Really liked your closing remarks about pick the the right tool, I have more than one platform because I liked the way a tool felt to me, and the work I was doing. Example, I use a Dewalt 796B hammer drill, paired with a Ridgid 862311 impact driver, as my go to set. It came down to timing more than anything, catching a great deal on something that I needed.

Thank you so much for the comparisons you're doing with the batteries. It's something I've searched for in the past and it just wasn't anywhere (for ridgid anyways), and you've been doing them recently here and I think the results you're getting show why they're important to include when reviewing a tool. Ridgid is pushing that the max output batteries are "MOST POWERFUL RIDGID 18V batteries to date, delivering up to 2X MORE POWER" and I've seen a few other tool review channels on YT talking about the new tools repeating that line without actually putting the claims to the test. I know adding the batteries to a tool review adds a lot of extra work to doing a review, but it makes the review so much more useful and interesting to watch (for me anyways) becuase as you said, I don't want to use a 9ah on my drill. seeing the normal 5ah and the 3ah octane outpace the 4ah max output is very interesting and maybe even something ridgid should clarify, either with you, and thus us, or in their marketing materials.

This test does shows the 5Ah battery without the extra tabs performing better than a 4Ah max output. That does not seem to fit the narrative that the max output batteries are 2X.....

I think the issue comes down to some unclear marketing. Unless there are some new 18650 cells with much higher max/sustained amperage than the 30A Samsung INR18650-20S (probably what the 2.0/4.0 Max Output batteries are using), you’re not going to get 2x the output because the older 2.0/4.0 used the 22A INR18650-20R. That’s a 35% increase in sustained current. Notable, but far short of 2x (100% increase). Still, that should give the Max Output 4.0 the potential of up to 60A, assuming it uses 18650 cells in a 2P configuration. Given that the old 5.0 and Octane 3.0 both outperformed it, in not certain that is a valid assumption. The Octane 3.0 uses 35A Samsung INR21700-30T cells, giving it notably more sustained current than the Max Output 2.0, and close to the 40A/44A output of the old 5.0/4.0. But I don’t know why it would outperform the Max Output 4.0, unless I’ve made faulty assumptions about what cells the Max Output 4.0 is using. Now, the unreleased 6.0/8.0 Max Output batteries are expected to use 21700 cells, which can deliver 35A-45A depending on manufacturer and model, so in a 2P configuration, you’re looking at 70A-90A sustained current, and that certainly meets/exceeds the potential of a claim of 2x as much current vs the first generation 4.0/5.0 batteries. I’m going to speculate here that the Max Output 6.0 will be the same cells used in the Octane 6.0, using 3Ah 21700 cells in a 2P configuration, but losing the Bluetooth and put into a smaller package. The 8.0 will then be the same package, with 4Ah 21700 cells in a 2P configuration. This would mean that the max sustained current on those is going to be around 70A, which puts them somewhat short of 2x. However, it may be that they are waiting on as yet unannounced or not yet in volume production 40A-45A cells that might put them at 80A-90A sustained which gets them very close to that 2x claim.

@@WorkshopAddict I realized that it’s possible you have a bad tool or battery. If those two new contacts aren’t working on either the battery or tool, it might not be able to take advantage of the MaxOutput 4.0 battery. That could explain the poor performance of the 4.0 in this test. Might want to do some tests with the impact driver to see if the results are any different there and/or put a voltmeter on the new contacts on he battery pack. Just a thought.

If you look in the description, you will see the comparison of the octane to this Milwaukee. I had to pick one drill, it only seemed right to choose a drill of the same size. If someone is in the market, the Milwaukee is smaller than even the new Ridgid and has gobs more power. Just had to pick one and no matter what drill I chose, people would always want something else.

We have a video out on that already! Dewalt took the win with the large Flexvolt battery. Dcd998 or dcd999. This Ridid drill is not made anymore, so I would choose between Milwaukee and Dewalt. Milwaukee being a smaller drill but pretty much as powerful.

I ended up going with the new Ridgid high output rated at 1250 kit that has the impact that is just a little more powerful than the generation the drill in this video comes with. I also got the ridgid sub compact to do small jobs and tight spaces. I'm not one to normally buy multiple tools that have 1 purpose let alone that do the same exact things lol, however with the deals through Christmas and new years .. the price was right and it provides 2x2ah batteries, a 4 and 6ah max output battery.. covering all the bases..i got the tool deal.. took back all the extra tools that came in the deals(8ah max output, and i chose the mid impact wrench and the sub came with a Max out 4ah) so i could save that money.. all together i spent any 310$ and sold my kit from 2014 for 80$ with the charger,1.5ahx2 and 1 x4ah battery.. so all in for 2 kits all new i have about 230$ into them..i don't see how i could beat that.

That's not right at all. The max output 4ah only stalled because of the serious serious angle he had the drill on. If he gave it another shot i guarantee it would hsve plowed through. He retried the cp 3.0 three times before it was able to make it through. I keep watching this video and i shake my head every time Milwaukee fans will do anything to discredit a ridgid tool because they feel mikwaukee has to be better because its TTIs baby. Buy TTI does what emerson ssys for ridgid so i mean if Emerson says make a 1400 in lb hammrrdrill, TTI makes it

Im with you Brian, I go for best tool regardless of platform which is why im in 8 platforms. Some are just 1 tool in a platform (ie bosch 18v 3 gallon vac you reccommended a couple yrs ago) Its great to not be subject to a sub par offering from a company if you are in just 1 platform.

I only got into the ridgid line this December because of their octane tools. I was saving to buy next their octane hammer drill & drill driver combo set, and it is now out of stock. Now I have to jump platforms to get a hammer drill that was as powerful as the octane. Kind of wish they would have said something about this current change 90 days ago, I would have went with another line. But I guess if they did that, ridgid would have missed out on those Christmas sales. How could one trust a company like that?!

I basically never use my Octane HDD, would be willing to sell it, can offer the Octane impact driver too if you’re attached to having the set. I have other options for both HDD and impact. HDD is essentially brand new, although purchased ~3 years ago. It’s just much more than I need, mostly wanted the impact driver, Octane batteries, and free tools the kit offered at the time. The impact driver is in great shape, but it was my primary impact for about a year so it’s been used a good bit. Looks lightly used, but I’ve mostly switched to using my M12 FUEL HDD and Surge impact tools.

Ridgid kind of messed up a little here. I like the smaller and lighter new brushless model but to give up 500 in pounds of torque almost 40% is a lot. They did a better job with the impact driver. it's rated at 2300 compared to the octane 2400

I have the 3rd Gen. Ridgid tools and bought up to the 5th Gen line of tools. Seeing where they are going [down], I would stay away from them and spend 10% more for Makita or 25% more for Milwaukee.

Probably not happening anytime soon. 4.0Ah cells apparently don’t perform quite as well as the 3.0Ah cells. Until that gets sorted out, I don’t expect to see a 4.0 HO from Milwaukee. Could be later this year...but I wouldn’t expect it before 2022. Just a guess.

@@geoffstrickler The limited sources I have for Milwaukee's 4.0Ah 21700 cells to date are in the 30-32A range, continous I think, yielding up to about 575W, which is decent, but less than pretty much any other battery other than the compact 1.5 and 2.0. They would actually be better off using a double stack of modern 18650 2Ah cells in parallel, for like 50-60A continous (~900+ W). Now that would be a high output 4Ah, but it would be an XC4.0 HO, not a CP4.0 HO.

@@connors.1077 agreed. But then calling them HO is a bit of a stretch. There are higher amperage 3.0Ah 21700 cells “out” now, although I don’t know how available they are. I presume higher amp 4.0 are in the works, allowing for a compact 1P 4.0 HO. Not much point in a 2P 4.0 when the HO 6.0 is available, and the 5.0XC already fills that need.
