Nice review. I bought a brand new 2019 Silverado Custom Trail Boss double cab with 5.3 and 5 yrs later, not one issue. I love it more and more each day. I thought I would miss the leather, crew cab space, luxury features, etc., but I don't. It has everything I want and nothing I don't want. I might look at a Colorado Trail Boss in the future, but it would be hard not to get another Silverado or Sierra.

Thanks for your comment. I've also been looking at the new Colorado ZR2. I had a 2023 Tacoma TRD Off Road that I loved but wanted the additional space. But the Sierra, while a great truck, is just a bit too big for me. May end up going the Colorado route...and the new ZR2 might be just the right choice (especially if some of the local mark-downs I've seen stay around).

I have the identically configured truck, a 2023 model in the Copper Metallic (a color just discontinued BTW) and I completely agree with your review except for the transmission lurching, I haven't experienced that but then again you have a different version of the 8L90 transmission (it was updated for 2024) so it could just be a programming issue. I am also slightly hard of hearing in the low range but the engine doesn't sound or feel rough to me, but then again that could just be my ears are not as sensitive as they once were. You mentioned the rpms and I agree. I find that my driving style makes the vehicle very rarely crack 3000 rpms. One reason I bought the truck over the 5.3 is the fact that it will hold 8th gear going up an incline and just build boost to provide the torque instead of downshifting. Even though everyone raves about the 10-speed, I prefer this truck with the 8-speed because paired with the 430 lb/ft of torque, it rarely shifts at all leading to a very relaxing and quiet driving experience.

Thanks for the note. The lurching could be an after effect of the drive train rebuild from the main seal failure, but hard to tell. But like the other commenter pointed out…at least it has a 100K warranty. Have a great week.

Great video and cool little engine. One note on the v8s, there is a bit of lifter failure in those.

My 2018 GMC Sierra SLT crew cab Z71 consistently got 22 mpg highway on trips. And, it had 4wd hi, low, and automatic. Before I bought this truck, I test drove a Tacoma. For the price of the Toy, and lack of MPG, hp, cabin space and especially comfort, I didn't even consider it. Only thing I didn't like about my GMC was the 6 speed transmission. Hard 1-2 shifts and the transmission in park, in a parking lot would randomly clunk so hard that I had thought I had been hit by someone. And, I had the heated and cooled seats. The seats after about an hour driving became uncomfortable. I had a 2023 Ram Rebel, that had a better ride, way better seating comfort.....BUT, I never got over 15 mpg ever on highway trips, the mpg utterly sucked. Loved the truck, hated the gas mileage. So, I traded it for a new Mustang GT, LOL.

Let’s keep reminding people this engine comes with a 5yr 100k power train warranty from gm just like the diesel.

Thanks for the note. Very true and very comforting. Really takes most of the worry out of choosing this drive train. Have a great week!

I have a ‘23 Custom Trail Boss, and I agree with every point you made. For me, it appears the lurching is a major delay in the truck downshifting to 1st. I've had a few close calls when inching up to my garage door.

I have the same truck in volcanic red tint coat, love the truck, I had a 2021 canyon Denali, was ok but the full size beats it on every level. This truck ha everything I need and nothing I don’t, my highway gas mileage is around 24.5 mpg around town 19.7 nothing to complain about. I looked at all the trim levels and honestly didn’t need all the expensive extras.

Great point. This model is really well configured and I purchased it for very much the same reason. Everything I need with really nothing more that I want (or was willing to pay for). I still enjoy the truck quite a bit.

Loved that colour! My next truck

Thanks for the note. It’s a very unique color…lots of compliments and people saying they don’t see many/any in that color. Have a great week!

I have a Silverado in the same configuration and I agree with everything you said. Does yours sometimes shift hard into 1st gear?
@ridgereviews2 ай бұрын
Yes. Usually is the worst when the truck is cold, but it is not just a hard shift, but a VERY HARD shift which seems like it could long-term cause damage. Not the best, but it appears to be the way the truck is. Thanks for your comment.
@rolexshine923Ай бұрын
I noticed that if you start up the truck and just wait about 30 seconds for all the computer systems to settle it never shifts hard again, especially if the truck is cold try and give it about 30 seconds before you through it in gear

The wind can be a big factor in your gas mileage.
@ridgereviews5 ай бұрын
Thanks for the note. Yes, totally agree. Same trips but different directions into or with the wind can swing the mileage by 5-7MPG. It's always a consideration. Have a great week!

It is kind of like a hyper small dog. Sometimes the energy just comes out in an explosion! :D I have seen the "lurch" slowly pulling into my short driveway. Hasn't tripped me up yet.
@TuishimiАй бұрын
Personally, I find the engine and drive train to be very very good. I enjoy it.
@TuishimiАй бұрын
Also, this engine is, for its size, massively powerful. I, personally, don't expect it to have good mileage. So I've been getting between 18 and 20 MPG in mine and I am not disappointed. No long, flat, highway drives yet...

How good is this truck on gas in the city?
@ridgereviews6 ай бұрын
About the same as the 5.3L V8...roughly 14-16 MPG (as a running average). If you are driving in the suburbs (more consistent speeds, longer stretches of steady speeds, etc.) you can manage closer to 19-20 MPG. The truck is VERY sensitive to speed as it relates to MPG (more than any other vehicle I've owned). My MPG can swing wildly depending on how I'm driving a particular day. Someones I manage 21 MPG around town...other days 14 MPG on the same route. Sometimes 24-25 MPG on the highway, other times 19-20 MPG on the same route. But I guess the point of the 2.7L Turbomax is that IT CAN get 24-25 MPG on the highway, which the 5.3L V8 simply can't. Hope that helps.

These Toyota "1 ton" dually trucks remind me of my uncle. My dad and my uncle were partners in a battery business (sold everytjing from car batteries to commercial vehicle batteries to batteries for some solar systems) and of course bought junks to sell to recyclers. My uncle was kind of a shit head tbh and was backwards with his money saving priorities, he would go to $500 lunches but was super anal about fuel and demanded we always took the smallest truck, even if he knew it was too small for the job and knew we were going to severely overload it. One time he was driving I5 north coming out of LA and had probably 150 junk batteries on his little Toyota "1 ton" dually flatbed. He hit a horrible pothole and SNAPPED THE AXLE. Damn near killed him and took somebody else with him, the load shifted and he lost some batteries on the highway. When he called my pops to tell hin what happened by dad laughed at him and said "i told you so". My ubcle actually believed these things could haul a ton or more. Spoiler: they couldnt. These things were a joke and were sold to blind Toyota loyalists and people that had no idea about weight or hauling. Phisher Price should have sold these to children as toys and called them "My First Dually" 😂😂😂😂
