The first knot is called an Evank or Siberian hitch. The second knot is called a truckers' hitch. The truckers hitch is probably one of the best tensioning knots out there. Also the loop you formed in the line to make the truckers' hitch is essentially a marlin spike hitch, but you use the running end of the line as the "spike" instead of a toggle or spike. All this knot naming is from sailing and trucking by the way (except for the Evank, which comes from the nomads of the Siberian steppes). Ah the Prussic knot, from mountain climbing, or climbing in general. An actual Prussic MUST have a minimum of 3 turns but you can have as many more as you want although in practice 6 is the usual maximum, the more turns the greater the grabbing friction. If you only have a single turn the knot is a larks head or cow hitch, two turns is a double larks head or cow hitch. None of this information is essential as long as you know the knots, but it does make them easier to talk about. Also the Prussic is usually tied in smaller diameter line than the main line to provide grip. You cannot go the other way, if you try to tie a Prussic in larger diameter around a smaller diameter main line, it will NOT grip. If the two lines are the same diameter, the grip is only so - so therefore you need more turns in the knot.

@Jim O'Leary Well I was never a boy scout myself, but my dad was a sailor in the navy, and he started teaching me knots when I was about 3 or 4 years old.😁

Learnt something from you here. I'm aware of sources of knots such as fishing, sailing, trucking/wagoneering and climbing, but I wasn't aware of nomad culture as a source of knots. Cool.

Honestly, this is one of the best explained knot videos I've seen. Thanks very much for sharing.

Pro tip, tie your prussic where the knot end stays on the Ridgeline side and the smooth loop goes to the tarp. 1) its stronger 2) if/when you want to remove it, you can grab the tag ends of the knot and pull and don't have to pick at it the way you did. Just a suggestion.

This is one of the best videos on tying a ridgeline I've ever seen. Thanks man

I use the same set up as you did to tie up a ridgeline with one minor exception. On the truckers hitch you use to put the line under tension, I use what I have heard called a rolling truckers hitch. Instead of just going thru your loop once run your tag end thru three times. When you pull your line taut It bites down on itself and makes it where you have both hands free without having to clamp the tension with your hand. It also comes out really easily, you just give the line a snap back towards the center of the ridgeline. Not a huge deal but I like it. Maybe someone will find it useful. Great vids, love the channel.

In all the knot tying vids I've watched (n there are MANY), You are the 1st person that ever mentioned the difference bet a bite n a loop. I had to figure that out on my own. Your knot demo was the easiest to follow I've seen. Thank you, an 'easy' ridge line is very impt to me; esp cuz I'm a hammock camper. I must ask: bank line; braided or twisted? For all around camp chores, which do you think is best? Thanks again for an excellent vid. Stay safe, Be Blessed.

Cool video. I am fairly new to learning knots and after all the videos I’ve seen and knots I’ve tried, this is how I set up a ridge line also. I’ve seen the first knot called a Siberian hitch (or evenk knot) and the second called a truckers hitch. Both are easy to tie and even easier to untie.

The name of the knot you tied on the 2nd tree is called a Trucker's Hitch. That's what i use for my ridgeline as well.
@0808anwar2 жыл бұрын
for the first tree, you could also use a bowline knot and put the rope through it. cmiiw.
@PedalPlanet2 жыл бұрын
This is such a great demo thanks so much... 👏 do the knots have an 'official' name
@zoehancock Жыл бұрын
The hitch on the first tee is an Evenk Hitch, also known as a Siberian hitch. The hitch on the second tree is a Trucker's Hitch: it's the whole system that has that name and it provides you with a mechanical advantage to tighten the cord. The trucker's hitch can be created with different ways of forming the loop and differing tie off methods, this is just one way.
