As impractical as zeppelins might sound for war, they had one major advantage: altitude. A zeppelin could ascend in only a few minutes to a height that would take a biplane an hour to reach, and zeppelins were often just too high up to be hit. That definitely didn’t do any favors for their accuracy, but it’s still a pretty big advantage to have a weapon that the enemy simply can’t reach

Not all that much really. So long as the refrigeration plants were running, the thermite would have begun burrowing through the vessel only for newly formed ice to reseal the hull above it. Basically the pykrete was regenerative armour. I dare say that had enough German bombers arrived to pummel it with incendiaries they could have caused appalling damage, but how those bombers would get themselves out to the mid Atlantic where the ship was destined to spend its life, or how they would have overcome the hundreds of fighters it carried onboard is anyone's guess! Habakkuk as a project was the product of desperation during the darkest days of the U-boat menace. As the tide of the war in the Atlantic turned, Habakkuk went from being the last hope for control of the ocean to being completely pointless.

@@CountScarlioni that the termite would just melt through is not correct. Ice that is hit by thermite tends to explode. the expansion of the heated ice around the termite would cause a lot of stress and might rip the whole thing apart. turning the refrigeration up to control melting would cause the rest of the thing to contract, which would increase the stress. of course hitting it with a bomb in the first place is really hard to achieve. maybe hitting it with V1 or Mistel from the distance might do the trick.

@@ulrichkalber9039 IF you could get a concentrated amount of thermite in one area, then yes I agree, the damage from steam explosions alone would be considerable in that section. A barrage of those could well kill the carrier. As I understand it though WWII incendiary munitions were highly dispersed as their intent was to start fires over a wide area. With the Habakkuk being a relatively small target compared to a city, and having a steel deck plate to burn through even before reaching ice, I don't think those small clumps of thermite raining down would be enough to make a lot of small, rapidly refrozen puddles. Delivery of a concentrated amount of thermite would require special munitions. But the Habakkuk's intended station was the middle of the Atlantic where it could provide anti-sub air cover in the gap between UK and US air defences. It was never intended to go anywhere near the European coastline. Because of that, V1s are not the delivery system. They had a range of about 200km so had no chance of reaching out over 1500km into the Atlantic. They also had an appalling accuracy. Literally whatever you aimed them at, they would only hit a target within 8-9km of that location. They're also vulnerable to interception by those hundreds of fighters on board. So even if one could somehow get in range, it's chances of hitting the carrier would be negligible. V2s were somewhat better at targetting and can't be intercepted, but they still only had about a 300km range. If the Habakkuk existed, and the Nazis had enough sea power left to deal with it, then I'm sure they would have devised some method of destructive attack. But up against something with a dozen aircraft carriers worth of planes defending it would have been a tall order. Anti-ship missiles would have made short work of Habakkuk, but examples powerful and long ranged enough wouldn't be invented for a decade or more.

Japanese Codes Orange and Purple were broken long before December 7th 1941. In fact Isoroku Yamamato sent a message back to Japan on Dec. 6th reporting the attack would commence. A radio office on Oahu intercepted the message and telegraphed it to Washington D.C. eager to join the war. The American government allowed this to happen to create a false flag attack as it has in ever major global conflict to defer public opinion to go to war to make MONEY!!

On the Ratte. It only existed as a few different blueprints. And those few blueprints had slightly different designs (but mostly the same). From what we can tell, it looks like it wasn't a project that was taken too seriously. Or never got past the blueprint stage. It may have been deemed impractical or even impossible with Germany's lack of resources. There is also a possibility that it was an idea conceived over a drunken weekend by a few engineers. Any one who knows engineers knows they like to draw up weird things for fun.

The Rattle’s major flaw is the sheer amount of fuel you’d need to burn to move it at all. Germany was always very low on fuel throughout the war, adding this behemoth to their army would basically be making a hyper explosive artillery piece that would bankrupt Berlin in a month.

Fun fact: The battleship gneisenau has its turrets removed with one of them part of the Atlantic wall in Norway and the other two for the ratte (the other two were scrapped) allowing gneisenau to receive the 380mm gun upgrade

Bombing raid were innacurate by design since their goal is to destroy vast swaths of terrain but close air support was the opposite it's meant for close and precise bombing of strategic target such as tank, gun positions and bunkers the stuka and spitfire were famous example of planes capable of close air support and their accuracy was good enough to make any tank operating without air superiority an easy target. This is why their were no tanks at Normandy the division sent there got pinned down by a mix of resistance activity and ally air forces. The ratte would have made incredible target practice for an ally air wing it's big profile and armor thickness very reminiscent of a battleship, famous for constantly being sunk by bombing runs. *Despite* having AA guns

@@zebaguettefromfrance1287 i would argue against the two examples of close air support planes, seeing as while both were used in thoes capacities, they had different roles, the spitfire as o fighter and the stuka was primarily a bomber used in similar capacities to JU 88s and he 111s with bridge hunting roles thanks to its high percision, except G and D variations which were respectively srmed with the bk 3.7cm or the mg151 or mg 17 gun pods. Planes like the 109, 129, 190, for the krauts. Typhoon, Hurricane and probably the tempest for the brits, and the 47 and 38 for the yanks. Though with some of the vehicles in the vid here, some heavy bombers could have been used to take them out, specifically, the Avro lancasters with the tall boy bombs or whatever theit named. Not dissing on your overall argument though, im just being a nerd.

@@damine2264 Using Tall Boys on a Ratte would only be effective with an extremely accurate hit, not to mention the tall boy was essentially designed to create small earthquakes to destroy buildings, whereas a small flight of any heavy fighter bomber equipped with rockets and bombs would be able to supress the Air defenses of the Ratte and at the very least disable it since its such massive target. And by then it'd be a sitting duck for infantry and artillery if it couldn't be repaired quickly, and given the size of the vehicle would almost certainly be out of the question. Even if it could shrug off attacks or somehow perfectly protect itself from air attacks, it's still a huge unit dumped onto a single part of a frontline, and thus could be easily avoided by use of either speed or natural terrain like hills. Not to mention the logistical strain it'd even put on the Germans to field one meaning other nearby units would suffer since all their resources would be poured into a single massive sitting duck that couldn't manuever, cross rivers, or cross terrain features and whose ability to defend itself from faster units or aircraft was questionable at best. Doesn't matter how accurate the bombs are when your target's essentially a massive building you're bombing at low altitude

Another Overpowered weapon often overlooked by Historians is the Design A-150 or "Super Yamato." There were six planned Yamato Class Battleships in three sub-variants designed and planned. Four more hulls were slated to be part of this in 1934 at the time of the designing of Yamato, however these hulls were repurposed for the A-150 Project by the time Yamato was being finalized. The Yamato Designs were also planned to be upgraded over time based on a concept authored by Rear Admiral Kikuo Fujimoto in 1934. The first upgrade of this series were slated for the two ships of the Shinano Group (Including Warship Hull No 111). It was designed to incorporate lessons learned from Yamato and Musashi in time to be utilized on Shinano and Warship No. 111 (The third and fourth Yamato class hull). The design called for a triple bottom, as opposed to a double bottom on the Yamato, the Main Belt’s thickness was reduced by 10mm to 400mm, the Main deck’s flat portion by 10mm to 190mm and the main turret faces by 20mm to 540mm. Extra protection was proposed for the 155 mm (6.1 in) turrets in the form of 25mm added all round (~1 inch). The flag bridge and other flagship facilities would be extended along with an extended conning tower in the front, to improve functionality as fleet flagships. Fuel storage would be sacrificed a touch, due to over estimating how many fuel spaces were needed, to improve weight. Finally, the twelve 127 mm (5.0 in) guns of the 1945 configuration of Yamato would be replaced by 100 mm (3.9 in) 60 Caliber guns in dual turrets on a 1 to 1 basis. It is also speculated that these edits would also be made to Yamato and Musashi as a later refit. In addition later edits, on influence from Yamato's 1945 refit and also Warship 797 and 798, indicate the 155mm (6.1 in) guns on the port and starboard sides of the ship in wing turrets would also be removed. Rear Admiral Kikuo Fujimoto, in his 1934 plan for the Yamato class (which was still being followed in terms of construction) calculated that by 1942, the US Navy would surely know about the 18 inch main battery of the Yamato-class and would start building their own 18 inch armed battleships. To counter this, Fujimoto proposed that the existing Yamato Class, the 4th Program subclass (Shinano and Warship No. 111) and the new 5th Programme subclass (Warship No. 797 and 798) have their main battery increased to 510 mm (20.1 in) guns; which were tested and ready to begin production by late 1944/1945. After the design process finished with an Improved A-140F6 variant design slated for Shinano and Warship No. 111 (see: Yamato Class) of the 4th Programme, there was a new design effort in 1938/1939 to have a new heavier Yamato-class variant that mounted 8-9 of the 510 mm (20.1 in) guns and be protected from the same weapon at a range of 20-30km. The Japanese Elite Admirals of high standing in the Navy preferred the twin gun turret designs due to its larger space for both guns (decreasing reload times), smaller turrets for a slimmer profile and also reports of higher accuracy from dual gun turrets. Also, the 510mm (20.1 in) inch gun had already been developed and produced in 1935 for trials involving both the 460mm (18.1 in) guns mounted to Yamato and the future 510mm (20.1 in) Naval Guns. This design (A-150) was originally part of the 6th Programme that the late designer Fujimoto conceived in 1934 and the other designers followed in the Yamato Project (A-140) of the mid 1930s (even following his death), however it became its own project during its development until focus shifted to further improving the Yamato Class.

The Elite Admirals of high standing in the Navy pushed for a 30 knot top speed initially; however it was feared that due to the main gun size and sheer weight of the turrets, it would increase displacement up to 100,000 tons. A lot of mounting options were considered including triple mount turrets of 510 mm (20.1 in) or even quadruple mounts. Although quadruple mounts were impressive on paper, it proved to be too much as the increase in displacement (way beyond the bounds of 100,000 tons) and decrease in speed (less than 27 knots) made it much more impractical. In the end, before the end of World War II, two designs were considered, a variant with four dual mount 510 mm (20.1 in) guns and a speed of 27 knots at 85,000 tons and a final sub-variant of the previous that could cruise along at 30 knots at 100,000 tons. Secondary Armament on the ships varied as to whether or not they would retain the 2 triple 155mm (6.1 in) guns of the Improved A-140F6 design slated for Shinano and Warship No. 111. No definitive answer was reached, however, before the project shifted in goal. Although general characteristics were vague on how many 100 mm (3.9 in) 60 Caliber guns were mounted, many artist drawings, in reference to plans of Shinano and Warship 111 (Improved A-140F6), called for 12-16 dual mount 100 mm (3.9 in) 60 Caliber guns with 6-8 per side between the main tower and secondary tower. It was also possible that they would mount many dual mount 25 mm (1.0 in) AA cannons (at least 36 dual mounts that were present on the Improved A-140F6 design for Shinano). Although exact armor values of the belt were not certain, the Turret Faces were to be 800 mm (31.5 in) thick while their roofs 295 mm (11.6 in) thick. Although no powerplant is known for certain, it is probably safe to assume the A-150 Variants would be powered by Steam Turbines like Yamato and her sisters. Although hybrid Turbine/Diesel or full diesel arrangements were explored in the A-140 Yamato Project, it was discovered that the Marine Diesel Engines produced domestically were less powerful and less reliable than initially thought. This spurred the push to have the Yamato be powered fully by a Steam Turbine Powerplant which would have most likely not changed by the time of the A-150 design's construction. Although the 5th Programme and the previous 4th Programme (improved variant for Shinano and Warship No. 111) did keep the remaining 2 triple 155 mm (6.1 in) guns, commonly available on Japanese light cruisers, whether they would have ended up being mounted to the A-150 designs of the 6th Programme is in heavy speculation. The reason why the Japanese might have wanted to omit them from the design was that the guns were poorly armored and only capable of protecting the crew from shell splinters due to being 25mm or around 1 inch thick all around. In fact, the Improved A-140F6 variant design, intended for Shinano and Warship No. 111 during their initial construction, called for an extra 25mm to be added to increase the protection to around 2 inches or 50mm as these turrets were plucked directly off of former Japanese Light Cruisers that were rearmed as Heavy Cruisers. Some artist interpretations have the 25mm AA turrets from Yamato in dual mounts represented (at least 36 of those turrets as intended for the Shinano Subvariant Design); while others have them removed completely. In reality, many nations, including Japan studied and found out that the 20mm variants of anti-aircraft weapons were too short range and generally insufficient to shoot down aircraft as the war progressed. As such, many nations explored adding more weapons closer to 40mm that could blow most planes out of the sky in only a few hits. In fact the 25mm AA guns fielded by the Japanese were actually quite terrible weapons due to their limited capacity magazines that had to be changed on a per-gun basis, low rate of fire per gun and were considered (even by the elite admirals of the diet) obsolete by mid-war at the latest (some even considered them obsolete by the beginning of the Second World War). Due to ease of production and abundance of ammunition these guns continued to be mounted; even after they were considered obsolete. It was proposed that 4 ships would be built in this class, however in the meantime, during World War II; multiple things happened that closed the door on this design project forever. Not only would the fourth hull of the Yamato class be broken up and reused for other construction projects as well as Shinano (the third ship of the Yamato class) was converted into an Aircraft Carrier, but also the 4 ships of this class were never ordered. The sobering truth was that the Yamato class as built and in her 1945 configuration after her refit were pushing the limits of Japanese Industry and drydock capacity as the Super Yamato designs would need a new slipway even larger and longer than Yamato and her sisters. In fact, the sheer size of the A-150 design would be impossible to construct very quickly with the quality of steel the Japanese had that would be required for a ship of the A-150’s size and weight. It was also rumored that armor plates would have to be attached in layers in order to achieve the desired thickness on some surfaces. There were many concerns about the cost of these massive ships and also fears that the Imperial Diet would reject such overly large and expensive designs. With this in mind, the Design Department and Elite Admirals in charge of the project refocused their efforts on improving the existing A-140F6 design (Yamato) beyond what was already slated for the variant intended for Shinano and Warship No. 111 of the 4th Programme, keeping to the existing dimensions of Yamato, Musashi and Shinano instead of bigger designs and just replacing the 9 460mm (18.1 in) guns in triple turrets with 6 510mm (20.1 in) guns in dual mount turrets. In a way the A-150 plan was, in its final form, an Improved Design of Shinano slated for the 5th Programme to be built in 1942 with 6 510 mm (20.1 in) guns in dual mounts and 12 dual turrets of 100 mm (3.9 in) guns; retaining the triple 155 mm (6.1 in) guns forward and aft of the superstructure. The loss of Yamato and Musashi, along with the Elite Admirals' switching of priorities to Aircraft Carrier Production (as evidenced by Shinano's Conversion into an Aircraft Carrier) instead of Battleship Construction halted all progress on any further Yamato Class Battleships and their future variants including the A-150 Project. Warships 797 and 798 were originally designed to remove the wing turrets of the original A-140F6 of the 3rd Program (Yamato) and the Shinano variant of the 4th Program in exchange for additional 100 mm (3.9 in) 60 Caliber dual gun batteries, but during this project they had a new lease on life as a further improved variant of Shinano with the 20.1 inch guns under influence from the A-150 Project. This Improved Yamato was borne from the A-150 Project, but would be incorrectly referred to as the Super Yamato or otherwise the Main Design proposed for Project A-150.

I've tried to edit both the Yamato and Super Yamato Wiki pages with more detail regarding their designs and the processes in October of this year, however the users there reverted my changes I spent a month researching on because there wasn't enough specific sourcing (i.e. they wanted page number, line number and word index) in Chicago Manual of Style (which I had up to the chapter name) and basically, when I protested, told me to take a hike and IP banned me from making any further edits. They also didn't like that I called the elite admirals that were in high standing of the navy and also heads of the project "Admiralty" because the Japanese had no concept of Admiralty. I agree there was no concept, but like it or not, the group of elite admirals in high standing would be considered an Admiralty from the standards of the British which the Imperial Japanese Navy was based off of to a degree. The Japanese used a lot of western influences in their politics and their military, but the concepts they used were from the Imperialist Era. They had Imperialist Ideals way later than other nations and by that time the other countries had grown out of Imperialism. This obviously lead to conflict and war. The Japanese were just behind the times and fought an aggressive war due to the pro-war politicians and warmongers in the military factions that always wanted to bureaucratically have the Emperor's ear. Emperor Showa hated the Chinese and Koreans as they had been blood enemies for centuries so he allowed the war (even though he had no official vote at the time) to take revenge on a centuries old blood feud between them, the Chinese and the Koreans. When the US intervened, by oil embargoing them, it was an act of aggression to the Japanese, but from America's perspective, they were wary of another war and wanted to prevent Japan from waging war by preventing trade of oil to their shores (a key resource in war). This was a ticking timebomb to war which resulted in Pearl Harbor. The highly corrupted Bushido code being taught to the Imperial Soldier meant that to them, the Geneva convention meant nothing and that surrender brought shame so great that the POW in Japanese captivity should take his own life or be assisted by a Japanese soldier. Those who refused were treated brutally as if they had no human rights (were a lower life form), but not nearly as brutally as the Chinese and Koreans (the so-called rape of Nanjing was the worst massacre and war crime that the Japanese army had done during the war). The stubbornness of the Japanese when the war turned against them was impressive, but from the case of the Japanese it was a life or death struggle for them and they wanted to prevent any non Japanese from touching the Emperor's soil at all costs. The Atomic Bombs had to be dropped on both Hiroshima and Nagasaki; not only to end the fighting early, but to also appeal to the emperor's humanity that his subjects are being killed, not just his own soldiers in suicide attacks within special attack groups (known as kamikaze by the allies), but his civilians as well. This lead to the imperial re script which commanded Japanese forces to lay down their arms and surrender. Although Showa wasn't clean by any means during the war, he was influenced by the factions in the government more than he actively participated which lead him to be absolved; at least in part of any war crimes he was responsible for. It was decided that he would become a figurehead under American direction to keep the Japanese from revolting against the military occupation of Japan. The Emperor renounced his divine status and the original Meiji constitution was changed, further defining the role of the emperor to that of a figurehead and brought more modern Western values and rights to Japan.

The super-Yamatos would honestly be a downgrade on the Yamatos. 9 18” guns were already more than enough to penetrate any amount of belt or deck armour ever put on a ship; 6 20” guns reduce the chances of hitting significantly (because fewer guns) while not really providing a meaningful firepower advantage (the bigger shell size is cancelled out by the fact there are only 6 shells per salvo).

@@jamesricker3997 the only change considered for the Montana's was an early concept by which 18-in guns in four or three dual turrets would be installed. The 18-in 45 caliber was in fact produced and ready for the Montana class; however the Navy department decided that 12/16-in guns would be more beneficial and the fact that the Montana would Cruise along at a much faster speed than the Yamato and have a much heavier (due to American super heavy Armor piercing round) and more accurate broadside made the decision quote clear. The variant with 18-in guns only had a 27 knot top speed. It was pretty set in stone, especially by the end of its development, that the secondary armament would be 5 in 60 caliber guns combined with a lot of 40 mm and 20 mm anti-aircraft guns. In truth the aircraft carrier had superseded the battleship and thus the Navy decided to focus their efforts on the Essex class and the work on the Montana was abandoned. Whatever design you were referring to is highly fictitious and belongs to the likes of wargaming for their world of warships games.

A bit too late and based on old doctrine, more like. By the time Yamato was deployed, with the loss of the Kido Butai at Midway, no amount of strategy would have been able to employ her effectively. Regaining air superiority was impossible, as there was neither time nor industrial capacity to replace the lost carriers, much less at the rate the Americans were churning out the Essex-class. An important thing to note about carriers is they serve multiple roles in naval combat. Aviation is rapid and can fly around and thus allow you to see over the curvature of the earth. Not only could aircraft conduct attacks at longer ranges, carriers could scout their own targets without assistance, thus allowing their escorts to provide defense for them instead of scouting.

The problem with superweapons is that it's an easy way to control the enemy's targeting priorities, because your land-battleship will have every bomb and artillery shell aimed at it. Nukes are the exception, but only because of the potential tiny size and huge numbers

Of all the criticisms of the Ratte the argument that the vehicle travelling at 25 miles per hour was far too slow is totally erroneous. It is 1131 miles from Berlin to Moscow. Travelling at 20 miles per hour for only ten hours per day would have theoretically allowed the Ratte supertank to reach Moscow in less than 6 days.

The ratte would’ve needed a convoy of anti-air vehicles or a screen of fighter planes circling overhead, similar to how vultures lurk a corpse. IF there was a way to take away the threat of bombardments and a way to actually get the thing moving on a battle field I don’t think there was much allied technology could do to stop it other than flank and take out the crew (HALO 2 scarab anyone?) Even then it’s ability to draw key assets on the battle field would’ve made it a key asset itself. I can only imagine the amount of bait/switch strategies and the ensuing cat/mouse games. Edit: needless to mention the demoralizing effects it would have on opposing ground troops and the pressure it would put on opposing commanders and strategists into over-committing counters for it (at least at first.) Absolutely nobody would expect the firepower of naval cannons nor a mobile headquarters deep inland

You would have to construct roads for this tank to move at all. It's 100% impractical. If it had nuclear power maybe? But not capable for germans at the time. Wouldn't be able to move on inclines. The main gun wouldn't be able to depreciate fire, yes as mentioned artillery, air power, flanking attacks would all effected. The hydraulic systems alone that would need constant care. You would need an engineer Battalion on board. Let alone gun crews.

The line would force the Germans to attack through Belgium and then the French would move their army into Belgium and fight them there. The French did not want to see the widespread destruction that WW1 brought on their own territory again. The Maginot Line was quite successful in terms of its intended purpose.

About the maginot line, the French did actually prepare for the Germans to invade Belgium. What they didn't prepare for was Belgium turning neutral and kicking out french garrisons before the war. They also didn't prepare for an invasion through the Arden forests, as that hilly landscape was deemed "impassible".

Ratte is an attempt to realize the dream of a land battleship in the drawings without taking into account new weapon systems. I'm not saying that this tank was impossible to disguise and it would be the number one target for aircrafts, but by the end of the war, anti tank missiles appeared, and the creation of dozens of Ratte led to development in a month hybrid of Isu-152 and B-1-P 180 mm gun, maybe with a sawn-off barrel, but it would pierce at least 360 mm from 2 km with an APDS or APFSDS; it would be relatively compact and much cheaper than Ratte.

M4 Sherman was pitifully undergunned which made it literally near on impossible for Shermans to kill a tiger, and their armour was no good because whilst it had good effective thickness on the front of the hull, the sides of the hull were poorly armoured and it was a pretty unmanouverable tank. It has been well documented that 1 tiger tank could withstand 10 M4 Shermans simply for the fact that Shermans literally couldn’t penetrate the tiger, meanwhile the tiger would kill the Sherman within a few direct hits.

@@zwarrior4593 Yes. As much as I would love to visit Yamato today, Japan would not have been allowed to keep Yamato if she survived the war. If she got into British hands, 72,808 tons of metal would be going into the scrapyards to help broke Britian. They scrapped most of their own battleships, and would not spare an axis ship. At least she could have made enough money to save HMS Warspite. In American hands, she would be used for testing with her guns and armor, specifically against Iowa class battleships. After that, she would either be kept as a warprize or sunk as a target ship.

the Yamato fired her guns more than during the battle with the escort carriers, she also fired them using "beehive" shells when the US attacked and sunk her, and her mission was not fully decoded and confirmed by just codebreakers, 2 us submarines spotted her and confirmed it, then the US sent a task force to sink her.

I love how people explain stuff and how it was built, but they don't understand that welders always have had hoods to cover their face. So many people think googles for hot work are what people used to weld with. If you tried that your face would literally be baked from the UV radiation. 🤣

exactly they couldve cut the size in half and it probly would have been just as effective with its equally enormous primary guns and its secondary guns which would have basically been as large and effective as a notmal sized tanks primary gun🤦🏽‍♂️
