Hi Gabi, its good to see you doing well. I travelled that road from Mombassa to Malindi many times in 2004/05 & it was then all extremely bad like the first part. I stayed at Kalifi & Watamu beach resorts. I'm glad to see some things have changed for the better. Take care Gabi

As someone who splits time between Kenya and Italy, the people in Malindi don't understand that Italy is going through tough economic struggles and those tourists can't afford to travel all that way in the same numbers. Malindi is also paying the price for focusing on tourists from one country. That's bad tourism practice because they're subject to the whims of that one country. An Italian woman was kidnapped by terrorists from across the border in Somalia and that just crashed the industry.. In my opinion, it would be useless to try and get the Italians back, so marketing to other countries (which they're slowly starting to do) is the right decision. And it's working, Naomi Campbell recently bought a villa in Malindi. EDIt: Compare it with Diani in South Coast which didn't limit itself to one nationality and and now Diani is thriving and consistently topping the "best beaches in Africa" lists.

But I don't think Malindi focused on tourists from one country. It's the other way around. Tourists from Italy chose Malindi and the tourists themselves marketed Malindi as a good destination when they went back home, from the time of the San Marco Earth Observation station back in the 80s... Most of the Italian tourists who come to Malindi for the first time come due to recommendations from other Italian tourists not because of Kenya/Malindi marketing it as a destination for Italians....

Italians have a culture of supporting there own in hotels so they brought themselves here because of all the amazing stories and a lot of rich Italians built hotels they were one of the 1st European to arrive in that part of the coast if it was not for them Malindi would look like Mambrui

Best time to buy up those villas is now for a cheaper price. I can guarantee you malindi will bounce back. Once they expand the airport to recieve direct flights from abroad instead of people having to go to mombasa and travel another 100miles to malindi. Secondly, Kenya will soon be Visa free anyone can travel to Kenya without question just a passport and hope onto a plane and you are there. Malnidi is also beautiful am sure many investors once they are exposed to the place they can see the potential. Nice video though brings back memories of my visits to Malindi at the time it was mainly Germans visiting the place. But Kenya needs to open up Malindi by bringing more tourists especially from eastern europe who are now travelling in large numbers to Kenya but going to Mombasa and diani and some kilifi. Am sure a eastern european investor will come to Malindi and see the potential as a summer gateway for eastern europeans and buy up these properties and turn them into Air BNBs for their country folk to visit during the cold winter times.
