'm glad the Quad Lock works best for the reviewer's situation. :)

I've been using the RAM MOUNT unit for 4 years now with all 3 of my bikes and I've never had any issues. I've taken a 5 country tour, used 3 phones and still have the original rubber bands. I can't see buying 2 or 3 more cases to use a quad lock that's probably going to destroy my camera anyway. I've still got the 4 rubber bumpers but even if I didn't I still have the phone case of my own desire plus the small rubber pieces can be bought extra. The only good thing I see about the quad lock is that it doesn't obscure the screen which isn't a problem for me since I've got a massive phone anyway... Lol. I'm riding on the autobahn every now and then so I'll stick with my RAM MOUNT :)

So I've been using Quadlock for a few years now and I love it. Although I do hate a few stuff about it. First off, I hate the fact that I have to have a dedicated phone case for it and each time I upgrade my phone I have to buy another case. I personally don't like to use the quad lock phone case on a daily basis since it's bulky. I'm a slim case kind of guy. So I would always have to switch cases before riding my bike, sometimes I would lose my case and have to look for it around the house since I don't use it very often. Another issue I have with the quad lock is, when you first purchase the case and mount, it would be rock solid and won't wiggle at all. After a while, there would be a significant wiggle when the phone is fully secured on the mount which will vibrate like crazy while riding and will lead to a broken phone camera. The new vibration dampening device is great but that isn't where the issue is, the issue is the actual locking mechanism. the teeth of the mechanism to lock both cases and mount gets shaven off over time, that's what makes it vibrate even with the anti-vibration attachment. I've switched to the RAM mount recently so I could just use one case and one case alone and wouldn't have to worry about the locking mechanism being loose over time. It definitely is a lot bulkier but it works a lot better for me.
@RIDEAdventures3 жыл бұрын
Interesting, as yes, that would be one major bonus that the RAM X-Grip comes with: The ability to fit a wide variety of case sizes and thicknesses. We've even reviewed the RAM Quick-Grip since this video, but that one might not handle thicker cases either. Thanks for sharing, good point.
@kb89403 жыл бұрын
You ever thinking of doing a project with the case. For example simce you have a few old quad lock cases why dont you take a dremmle and cut the locking portion of the case, round or square the edge and 3M tape the piece to the a case that you liken
I’ve been using the Ram Mount for about 5 years, I have never used the rubber bands nor have I ever lost any of the rubber corner pieces. But the Quad Lock looks interesting.

The biggest problem I have with phone navigation is using it during heavy rain. I rode a lot in South East Asia and tropical rains are epic. The rain would hit the screen and mess things up. The phones I had are highly water resistance so they did not break. They would just do odd things when rain directly hit the screen. I have started to use beeline and that seems to work well. I can put the phone away safely and simplify my navigation. I still have yet to use it on a long trip though...

Good reviews. I had a Ram X mount for a few years. For the first few years it was great. However, humidity was wearing into the rubber holders on mine and softening them up. Over time they would leave a black residue on my phone case, until one day on the highway doing about 80, one of the rubber holders fell apart and in effect my phone shot out of the holder. By some miracle I put my hand there in time and barely caught it. I had to pull over to put my phone in my jacket pocket. When I got home and inspected I realized all of them were melting like this and i got rid of it. I picked up a Quad Lock case, and while locking the phone on and off takes some getting used to, its as solid as a rock. I even got a mount for road and mountain bicycles when I ride and just ordered one for my car. Never going back to RAM

I switched from RAM to Quad, I like the Quad cause it is smaller when phone is not on it, you can get your phone off and on with one hand, you can flip it from verticall to horizontal. The bad, I can not use wireless charging, case just too thick. Case slides easily, wish it was more rubberized. It's not universal so a buddy using your bike can't use it unless he has a quad lock case also.
@RIDEAdventures4 жыл бұрын
Hmm, in at least the GMC Sierra shown in our recent video, wireless charging still works great with the QuadLock. Hope yours eventually does, too.

I contacted Rokform for a mirror stem mount, and they offered me a sport bike stem mount. Then, they said they don't ship to the UK. I found them very unhelpful as a company, considering I was ready to buy. Quad Lock for me now, and I cannot see any issues with it. They make a vibration damper, also, so there is no reason for phone damage. It works better than any other system I have tried, and they are a good company to deal with. I agree 100% with this review!

Thanks for the review! I'd love to be able to use Quadlock, but they don't make cases for the Huawei P20 Pro and I don't feel like trusting a piece of 3m tape that's on the universal Quadlock... Ram it is then!

That may be a point that Quad Lock struggles with over the years, constantly coming up with cases available for the ever-changing cell phone market. Oh well, if the RAM works best for you, enjoy.

I have an Oneplus which is also not supported by quadlock. I bought the universal 3m sticker one and stuck it directly to the back of the phone. Unfortunately my phone turned out to have a non-stick coating resulting in the sticker coming loose. Luckily this was on my bicycle and I could grab my phone while it was bouncing around on the handle bars. I've contacted Quadlock and they apologized and send me a new stick on universal mount. I've now stuck it on a non-rubber case for my phone and it is very solid. Have been using it ever since and it survived going over cobblestones while hardmounted on my racing bicycle so I would say it is solid enough. Just make sure you have a good case to stick it to

As below I had a quad lock case mounted onto the 1” Ram mount on my Zx10R but it’s caused damage to my IPhone XR. The camera does not focus. Emailed Quadlock whose reply was “the damage seems to be isolated to the camera image stabilisation mechanism of the phone and appears to be caused by the high level of vibration experienced on some motorbikes. Certain combinations of phone and motorbike seem more susceptible than others but we are still gathering information and do not have a complete picture at this time” as stated they are working on a Dampening system to rectify but buyers beware as it cost me nearly £100 to get the camera fixed. 2 others I ride with have different bikes, mountings and newer IPhones and they have had the same issue

Yes, this is my main concern as well. Bikes are known to ruin OIS cameras on phones. Quad looks superior in most aspects, but rubber on X-Grip probably has better vibration dampening.

@@benjaminlawrence2864, thanks. Not far off it sounds like from what most folks are doing. Still curious to see if any of these mfg's can come up with a solution to avoid all vibration damage. Now i'm typing this from my Huawei p30 pro. Luckely it was on sale. If you're planing to use the ram mount, make sure to always use the safety straps.. Clearly they're there for a reason. Fredrik, good tip and points. While sun exposure, dryness, time, usage of the rubber bands etc. all contribute to the demise of those rubber bands, over-stretching them probably accelerates that process. --- Careful out there, but have fun and thanks for the comment : )

You forgot to mention one of the outstanding features about Quadlock and this is why I love mine. It is very practical to use as your everyday phone case and is always good to go. The design is sleek and slides right into your pocket without fuss or bulk. Also , there's a variety of mounts so you can go from bike to truck dashboard with ease. Quadlock is so versatile and convenient. The rest of your comparisons are pretty good. Not sure I would highlight that Quadlocks plastic housing can wear out since you yourself mention there's no evidence of it.

I tested ram xgrip and stem mount on my GSXR. It does the job but ram xgrip is a poorly designed universal phone holder. It holds the phone in place but the stem mount is bad designed (you have to cut yourself the mounting insert to install it into the stem and it self destroys after the first turn of the nut...), does not lock in place and it touches the aluminum stem with the risk of scrathces. The x grip does its job but looks weak and woobly, the rubber holder looks like it is going to break only if you stare at it... I bought it and returned. Better consider other brands such as SP Connect or Quadlock.
@danieldemulder49034 жыл бұрын
I've used xgrip, but one big downside for me is how exposed is the phone to the elements. That will happen also with the quadlock. My expierience was the dust damaged the speakers and charging port prematurely, so i, decided to get the more complicated and ugly phone bag for safe keeping the phone on offroad.
@RIDEAdventures4 жыл бұрын
Indeed, neither mount does much for protection from the elements, and unfortunately, bags and dust protection has shut-down phones from getting to hot in the sun and overheating. We're probably not to far from a future of impermeable phones (hopefully.) Thanks for the comment, RIDE on!

Ram mount is an absolute pain. The x mount contact points always land on my side buttons making my phone go crazy and the elastic bands can barely stretch over my Note 10+ Takes a long time to get it unstrapped just to use it. Quad lock is the way to go.

I placed a strip of 10lb velcro on the ram mount's center bit (where the ram mount and the phone case touch) and on the back of my phone case/lap timer. The rubber band kept breaking and this was the best fix I found. No need to use rubber bands anymore.

Never forget that the “quadlock” holder transmits vibration direct (which the xgrip does not), so when you use the quad lock and your phone lose the capability to focus, as for example with iPhones and galaxys the camera lens get affected by the vibration as it literally displaces parts over time, then don’t get surprised you are not the first. Read forums from users more then common issue. Sad really but real deal breaker, as even the chance that it will damage your phone makes it fall out of options.
@RIDEAdventures4 жыл бұрын
Yep, such has been noted below, and Quad Lock folks say this is on about 1% of all cameras....definitely not exclusive to Quad Lock mounts though. They all transmit vibrations. Maybe some more than others, but all Users should beware.
