Hi Melinda, if I understand correctly you went to one local/regional second hand store (McKay's of Tennessee and North Carolina) and found they had overpriced records. And then you made a video calling them out. Did you point out to them that their pricing was above market and ask for comment before making the video? Do you know if this is ignorance on their part or a deliberate policy? Is it isolated to one branch of McKay's? Perhaps they could use your help. Your solution is to go to Target or Walmart or a local store, which is a bit unspecific. Plus McKay's are local and of course that's better than supporting a big chain. Isn't the solution actually just to be price aware and to let retailers know if they're not competitive? That might actually help someone else not get stung in the future rather than saying nothing and leaving the problem out there for the next person to face. If we're generalizing wouldn't part of the solution also be to not accept prices from Mofi that are set based on an analogue provenance and which have not been revised to reflect their newly admitted digital origin? It's the prices at the top of the market that give sellers like McKay's the leeway and tacit permission to price higher and hope they get away with it. It seems like you're being selective with your criticism and certainly unfair if you haven't asked McKay's for comment. Thank you and have a great day!
@Mabuhay_Ka Жыл бұрын
She isnt being unfair, what she is talking about is a standard practice of most record stores now. They are taking advantage of newer record collectors ignorance on what records are actually worth. Stores are also just paying the over priced mark up from the labels and distros rather than just saying no and passing the extra cost to consumers. A local chain to me is pretty consistant on charging double for records from Earache records which you can get online and any other store for the expected cost or pretty close to it.
@lokitio Жыл бұрын
@@Mabuhay_Ka Say it to them, let them know why you aren't buying, say you are making a video that will call them out, ask them for comment, and don't apologize for mofi prices without criticism. That's the fair approach, and that's how to constructively handle it.
@richardelliott8352 Жыл бұрын
@@lokitio if they are unaware of competitive pricing , they don't know how to run a business . It's hardly the customers job to help them manage the store. While it is not constructive to a record buyers goals to shop as though on a secret mission, if you point out what you consider as an untenable price, it's either considered one person's opinion against their professional judgment, something they already know, or, if they didn't know it, they are probably too dumb to recognize good advice anyway. As for the crack about mobile fidelity, it sounds a bit contrarian, just thrown in seeking justification of your views and internet victory. They sell and price records on absolute sound quality, not on the accuracy of the hype material inside. A business is not going to lower successful pricing because some people got their feelings hurt because they couldn't hear a digital step in the manufacturing chain that was used to improve product, and want to elevate reading literature about the primary product, the record, over listening.
@lokitio Жыл бұрын
@@richardelliott8352 if you're going to publish it in an expose on youtube, its good manners to offer the right to comment. And if you're so concerned about the next person coming along, you owe it to them to at least mention it. You're not right about Mobile Fidelity, their pricing premium was predicated on an anologue provenance. That was an immutable and intrinsic part of their value proposition. If they're given carte blanche to retain this pricing for a digital product, it's no wonder other record producers and retailers feel empowered to set artificially high prices. If we don't push back, we deserve what Melinda got.

@@MelindaMurphy I have a store with similar prices that is located in a giant well known mall that is probably one of a handful in the entire country that is still thriving, (KOP mall). I can't imagine what their rent is but like you I laugh at the ridiculous prices. They have a reissued, remastered copy of Lou Reed Rock n Roll Animal for $48 that has been collecting dust for a while now. Nostalgia and the baby boomers having more disposable income are a big factor I'm thinking. Also I think you have younger generations that grew up with CDs and mp3s that are into vinyl but have no reference to what they used to sell for in the past. One final point is most new records by current bands are usually in the $20-$30 range.

I may be wrong but typically the thing that makes a specific vinyl expensive is release date, issue, availability, and condition. Limited run collections, first pressings. Things like this cause certain vinyls to be worth hundreds even thousands. And for good reason. It's sort of how pokemon cards and guitars can sell for sick money. Collectors looking for vintage stuff. It's an investment too because you sure can make money ahead in time

Hey Melinda spot on. I've been saying for a while how stupid expensive new vinyl prices have become. It only seems that those 2012 Beatles LP's have gone up further than when first released. For example I paid $500 AUD for my EU Beatles Remasters stereo LP box in January 2013. Averaging out 14 LP's works to be around $35.70 AUD each (2 of these are double LP's too). With exchange rate that would've been around $20-25 USD. Remember also that there were major quality issues with the US Rainbo pressings at that time. Yes these are sourced digitally per the equivalent 2009 remaster CD's so also they're not as highly regarded. However to my ears they sound great and the hardcover book is fantastic (different to the Mono Box). Here in Australia they sell for around $59.95 individually. Now I know I've been guilty of spending big on the recent Beatles boxed sets but that is ridiculous for ostensibly SINGLE LP's. However it seems all new release vinyl is priced that way. Why would I spend that much on a single LP when the CD equivalent is $20+ cheaper. The last 'new' non-Beatles vinyl I bought was around a year or so back with a bunch of sealed Roy Orbison MGM label reissues that were on sale, as well as a Stooges LP. Otherwise I avoid them. It's not just the chain stores like JB HI-FI here in Oz that are guilty either. You'll see the same in independent stores too. Vinyl collecting is a trendy thing. However it's annoying to see for long term collectors such as myself and many others and for those that are relatively new to the hobby. Being in the US you seem a bit more fortunate in the pricing area but then those those Walmart prices say otherwise. Either the record companies &/or the stores are gouging on pricing and that's going to have a long term effect on the LP medium. In their heyday, LP's were affordable, but for the convenience of the CD to all but wipe it out. Ironically vinyl has made a comeback at a bigger price point than the CD. But for how long? Enough from me. Hope you're well, safe and happy. Love your work sweetheart as always. Cheers. 😘❤️

Nicely done on this video Melinda! You gave ALL the required information in your preamble. There is no way anyone can have any question of your position. If they do something is wrong with them. The fact is that it doesn't cost anymore today to make a record as it did 4 years ago. Any increase in price on new records is pure greed, nothing else. As far as those prices from that shop goes, that is the latest trend. Record shops everywhere are going crazy with the prices for used records without any evidence of reason to back it up! Record shops will always charge a bit more than in the wild due to overhead, which is completely understood. However, what is being seen now of late is way far beyond that and into the realm of criminal activity. To price a $5 record at $50 should be illegal, but it is not. Part of the problem as you pointed out is that there are too many people not using their heads correctly and willing to pay those prices, which just feeds the problem. Unfortunately, that won't change. I picked up a used copy of Led Zep Physical Graffiti for $10 and it is in good shape and intact. As for remasters of Zep LPs, I have heard two or three different ones and personally find them annoying. They are either tilted up too much or the mix is all wrong. The OPs and subsequent reissues from the 70s are sonically superior in my opinion in this case. (This is not true for every case).
@MelindaMurphy Жыл бұрын
You got a great deal on that Led Zeppelin record. Thank you for the kind words. 😃♥️ Take care.
@slidetek Жыл бұрын
If you could have a blanket rule, it's that the OG LP will probably be sonically superior to any reissue. Tape degradation or even original master availability being just one possible issue. Yes, i've gotten a few newer versions that are stunning, but that's usually the exception. About the only thing that might be an improvement is quieter vinyl.
@ericelliott227 Жыл бұрын
@@slidetek Well, there is no such thing as quieter vinyl. The pellet mix is what it is and it doesn't matter where the pellets are sourced from. All PVC pellet manufactures do use some "recycled material", but it is not generations old or used for other things, it is generally only pellets that slipped through the complete cook and are certified clean. Pellet quality is the same from anywhere unless one knows that the manufacture is knowingly using dirty formulation. This is very rare though. It is like the myth about them melting down Bic pens in the 70s to make records from them. That actually never happened. Record pressing plants are very dirty environments and that is the start, so that is why even new records must be properly cleaned, whether or not one believes there is some external stamper mold release agent or not. The second the record comes off the press it is contaminated as it sits waiting for packaging. To get quieter vinyl requires one to clean their records properly, new or used. No, you do not have to do that every time you want to play a record. After a certain point you only need to dust the record with an anti-static brush or what have you. I'm only talking about initial cleaning. Quietness can also depend on one's phono cart set up and one's phono preamp, but none of these things work independently. Vinyl records are an "it is what it is" type thing and one either accepts it or does not. As for OG LPs sounding superior to newer versions: Sometimes that is true and sometime not, it depends. For example, in my opinion the OG Led Zep LPs sound sonically superior to the newer versions. Again, it is all opinion. For the record I have not heard many newer versions of LPs. Much of the music I listen too has not been reissued. While the OG pressings I have are nice, I am curious though about hearing a Chicago reissue, but they are hard to find and I am not paying $50+ for ANY record.

This video is so spot on about the prices vs age/reissue justification. The prices you showed are what I call BSC prices..crazy crazy for sure. But on those particular copies if a serious collector bought them they overpaid for sure. What really irks me to no end is the friggin price stickers on the jackets themselves...or labels. Getting it off without damaging it is one thing...but most leave their mark as they also pull off the sheen which on black and white look horrible. i have both the mono Revolver...killer piece as well as Thriller. My local one off stores have fair prices but i have seen a regional chain put the craziest prices on common records with beat up jackets...grrr.. Thanks for the great video Melinda;-) Here's hoping the prices will start coming down soon.

@richardblayneamerican8149 Жыл бұрын
"Yikes" is right, Melinda. I mentioned in a earlier post that '180 Gram Vinyl' stickers are often used to boost the prices on albums like the 'Thriller' you showed. Vinyl weight has nothing to do with sound quality! Also, you really have to know your stuff when paying big bucks for 'rare' albums! Condition-wise, I've had the best luck on Ebay, though I've paid a premium for some albums. I can always 'price and compare' on Ebay. In any case, I don't think prices will come down until the vinyl craze dies, whenever that happens (kinda hope it doesn't)! Take care.

Holy crap! That is just outrageous. I got into this much later and I was bemoaning the fact that I had missed the boat when vinyl was still more of a smaller cult following. At least I still came in when prices were cheaper and basic titles were in the bins. Thriller for $57?!

I bought my first record at 16 and now I’m 61 I have about 1800 albums in my collection and approximately three or four are the new 180 g records. Depending what city I’m in I’ve seen some records with $80 price tags it should say $25. I compare every record that I look at the Discogs, popsike and other platforms to ensure what I’m willing and should pay. I’m pretty sure it’s the uneducated bandwagon sellers that are pricing these records. Great video keep on trucking.

Dear Ms. M: The vinyl consumer is soon going to tire of this over-priced gig, and the prices are going to come down, but not before they first get totally comical. The stock brokerages used to charge ten dollars a trade till Robin hood trading started its zero-commission program, and soon all the big brokerages decided it was a really good idea to drop the commissions altogether. Tower Records will probably take the lead, and in five years from now, you will be able to buy vinyls at $7.00 a pop…like it used to be in the good old days of the 70’s…That is my take on this, and you can take that to the bank. I truly enjoy your videos...Keep up the good work!

I absolutely agree with you about crazy prices. I've stopped buying new albums years ago. I only know of two thrift stores that sometimes have a mix of used old and recent albums. The prices are very low but unfortunately it's a one hour drive and some collectors now know about them. A recent report about vinyl record sales surpassing CDs. The report found that about fifty percent of buyers don't own a turntable. This means that they are flippers. Thanks for sharing and I love your family shopping routine.
@MelindaMurphy Жыл бұрын
You're probably right about the flippers. I also believe that young people are buying Taylor Swift and other artists records as collectibles or with the hope of having a turntable someday. The prices are pretty crazy right now. Thank you and take care.
@andrewhaines3259 Жыл бұрын
That report is misguiding the public. It's not true that vinyl has overtaken CD sales, not by quantity, but by unit cost. Think about it. In very basic terms, you sell 10 CDs at £1 each, that's £10 and 5 records at £5 each, total £25 & hey presto, you've sold more vinyl than CDs! There are better and more detailed examples on KZbin about this.

Hi Melinda, I share your amazement at the prices retailers are charging for vinyl old & battered or new. Why anyone would even pay $30 for a modern reissue when an original in great condition can be found on Discogs or eBay for a third of the price baffles me. I was in a prominent store yesterday and saw really ragged, second and third-tier items for 40 and 50 dollars that shouldn't have been priced more than a buck apiece. With about 20,000 LPs myself, these prices make me fantasize about immediate retirement! I noticed that all the price stickers on the albums you showed here had McKay price stickers. I shop at the McKays in Nashville, Knoxville, Winston Salem and Virginia (a rogue family store). Which one do you frequent? Nice job here!

Fun video! Yeah, there's a shop here in San Diego that has a cool semi-cottage behind it where there are usually tons of great used records for $3 or $5. I've pulled so many great records from there, and I love the shop because of it. On the other hand, looking at their "new" stuff often actually makes me mad! Some of the prices are off the charts crazy. Meanwhile, even worse is when I look through their "New Used Arrivals", and see $25-$40 records in maybe VG at best. It's just kind of sad. I’ve noticed some higher prices lately as well, and I think it comes down to a couple things 1) Whoever is pricing the records has no real idea of the actual going price, but they see the artist or album and just slap a price on it. 2) Because the records are the big thing these days they can put those prices on them and like you said someone poor unsuspecting soul will pay it. It’s sad and it kind of ruins it for everyone. But as long as people will pay those prices, they will keep asking those prices.

I don't like to pay more than a couple bucks for an old record, and I've found some good ones on rare occasion. But more and more prices for even obscure old rock and roll records are leaping up into the $15-20 range, even at thrift shops. On the other hand, probably my greatest find, about a year ago, was Elvis Presley's first hit record (Mystery Train and whatever is on the other side) for the equivalent of 17 cents. You have your 2014 Mono Version of Revolver and you can get that online for £125 and the mono boxset which I bought for around £350 at the time of release and just under £2000. Queen Greatest Hits, well you have the originally released USA/Canada version by Elektra which has Under Pressure on it. Now that would be rare for a few reasons. One Queen signed a new deal in 1983 for their records to be globally released by EMI-Capitol, and from 1991 in the US by Hollywood Records. Like many British Bands who insist on the UK Albums being canon, Queen have made the UK Version of Greatest Hits (1974 to 1980) as the canon version globally since the early 2000s, and now part of the Platinum Collection.

In my country Argentina, now you can get the Led Zeppelin II album in a new vinyl edition for 13 dollars. Also Queen's double album, Greatest Hits, new vinyl edition for 36 dollars. For the same price, Physical Graffiti, Led Zeppelin's double album.
